Temporal Evolution of Financial Market Correlations
We investigate financial market correlations using random matrix theory and
principal component analysis. We use random matrix theory to demonstrate that
correlation matrices of asset price changes contain structure that is
incompatible with uncorrelated random price changes. We then identify the
principal components of these correlation matrices and demonstrate that a small
number of components accounts for a large proportion of the variability of the
markets that we consider. We then characterize the time-evolving relationships
between the different assets by investigating the correlations between the
asset price time series and principal components. Using this approach, we
uncover notable changes that occurred in financial markets and identify the
assets that were significantly affected by these changes. We show in particular
that there was an increase in the strength of the relationships between several

In this paper, the feasibility of using electromagnetic (EM) waves is determining the moisture content of building fabrics and the case of water ingress in experimentally assessed. This paper will concentrate on investigating the propagation of EM waves through typical structures and their interaction with concealed pipework, wiring and timber. All current methods are overviewed and analysed. Novel microwave sensor described in this paper operates in 6 GHz to 12 GHz frequency range using Marconi 6200A microwave test set. Results of experimental test confirm that microwaves can be used as an alternative nondestructive method for identifying different object behind the walls
Correlation of the Quasi-Periodic Oscillation Frequencies of White Dwarf, Neutron Star, and Black Hole Binaries
Using data obtained in 1994 June/July with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer
deep survey photometer and in 2001 January with the Chandra X-ray Observatory
Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph, we investigate the
extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray oscillations of the dwarf nova SS Cyg
in outburst. We find quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at nu_0 ~ 0.012 Hz and
nu_1 ~ 0.13 Hz in the EUV flux and at nu_0 ~ 0.0090 Hz, nu_1 ~ 0.11 Hz, and
possibly nu_2 ~ nu_0 + nu_1 ~ 0.12 Hz in the soft X-ray flux. These data,
combined with the optical data of Woudt & Warner for VW Hyi, extend the
Psaltis, Belloni, & van der Klis nu_high-nu_low correlation for neutron star
and black hole low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) nearly two orders of magnitude
in frequency, with nu_low ~ 0.08 nu_high. This correlation identifies the
high-frequency quasi-coherent oscillations (so-called ``dwarf nova
oscillations'') of cataclysmic variables (CVs) with the kilohertz QPOs of
LMXBs, and the low-frequency QPOs of CVs with the horizontal branch
oscillations (or the broad noise component identified as such) of LMXBs.
Assuming that the same mechanisms produce the QPOs in white dwarf, neutron
star, and black hole binaries, we find that the data exclude the relativistic
precession model and the magnetospheric and sonic-point beat-frequency models
(as well as any model requiring the presence or absence of a stellar surface or
magnetic field); more promising are models that interpret QPOs as

What Does an Exemplary Middle School Mathematics Teacher Look Like? The Use of a Professional Development Rubric
A School University Research Network (SURN) committee composed of current mathematics teachers, central ofïŹce math supervisors, building administrators, mathematicians, and mathematics educators researched numerous sources regarding best practices in mathematics instruction. The resulting professional development rubric synthesizes their findings and can serve a professional development role by providing teachers and administrators with a tool to develop clarity and consensus on best mathematics instructional practices, and how these practices are implemented in the classroom. It is also being used as a tool for cooperating teachers in their supervision of student teachers and as a reïŹective method for self-evaluation
Dynamic communities in multichannel data: An application to the foreign exchange market during the 2007--2008 credit crisis
We study the cluster dynamics of multichannel (multivariate) time series by
representing their correlations as time-dependent networks and investigating
the evolution of network communities. We employ a node-centric approach that
allows us to track the effects of the community evolution on the functional
roles of individual nodes without having to track entire communities. As an
example, we consider a foreign exchange market network in which each node
represents an exchange rate and each edge represents a time-dependent
correlation between the rates. We study the period 2005-2008, which includes
the recent credit and liquidity crisis. Using dynamical community detection, we
find that exchange rates that are strongly attached to their community are
persistently grouped with the same set of rates, whereas exchange rates that
are important for the transfer of information tend to be positioned on the
edges of communities. Our analysis successfully uncovers major trading changes

Autistic Traits Mediate Reductions in Social Attention in Adults with Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with difficulties in social and emotional functioning. A significant proportion of individuals with AN show autistic traits, which may influence social attention. This study examined attention to faces and facial features in AN, recovered AN (REC), and healthy controls, as well as relationships with comorbid psychopathology. One hundred and forty-eight participantsâ eye movements were tracked while watching a naturalistic social scene. Anxiety, depression, alexithymia, and autistic traits were assessed via self-report questionnaires. Participants with AN spent significantly less time looking at faces compared to REC and controls; patterns of attention to individual facial features did not differ across groups. The impact of digital technology in care homes on unplanned secondary care usage and associated costs
\ua9 The Author(s) 2024.Background: A substantial number of Emergency Department (ED) attendances by care home residents are potentially avoidable. Health Call Digital Care Homes is an app-based technology that aims to streamline residentsâ care by recording their observations such as vital parameters electronically. Observations are triaged by remote clinical staff. This study assessed the effectiveness of the Health Call technology to reduce unplanned secondary care usage and associated costs. Methods: A retrospective analysis of health outcomes and economic impact based on an intervention. The study involved 118 care homes across the North East of UK from 2018 to 2021. Routinely collected NHS secondary care data from County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust was linked with data from the Health Call app. Three outcomes were modelled monthly using Generalised Linear Mixed Models: counts of emergency attendances, emergency admissions and length of stay of emergency admissions. A similar approach was taken for costs. The impact of Health Call was tested on each outcome using the models. Findings: Data from 8,702 residents were used in the analysis. Results show Health Call reduces the number of emergency attendances by 11% [6â15%], emergency admissions by 25% [20â39%] and length of stay by 11% [3â18%] (with an additional month-by-month decrease of 28% [24â34%]). The cost analysis found a cost reduction of \ua357 per resident in 2018, increasing to \ua3113 in 2021. Interpretation: The introduction of a digital technology, such as Health Call, could significantly reduce contacts with and costs resulting from unplanned secondary care usage by care home residents

Competition Between Antiferromagnetic Order and Spin-Liquid Behavior in the Two-Dimensional Periodic Anderson Model at Half-Filling
We study the two-dimensional periodic Anderson model at half-filling using
quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques. The ground state undergoes a magnetic
order-disorder transition as a function of the effective exchange coupling
between the conduction and localized bands. Low-lying spin and charge
excitations are determined using the maximum entropy method to analytically
continue the QMC data. At finite temperature we find a competition between the
Kondo effect and antiferromagnetic order which develops in the localized band
