    Dynamics of Bound Magnon Pairs in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Frustrated Magnet LiCuVO_4

    We report on the dynamics of the spin-1/2 quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnet LiCuVO4\mathrm{_4} measured by nuclear spin relaxation in high magnetic fields 10--34 T, in which the ground state has spin-density-wave order. The spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase exhibit striking anisotropy with respect to the magnetic field. The transverse excitation spectrum probed by 51^{51}V nuclei has an excitation gap, which increases with field. On the other hand, the gapless longitudinal fluctuations sensed by 7^7Li nuclei grow with lowering temperature, but tend to be suppressed with increasing field. Such anisotropic spin dynamics and its field dependence agree with the theoretical predictions and are ascribed to the formation of bound magnon pairs, a remarkable consequence of the frustration between ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Wasabi versus red imported fire ants: preliminary test of repellency of microencapsulated allyl isothiocyanate against Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) using bait traps in Taiwan

    Sea container has been identified as a major pathway for the unintended entry and spread of alien ant species. In Japan, red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), which are among the most harmful alien ants, were first detected in a shipping container from China in May 2017, and the invasion into Japan via the trade pathway is still continuing. To prevent containers contaminated with S. invicta and its establishment in Japan, control measures, such as repellents, are urgently required. The present study is the first to evaluate repellency of microencapsulated allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) against S. invicta, as a preliminary step to use the innovative equipment for invasive species management in sea containers. In a field in Taiwan heavily infested with S. invicta, a repellent test of microencapsulated AITC using bait traps showed that the equipment completely prevents S. invicta from accessing the bait. Due to its volatility and irritancy, AITC, a safe natural repellant in wasabi (Eutrema japonicum (Miq.) Kiudz), has not been used for pest management in containerized cargo. However, the encapsulation of AITC solves this problem by allowing controlled vapor release. Microencapsulated AITC has considerable potential as an effective measure to stop the spread of S. invicta through global trade

    Extracting discriminative features using task-oriented gaze maps measured from observers for personal attribute classification

    We discuss how to reveal and use the gaze locations of observers who view pedestrian images for personal attribute classification. Observers look at informative regions when attempting to classify the attributes of pedestrians in images. Thus, we hypothesize that the regions in which observers’ gaze locations are clustered will contain discriminative features for the classifiers of personal attributes. Our method acquires the distribution of gaze locations from several observers while they perform the task of manually classifying each personal attribute. We term this distribution a task-oriented gaze map. To extract discriminative features, we assign large weights to the region with a cluster of gaze locations in the task-oriented gaze map. In our experiments, observers mainly looked at different regions of body parts when classifying each personal attribute. Furthermore, our experiments show that the gaze-based feature extraction method significantly improved the performance of personal attribute classification when combined with a convolutional neural network or metric learning technique

    Growth of Acetaminophen Polymorphic Crystals and Solution-Mediated Phase Transition from Trihydrate to Form II in Agarose Gel

    The growth of acetaminophen polymorphic crystals and the solution-mediated phase transition from trihydrate to form II in agarose gel were investigated. The form II crystals grown in gels, presumably because of the agarose content, dissolved less rapidly at high temperatures and were more stable than in water. The trihydrate crystals in the gel were also expected to be stabilized by containing agarose, but in fact the fine morphology resulted in reduced stability. The solution-mediated phase transition from trihydrate to form II via form II seeding took longer in the gel because the gel slowed down the dissolution of the trihydrate by hindering the dispersion of the form II seeds and delayed the growth of form II by reducing the diffusion rate of the molecules dissolved from the trihydrate. Delays in solution-mediated phase transition and changes in stability for crystals grown in gels indicate the effectiveness of gels in controlling polymorphisms in pharmaceutical compounds.Nishigaki A., Maruyama M., Tanaka S.I., et al.     Acoustic Detection of an Unknown Bat Species in Okinawa

    Pipistrelles of the genus Hypsugo are among the rarest bats in Japan, known from a handful of records. In June 2018, a sequence of echolocation calls apparently by a bat of this genus was recorded by an automatic ultrasound recorder on the island of Okinawa. The calls closely resemble H. pulveratus, a Chinese species never before recorded in Japan, and H. alaschanicus, a very rare species in Japan. They also resemble calls of Hypsugo sp. bats from a small population recently discovered on nearby Amami-Oshima Island. The extreme rarity in our recordings, combined with lack of detection in Okinawa by other surveys, suggests that the individual was a vagrant. However, given the cryptic nature of the species on Amami, it remains possible that there is a small and likely endangered resident population, underlining the need for further bat surveys on Okinawa and other Nansei Islands
