As immigration rates within the United States increase, the prevalence of speech varying from Standard American English (SAE) continues to grow as well; sub sequentially, many immigrants experience social, personal, and professional obstacles attached to their nonnative speech that can result in feelings of cultural isolation. Accent modification has quickly become a solution for individuals wanting to assimilate themselves into a new culture by adopting the phonemic and pragmatic structures of the regional language, essentially reducing personal discomfort connected with speech; however, those who strongly correlate their accent to their identity may regard the therapy as an unnecessary means of conformity to further strengthen western globalization. This phenomenological study aims at examining the relationship between accent and identity among students from the Center for International Education (CIE) at the University of Northern Colorado as well as immigrants/refugees and from the Immigrant and Refugee Center of Northern Colorado (IRCNOCO) with the purpose of exploring how thoughts and feelings toward accent modification differ between participant groups in regards to their experiences and environment. In addition to uncovering potential themes about immigrant and international identity, results show that feelings towards the phenomenon of accent modification differ between participant groups. In conjunction with additional research, information from this study will help to benefit various professions, the general public, and immigrant populations considering accent modification therapy

Appelatives having an insulting function have been used since the earliest times. Nowadays, they are present in standard language and in substandard types of language (sociolects). The aim of the article is to show that animal-related invectives are more and more frequently usedin order to express negative emotions towards the receiver. In Polish and Ukrainian, the number of animal-related invectives increases but also semantics of the words broaden as the meaning of those words originally referred to the name of a given animal. The lexemes were analyzed and divided into two groups: names of animals that have several meanings, but some of them overlap (pl. baran – ukr. бapaн, pl. cap – ukr. цaп, pl. krowa – ukr. кopoвa) and names that  have completely different meanings in the two languages (pl. wydra – ukr. видpa, pl. larwa – ukr. ляpвa, pl. szakal – ukr. шaкaл).Appelatives having an insulting function have been used since the earliest times. Fine structure of "zero-mode" Landau levels in HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells

HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells with the inverted band structure have been probed using far infrared magneto-spectroscopy. Realistic calculations of Landau level diagrams have been performed to identify the observed transitions. Investigations have been greatly focused on the magnetic field dependence of the peculiar pair of "zero-mode" Landau levels which characteristically split from the upper conduction and bottom valence bands, and merge under the applied magnetic field. The observed avoided crossing of these levels is tentatively attributed to the bulk inversion asymmetry of zinc blend compounds.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Nature-based solutions and mental health

    Get PDF
This chapter demonstrates the mental health benefits of nature-based solutions in cities. First, factors that determine urban mental health and adverse health effects of environmental stressors in cities are explained. Second, it is demonstrated that green spaces as nature-based solutions for many societal challenges provide co-benefits for mental health by reducing these stressors. It is further discussed how nature-based solutions may target supporting mental health by providing resources for human–nature interaction, enhancing social interaction and strengthening mental resilience. Nature-based interventions that are originally intended to support persons with psychiatric illness are introduced as models for the design of mentally supportive cities. And third, two case studies illustrate the mental health benefits of urban parks with the example of Leipzig, Germany and of street trees by the example of Hyderabad, India. The two case studies were used as application cases for a recent conceptual framework as a guide for putting science into practice

Post-treatment follow-up is an essential component of comprehensive cancer care. Determining optimal follow-up schedules is crucial on clinical, organisational and economic grounds. Owing to the scarcity of prospective clinical follow-up trials, most recommendations are based on retrospective studies and expert opinions. In 2014, the first post-treatment follow-up recommendations in the most common solid malignancies was published by Polish oncology and family medicine experts. In this article, we present an update of this document that takes into account the current literature and the quality of the available scientific evidence.

Healthy living on a healthy planet - Summary

Our lifestyle is making us ill and is destroying the natural life-support systems. In the vision of ‘healthy living on a healthy planet’, human spheres of life – what we eat, how we move, where we live – are designed to be both healthy and environmentally compatible, and planetary risks – climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution – have been overcome. Health systems harness their transformative potential; education and science promote societal change. The vision can only be realized with international cooperation and requires what the WBGU terms global urgency governance
