Cylindrical indicator has probe with coil spring to provide force and indicating dial. Probe is manually pressed against area to be tested until complete foot area contacts foam surfaces
Heteronuclear ionizing collisions between laser-cooled metastable helium atoms
We have investigated cold ionizing heteronuclear collisions in dilute
mixtures of metastable (2 3S1) 3He and 4He atoms, extending our previous work
on the analogous homonuclear collisions [R. J. W. Stas et al., PRA 73, 032713
(2006)]. A simple theoretical model of such collisions enables us to calculate
the heteronuclear ionization rate coefficient, for our quasi-unpolarized gas,
in the absence of resonant light (T = 1.2 mK): K34(th) = 2.4*10^-10 cm^3/s.
This calculation is supported by a measurement of K34 using magneto-optically
trapped mixtures containing about 1*10^8 atoms of each species, K34(exp) =
2.5(8)*10^-10 cm^3/s. Theory and experiment show good agreement.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Moduli Spaces of Lumps on Real Projective Space
Harmonic maps that minimize the Dirichlet energy in their homotopy classes are known as lumps. Lump solutions on real projective space are explicitly given by rational maps subject to a certain symmetry requirement. This has consequences for the behaviour of lumps and their symmetries. An interesting feature is that the moduli space of charge three lumps is a D2-symmetric 7-dimensional manifold of cohomogeneity one. In this paper, we discuss the charge three moduli spaces of lumps from two perspectives: discrete symmetries of lumps and the Riemann-Hurwitz formula. We then calculate the metric and find explicit formula for various geometric quantities. We also discuss the implications for lump decay
Charge density of a positively charged vector boson may be negative
The charge density of vector particles, for example W, may change sign. The
effect manifests itself even for a free propagation; when the energy of the
W-boson is higher than sqrt{2}m and the standing-wave is considered the charge
density oscillates in space. The charge density of W also changes sign in close
vicinity of a Coulomb center. The dependence of this effect on the g-factor for
an arbitrary vector boson, for example rho-meson, is discussed. An origin of
this surprising effect is traced to the electric quadrupole moment and
spin-orbit interaction of vector particles. Their contributions to the current
have a polarization nature. The charge density of this current, rho = -\nabla
\cdot P, where P is an effective polarization vector that depends on the
quadrupole moment and spin-orbit interaction, oscillates in space, producing
zero contribution to the total charge.Comment: 4 pages, revte
Witten's 2+1 gravity on R x (Klein bottle)
Witten's formulation of 2+1 gravity is investigated on the nonorientable
three-manifold R x (Klein bottle). The gauge group is taken to consist of all
four components of the 2+1 Poincare group. We analyze in detail several
components of the classical solution space, and we show that from four of the
components one can recover nondegenerate spacetime metrics. In particular, from
one component we recover metrics for which the Klein bottles are spacelike. An
action principle is formulated for bundles satisfying a certain orientation
compatibility property, and the corresponding components of the classical
solution space are promoted into a phase space. Avenues towards quantization

Chen-Ruan cohomology of ADE singularities
We study Ruan's \textit{cohomological crepant resolution conjecture} for
orbifolds with transversal ADE singularities. In the -case we compute both
the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring and the quantum corrected
cohomology ring . The former is achieved in general, the
later up to some additional, technical assumptions. We construct an explicit
isomorphism between and in the -case,
verifying Ruan's conjecture. In the -case, the family
is not defined for . This implies that
the conjecture should be slightly modified. We propose a new conjecture in the
-case which we prove in the -case by constructing an explicit

Searching for "monogenic diabetes" in dogs using a candidate gene approach
BACKGROUND: Canine diabetes is a common endocrine disorder with an estimated breed-related prevalence ranging from 0.005% to 1.5% in pet dogs. Increased prevalence in some breeds suggests that diabetes in dogs is influenced by genetic factors and similarities between canine and human diabetes phenotypes suggest that the same genes might be associated with disease susceptibility in both species. Between 1-5% of human diabetes cases result from mutations in a single gene, including maturity onset diabetes of the adult (MODY) and neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM). It is not clear whether monogenic forms of diabetes exist within some dog breeds. Identification of forms of canine monogenic diabetes could help to resolve the heterogeneity of the condition and lead to development of breed-specific genetic tests for diabetes susceptibility. RESULTS: Seventeen dog breeds were screened for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in eighteen genes that have been associated with human MODY/NDM. Six SNP associations were found from five genes, with one gene (ZFP57) being associated in two different breeds. CONCLUSIONS: Some of the genes that have been associated with susceptibility to MODY and NDM in humans appear to also be associated with canine diabetes, although the limited number of associations identified in this study indicates canine diabetes is a heterogeneous condition and is most likely to be a polygenic trait in most dog breeds. Density Functional Theory for the Photoionization Dynamics of Uracil
Photoionization dynamics of the RNA base Uracil is studied in the framework
of Density Functional Theory (DFT). The photoionization calculations take
advantage of a newly developed parallel version of a multicentric approach to
the calculation of the electronic continuum spectrum which uses a set of
B-spline radial basis functions and a Kohn-Sham density functional hamiltonian.
Both valence and core ionizations are considered. Scattering resonances in
selected single-particle ionization channels are classified by the symmetry of
the resonant state and the peak energy position in the photoelectron kinetic
energy scale; the present results highlight once more the site specificity of
core ionization processes. We further suggest that the resonant structures
previously characterized in low-energy electron collision experiments are
partly shifted below threshold by the photoionization processes. A critical
evaluation of the theoretical results providing a guide for future experimental
work on similar biosystems
MERLIN radio detection of an interaction zone within a binary Orion proplyd system
Presented here are high angular resolution MERLIN 5 GHz (6 cm) continuum
observations of the binary proplyd system, LV 1 in the Orion nebula, which
consists of proplyd 168--326SE and its binary proplyd companion 168--326NW
(separation 0.4 arcsec). Accurate astrometric alignment allows a detailed
comparison between these data and published HST PC Halpha and [Oiii] images.
Thermal radio sources coincide with the two proplyds and originate in the
ionized photoevaporating flows seen in the optical emission lines. Flow
velocities of approx 50 km/s from the ionized proplyd surfaces and \geq 100
km/s from a possible micro-jet have been detected using the Manchester Echelle
spectrometer.
A third radio source is found to coincide with a region of extended, high
excitation, optical line emission that lies between the binary proplyds
168--326SE/326NW . This is modelled as a bowshock due to the collision of the
photoevaporating flows from the two proplyds. Both a thermal and a non-thermal
origin for the radio emission in this collision zone are considered.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, accepted by Ap
Search for LBV Candidates in the M33 Galaxy
A total of 185 luminous blue variable (LBV) candidates with V < 18.5 and B-V
< 0.35 are selected based on the photometrical Survey of Local Group Galaxies
made by P. Massey et al. 2006. The candidates were selected using aperture
photometry of H-alpha images. The primary selection criterion is that the
prospective candidate should be a blue star with H-aplha emission. In order not
to miss appreciably reddened LBV candidates, we compose an additional list of
25 presumably reddened (0.35 < B-V < 1.2, V < 18.5) emission star candidates. A
comparison with the list of known variables in the M33 galaxy showed 29% of our
selected candidates to be photometrically variable. We also find our list to
agree well with the lists of emission-line objects obtained in earlier papers
