Fresh look on triality
Investigating the symmetry in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) we show that
full QCD with a vacuum of vanishing baryonic number does not lead to metastable
phases. Rather in QCD with dynamical fermions, the degeneracy of phases
manifests itself in observables without open triality.Comment: 9 pages, 0 figures, latex, IK-TUW-Preprint 930840
Exact Multiplicities in the Three-Anyon Spectrum
Using the symmetry properties of the three-anyon spectrum, we obtain exactly
the multiplicities of states with given energy and angular momentum. The
results are shown to be in agreement with the proper quantum mechanical and
semiclassical considerations, and the unexplained points are indicated.Comment: 16 pages plus 3 postscript figures, Kiev Institute for Theoretical

Strain gradient induced polarization in SrTiO3 single crystals
Piezoelectricity is inherent only in noncentrosymmetric materials, but a
piezoelectric response can also be obtained in centrosymmetric crystals if
subjected to inhomogeneous deformation. This phenomenon, known as
flexoelectricity, affects the functional properties of insulators, particularly
thin films of high permittivity materials. We have measured
strain-gradient-induced polarization in single crystals of paraelectric
SrTiO as a function of temperature and orientation down to and below the
105 K phase transition. Estimates were obtained for all the components of the
flexoelectric tensor, and calculations based on these indicate that local
polarization around defects in SrTiO may exceed the largest ferroelectric
polarizations. A sign reversal of the flexoelectric response detected below the
phase transition suggests that the ferroelastic domain walls of SrTiO may
be polar.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Scattering on two Aharonov-Bohm vortices with opposite fluxes
The scattering of an incident plane wave on two Aharonov-Bohm vortices with
opposite fluxes is considered in detail. The presence of the vortices imposes
non-trivial boundary conditions for the partial waves on a cut joining the two
vortices. These conditions result in an infinite system of equations for
scattering amplitudes between incoming and outgoing partial waves, which can be
solved numerically. The main focus of the paper is the analytic determination
of the scattering amplitude in two limits, the small flux limit and the limit
of small vortex separation. In the latter limit the dominant contribution comes
from the S-wave amplitude. Calculating it, however, still requires solving an
infinite system of equations, which is achieved by the Riemann-Hilbert method.
The results agree well with the numerical calculations
Giant Flexoelectric Effect in Ferroelectric Epitaxial Thin Films
We report on nanoscale strain gradients in ferroelectric HoMnO3 epitaxial
thin films, resulting in a giant flexoelectric effect. Using grazing-incidence
in-plane X-ray diffraction, we measured strain gradients in the films, which
were 6 or 7 orders of magnitude larger than typical values reported for bulk
oxides. The combination of transmission electron microscopy, electrical
measurements, and electrostatic calculations showed that flexoelectricity
provides a means of tuning the physical properties of ferroelectric epitaxial
thin films, such as domain configurations and hysteresis curves.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Finite-size anyons and perturbation theory
We address the problem of finite-size anyons, i.e., composites of charges and
finite radius magnetic flux tubes. Making perturbative calculations in this
problem meets certain difficulties reminiscent of those in the problem of
pointlike anyons. We show how to circumvent these difficulties for anyons of
arbitrary spin. The case of spin 1/2 is special because it allows for a direct
application of perturbation theory, while for any other spin, a redefinition of
the wave function is necessary. We apply the perturbative algorithm to the
N-body problem, derive the first-order equation of state and discuss some
examples.Comment: 18 pages (RevTex) + 4 PS figures (all included); a new section on

Correlation Between Structure And C-Afm Contrast Of 180-Degree Domain Walls In Rhombohedral Bati03
Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory we describe 180-degree domain wall
structure, intrinsic energy and carrier accumulation in rhombohedral phase of
BaTiO3 as a function of the wall orientation and flexoelectric coupling
strength. Two types of domain wall structures (phases of the wall) exist
depending on the wall orientation. The low-energy 'achiral' phase occurs in the
vicinity of the {110} wall orientation and has odd polarization profile
invariant with respect to inversion about the wall center. The second 'chiral'
phase occurs around {211} wall orientations and corresponds to mixed parity
domain walls that may be of left-handed or right-handed chirality. The
transformation between the phases is abrupt, accompanied with 20-30% change of
the domain wall thickness and can happen at fixed wall orientation with
temperature change. We suggest that the phase transition may be detected
through domain wall thickness change or by c-AFM. The structure of the domain
wall is correlated to its conductivity through polarization component normal to
the domain wall, which causes free carriers accumulation. Depending on the
temperature and flexoelectric coupling strength relative conductivity of the
wall becomes at least one order of magnitude higher than in the single-domain
region, creating c-AFM contrast enhancement pronounced and detectable.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, Supplementary material
Critical behaviour of SU(2) lattice gauge theory. A complete analysis with the -method
We determine the critical point and the ratios and
of critical exponents of the deconfinement transition in gauge theory
by applying the -method to Monte Carlo data of the modulus and the
square of the Polyakov loop. With the same technique we find from the Binder
cumulant its universal value at the critical point in the thermodynamical
limit to and for the next-to-leading exponent .
From the derivatives of the Polyakov loop dependent quantities we estimate then
. The result from the derivative of is , in
complete agreement with that of the Ising model.Comment: 11 pages, 3 Postscript figures, uses Plain Te
