Testing for the extent of competition among banks in the Southern African Development Community ("SADC") region

    Get PDF
This paper analyses the competitiveness in the banking sector of eight countries in the SADC region. Both the Panzar-Rosse and the Lerner Index approaches were used for the period 2002- 2013. Although the results yield opposing outcomes, the overall findings suggest that the eight countries cannot be described as being perfectly competitive but rather suggest imperfect competition in these banking sectors. These countries could be characterised as monopolies when using the Panzar-Rosse study and monopolistically competitive when using the Lerner Index

Impact of circuit-breaker maintenance on life-cycle cost comparison for fixed and magnetically controlled reactors

    Get PDF
Abstract: Under light loading conditions, reactors provide an option for keeping voltages below steady state limits. In this paper, the impact of the number of operations of a circuit breaker on the choice of reactor technology (i.e. fixed versus magnetically controlled) is studied. In particular, the impact of circuit-breaker maintenance cost on the life-cycle cost of a reactor installation is evaluated. The study shows that when the expected number of circuit-breaker operations is high, it is beneficial to consider the use of a magnetically controlled reactor as this leads to very few operations. In addition, the savings in circuit-breaker maintenance cost can justify the extra cost of a magnetically controlled reactor over its life cycle. The economic life-cycle cost assessment can help to identify the lowest cost solution over the project life cycle

Evaluation of the level of community participation in the implementation of the Indigent Exit Strategy as a poverty alleviation measure in the City of Tshwane

    Get PDF
The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of community participation employed by the City of Tshwane in the implementation of the Indigent Exit Strategy (IES) as a poverty alleviation measure in Olievenhoutbosch. A total of twenty two respondents participated in the research. The first group was ten beneficiaries and the second was ten that was exited from the database. Lastly, two Social Workers coordinating the programme were interviewed as well. The research findings reflect that the IES was not sufficiently rolled out as outlined in the policy and strategy. Capacity building and skills development, assistance to emerging entrepreneurships and other forms of economic development support did not reach out to the broader community as outlined in the IES. The study recommends that: the Indigent Exit Strategy interventions should be made accessible to the registered indigent households so that they can clearly know what is expected of them.Development StudiesM. Magister Legum - LLMThis year marks 57 years since Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was formed on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This year also marks 18 years since the African Union (AU) was formed on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa. This year further marks 39 years since the adoption of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Charter) was adopted on 27 June 1981 in Nairobi, Kenya. This was recorded as historic step towards the protection of human rights in Africa

The production of vegetable crops under protection for small-scale farming situations

Experiments were conducted with tomato under shade netting and with lettuce in a vertical hydroponic system at the Hatfield Experimental Farm, University of Pretoria. The objectives of the study were: 1. To evaluate the effect of different types of shade netting on tomato production 2. To develop a vertical hydroponic system for lettuce production which would be suitable for use by small-scale farmers. In the tomato trial the highest number of fruit per plant (47) was produced under 12% white shade and 40% black shade nets, and the lowest fruit number (35) was produced under 30% black net. The highest yield of 6.2 kg per plant was obtained under the 18% white net while 30% black net produced the lowest yield of 3.9 kg per plant. The test yield of lettuce grown in plastic tubes with eight vertically arranged plant positions were obtained with a continuous high flow rate of the nutrient solution. However, a simplified manual system where the nutrient solution was delivered by gravity from a small reservoir tank resulted in comparable yields.Dissertation (M Inst Agrar (Agronomy))--University of Pretoria, 2007.Plant Production and Soil Scienceunrestricte

Challenges facing water supply in the Polokwane Municipality, Mankweng Cluster

Polokwane Local Municipality is one of many municipalities in South Africa experiencing challenges of providing potable water services to their local residents. Residents’ dissatisfaction about poor potable water services have manifested in community protests. The study, which looks at the communities’ experience within the Makweng Cluster, aims to assess the main constraints facing Polokwane Local Municipality in providing potable water to the Mankweng Cluster

High AIDS-related mortality among young women in rural KwaZulu-Natal

    Get PDF
Objective. To establish mortality rates and cause of death in a rural community in KwaZulu-Natal. This study was conducted as part of a demographic and health survey to assess the impact of HIV infection in this community. Methods. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between February and July 2004. The survey made use of structured questionnaires and verbal autopsies, which yielded detailed information at household level, including the demographic profile of residents, mortality rates and cause of mortality between February 2003 and February 2004.Results. The overall mortality rate in this community was 2.9 deaths per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.5 - 3.3 per 100 person-years). The highest mortality rate among women occurred in the 30 - 34-year age group, while among men it occurred in the 35 - 39 and > 60-year age groups. Of the 185 verbal autopsies reported, 77 deaths (42%) were attributable to AIDS. The survey revealed that women aged 20 - 24 and men aged 35 - 39 years were bearing a disproportionately large burden of AIDS-related mortality in this community.Conclusion. AIDS-related mortality was found to be disproportionately high in young women in this small rural community, and the majority of deaths resulted from pulmonary tuberculosis. The need to strengthen prevention and treatment efforts in this and similar settings is highlighted

An Assessment of the Level of Occupational Stress among Police Officers in the Sebokeng Cluster

    Get PDF
Occupational stress among police officers is an important area of research because of the realisation that less stressed police officers are more effective and they tend to stay longer with the employing department. The spinoffs of longer stay with the safety and security department are, inter alia, less training costs on replacement staff, utilisation of more experienced staff in critical safety and security areas, and organisational commitment. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 276 police officers. A stratified random sampling technique was utilised to draw units of analysis for the study. A response rate of 75% was obtained. Responses were analysed using frequency analysis. The results confirmed that police officers in the Sebokeng Cluster experienced role conflict. The findings from the study were also that police officers did not experience role overload and role ambiguity. DOI: 10.5901/mjss.2015.v6n1s1p25
