    Analysis of the Role of Plant Resources Harvested from Kigwena and Rumonge Forests, Burundi. The main objective of this study was to inventory the natural plant resources harvested by local populations in the forests of Kigwena and Rumonge, both located in South-Western Burundi, relatively closer, but physionomically different. Eighty and 41 species of medicinal plants, 33 and 25 species used for their materials, 21 and 23 edible species, 14 and 19 species for energy use, and 5 and 12 species for cultural use were respectively noticed. Among the collected species, 42.7% and 55.4% respectively served for multiple uses. In the forest of Kigwena, the leaves (26.7%) and stems (28%) were the most collected plant parts whereas in the forest of Rumonge the stems (35.7%) were the dominant category. Edible mushrooms, honey and termites are also collected in the two forests. Both forests play consequently a significant role by offering to the local populations the possibility to diversify their incomes (various products marketed along the roads and in the urban centres), their food, and, in particular, their popular medicine

    In order to highlight the distribution of frequencies of plants with the purpose of natural heritage preservation, an analysis of occurrences of vascular plants based on botanical observations in a set of 114 sample plots has been conducted in the Ruvubu National Park (Burundi). Analysis of the general list (richness) of the flora shows on one hand the specific richness variation of families within ecosystems, and on another hand species with particular statute by their frequencies of occurrence. Within the protected area, evenness indicates a light balance in plant distribution. Nevertheless, unevenness is observed in savannas whereas species distribution in the forest galleries and swamps is relatively equitable. Ten species are listed on the IUCN threatened species list of Burundi which corresponds to a high priority for conservation. These species may warrant special conservation effort and spatial analysis of their potential distribution in Burundi in order to assess species deterioration and the spatio-temporal dynamics of ecosystems that shelter them. © EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2010.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Etude analytique de la flore et de la végétation du Parc National de la Ruvubu, Burundi

    Les études relatives à la flore et à la végétation des aires protégées du Burundi et particulièrement du Parc National de la Ruvubu, la plus grande aire protégée du pays, sont encore fragmentaires. Cette étude se fixe comme objectifs d’individualiser, définir et réaliser une classification syntaxonomique des groupements végétaux de cette aire protégée ainsi que d’évaluer leur structure et diversité. L’étude fournit la liste et la classification des communautés végétales du parc à l’aide de la méthode phytosociologique classique. La richesse spécifique, les indices de diversité de Margalef et de Shannon ainsi que l’équitabilité ont servi à évaluer la diversité et la structure des groupements. Dix groupements variant principalement selon les gradients topographique, pédologique, hydrologique, l’action perturbatrice des feux et le microclimat ont été individualisés. Le statut syntaxonomique des autres unités connues à partir de la littérature a été clarifié. Cinq groupements sont nouveaux: un groupement en savanes (savanes à Hyparrhenia diplandra et Entada abyssinica), deux groupements dans les galeries forestières (galeries forestières à Syzygium cordatum et Aframomum angustifolium, galeries forestières à Syzygium cordatum et Alchornea cordifolia) et deux groupements dans les marais (marais inondés à Cyperus latifolius et Dissotis ruandensis, marais peu inondés à Dissotis brazzae).© 2010 International Formulae Group.
