Primary total knee arthroplasty in hemophilic arthropathy

    Get PDF
Advanced hemophilic knee arthropathy is a frequent and devastating manifestation of severe hemophilia with significant implications for activities of daily living. Hemophilic arthropathy is caused by repeated bleeding, resulting in joint degeneration, pain, deformity and disability. In patients with hemophilia and advanced disease, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has proven to be the most successful intervention, improves physical function and reduces knee pain. Hemophilic patients carry additional risks for complications and required specific pre/ postoperative considerations. Expert treatment center should be used to improve patient outcome. Hemophilic patients present significant surgical challenges such as joint destruction, bone loss, severe ankylosis and oligoarticular involvement. The surgeon performing the arthroplasty must be experienced to manage such problems

Green Edge ice camp campaigns : understanding the processes controlling the under-ice Arctic phytoplankton spring bloom

The Green Edge initiative was developed to investigate the processes controlling the primary productivity and fate of organic matter produced during the Arctic phytoplankton spring bloom (PSB) and to determine its role in the ecosystem. Two field campaigns were conducted in 2015 and 2016 at an ice camp located on landfast sea ice southeast of Qikiqtarjuaq Island in Baffin Bay (67.4797∘ N, 63.7895∘ W). During both expeditions, a large suite of physical, chemical and biological variables was measured beneath a consolidated sea-ice cover from the surface to the bottom (at 360 m depth) to better understand the factors driving the PSB. Key variables, such as conservative temperature, absolute salinity, radiance, irradiance, nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll a concentration, bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance and taxonomy, and carbon stocks and fluxes were routinely measured at the ice camp. Meteorological and snow-relevant variables were also monitored. Here, we present the results of a joint effort to tidy and standardize the collected datasets, which will facilitate their reuse in other Arctic studies

Photonic colloidal crystals with a controlled architecture

This manuscript deals with the elaboration of photonic crystals with a controlled architecture from the self-assembly of colloidal particles. We presented in a first part the synthesis of mineral and organic monodisperse colloidal particles and the method of elaboration of colloidal photonic crystals with a homogenous thickness. Crystalline quality of the colloidal assemblies has been investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy and their optical properties characterized by Near InfraRed spectroscopy. In order to modulate the architecture of the materials, we have elaborated heterostructures consisting in the superposition of two colloidal crystals of particles of different diameter, or we have inserted in a controlled manner planar defects made of monolayers of colloidal spheres of different diameter or different nature inside the crystals. The structure-optical properties relationship of these materials has been systematically investigated. Such a study is a clear example of the wide diversity of optical properties that can be obtained by precisely tailoring the architecture of colloidal photonic crystals
