    Lower Aptian rudist faunas from Croatia consist of Requienia? zlatarskii PAQUIER, Toucasia sp., Agriopleura sp., Glossomyophorus costatus MASSE, SKELTON & SLISKOVIC, Himeraelites sp. and Offneria sp. This assemblage has a clear Southern Tethyan (Arabo–African) significance and typifies the Early Aptian. Faunas from the interior of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform in Istria are dominated by Requieniidae while those from the northeastern area in the vicinity of Tounj–Ogulin, close to the platform margin, exhibit a higher diversity and include, beside requieniids, Caprinidae, Caprotinidae and Monopleuridae, in conjunction with evidence of open marine conditions

    Physico-chemical characteristics and methanogen communities in swine and dairy manure storage tanks: Spatio-temporal variations and impact on methanogenic activity

    Greenhouse gas emissions represent a major environmental problem associated with the management of manure from the livestock industry. Methane is the primary GHG emitted during manure outdoor storage. In this paper, the variability of two swine and two dairy manure storage tanks was surveyed, in terms of physico-chemical and microbiological parameters. The impact of the inter-tank and spatio-temporal variations of these parameters on the methanogenic activity of manure was ascertained. A Partial Least Square regression was carried out, which demonstrated that physico-chemical as well as microbiological parameters had a major influence on the methanogenic activity. Among the 19 parameters included in the regression, the concentrations of VFAs had the strongest negative influence on the methane emission rate of manure, resulting from their well-known inhibitory effect. The relative abundance of two amplicons in archaeal fingerprints was found to positively influence the methanogenic activity, suggesting that Methanoculleus spp. and possibly Methanosarcina spp. are major contributors to methanogenesis in storage tanks.     Towards a terramechanics for bio-in spired locomotion in granular environments

    Granular media (GM) present locomotor challenges for terrestrial and extraterrestrial devices because they can flow and solidify in response to localized intrusion of wheels, limbs and bodies. While the development of airplanes and submarines is aided by understanding of hydrodynamics, fundamental theory does not yet exist to describe the complex interactions of locomotors with GM. In this paper, we use experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches to develop a terramechanics for bio-inspired locomotion in granular environments. We use a fluidized bed to prepare GM with a desired global packing fraction, and use empirical force measurements and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to elucidate interaction mechanics during locomotion-relevant intrusions in GM such as vertical penetration and horizontal drag. We develop a resistive force theory (RFT) to account for more complex intrusions. We use these force models to understand the locomotor performance of two bio-inspired robots moving on and within GM.     Structural, electrical, and optical properties of CuGaSe2 rf sputtered thin films

    Thin films of CuGaSe2 have been produced by rf sputtering. Compositional, structural, electrical, and optical properties are strongly influenced by growthtemperature. At substrate temperatures lower than 300 °C amorphous or poorly crystalline Se‐excess films are obtained, showing high resistivity (≊103 Ω cm) and optical transitions at 1.62, 1.80, and 2.4 eV (values lower than the single‐crystal counterparts). At the higher growthtemperatures,polycrystalline films are obtained (average grain size 0.7 ÎŒm) with lower values of resistivity (1 Ω cm), and optical transitions at 1.68, 1.90, and 2.55 eV (very close to the single‐crystal values). A hopping conduction mechanism has been detected at the lower measuringtemperature (T150 K).     Potential for the psychrophilic anaerobic treatment of swine manure using a sequencing batch reactor

The feasibility of psychrophilic anaerobic digestion (PAD) in intermittently fed sequencing batch reactors (SBR) was investigated during the start-up run of an ongoing laboratory study. The start-up run results indicated that PAD in SBRs was efficient in stabilizing and deodorizing swine manure slurry. The digester effluents had little odour when compared to the raw manure. Total chemical oxygen demand (COD) was reduced by 58 to 73% and soluble COD (SCOD) by 85 to 96%. Methane production varied from 0.30 to 0.66 L CH4/g volatile solids added and methane concentration in the biogas ranged from 50 to 80%. The biog<ls production rate continued to increase even when concentrations of acetic acid and ammonia nitrogen were as high as 5500 mg/L and 3700 mg/L, respectively. Les resultats experimentaux ont demontre que cette nouvelle technologie desodorise et stabilise Ie lisier de porco Le lisier traite est presque inodore comparativement au lisier de porc brut: La demande chimique en oxygene totale a ele reduite de 58 it 73%. La demande en oxygene chimique soluble a subit une forte diminution variant de 85 it 96%. La production de methane etait de 0.30 it 0.66 litre de CH4 par gramme de solides volatiles alimentes aux bio-reacteurs. La concentration du methane dans Ie biogaz variait entre 50 et 80%. Ce procede est tres stable, il n'est pas affecte par des concentrations elevees d'acide acetique (5500 mg/l) et ammoniac (3700 mg/l)

    Long-lived photoexcited states in polydiacetylenes with different molecular and supramolecular organization

    With the aim of determining the importance of the molecular and supramolecular organization on the excited states of polydiacetylenes, we have studied the photoinduced absorption spectra of the red form of poly[1,6-bis(3,6-didodecyl-N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne] (polyDCHD-S) and the results compared with those of the blue form of the same polymer. An interpretation of the data is given in terms of both the conjugation length and the interbackbone separation also in relation to the photoinduced absorption spectra of both blue and red forms of poly[1,6-bis(N-carbazolyl)-2,4-hexadiyne] (polyDCHD), which does not carry the alkyl substituents on the carbazolyl side groups. Information on the above properties is derived from the analysis of the absorption and Raman spectra of this class of polydiacetylenes
