Hodgkin's disease of the thoracic vertebrae

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Hodgkin's disease rarely occurs in the spine, which is usually a setting for the advanced form of the disease. PURPOSE: To describe an unusual case of isolated, primary spinal Hodgkin's disease and to draw attention to this disease as a possible diagnosis in patients with mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate lesions located in the thoracic spine. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: A case report of a 28-year-old woman who presented with back pain and progressive weakness in the lower extremities as a result of spinal cord compression from Hodgkin's disease of the thoracic vertebrae. METHODS: We report a new case of spinal cord compression resulting from Hodgkin's disease of the thoracic vertebrae. Decompression surgery was performed in the patient, followed by antibiotic treatment. RESULTS: Antibiotic therapy temporarily improved inflammation and fever. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation showed that the inflammatory reaction in the lesion was not completely resolved. The disease progressed and later investigations revealed Hodgkin's disease, which improved with a course of chemotherapy and radiation. CONCLUSIONS: Hodgkin's disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spinal neoplastic lesions with clinical features similar to spondylitis. Because MRI evaluation showed that the vertebral disc was maintained in this case, the presence of a tumor rather than inflammation should have been suspected.ArticleSPINE JOURNAL. 13(8):E59-E63 (2013)journal articl

    Oseltamivir (Tamiflu®)-induced pneumonia

    Get PDF
SummaryWe report the first case of oseltamivir-induced pneumonia. A 50-year-old man was diagnosed with influenza and prescribed oseltamivir. He had a persistent high fever, and developed a productive cough with peripheral blood eosinophilia and his chest radiograph showed ground glass opacity. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and histological findings obtained from transbronchial lung biopsy suggested eosinophilic pneumonia with component of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia. Drug lymphocyte stimulation test against oseltamivir was positive. In spite of discontinuation of oseltamivir, his condition did not ameliorate. He was treated with prednisolone for oseltamivir-induced lung injury and the symptoms improved immediately. We should recognize oseltamivir-induced pneumonia as a differential diagnosis in the case of developing pneumonia following treatment with oseltamivir

Composition and Monthly Changes of the Volatile Constituents in the Sour Hetsuka-daidai Citrus Peel

Sour citrus are prized for their flavor and fragrance. This work identified the components of the peel oil of Hetsuka-daidai (Citrus sp. hetsukadaidai), a special sour citrus that is native to the southern part of the Osumi peninsula, Kagoshima, Japan. These compounds were compared to those identified from the peels of six other major sour citrus: lime (Citrus latifolia), lemon (Citrus limon), Yuzu (Citrus junos), Kabusu (Citrus aurantium), Kabosu (Citrus sphaerocarpa), and Sudachi (Citrus sudachi). Peel oil contents were analyzed for the duration of four months during harvest season to investigate the differences in peel oil/ fragrance during ripening. These results could facilitate the development of preferred flavor and scent profiles using local species

Software and hardware platform for testing of Automatic Generation Control algorithms

    Get PDF
Development and implementation of new Automatic Generation Control (AGC) algorithms requires testing them on a model that adequately simulates primary energetic, information and control processes. In this article an implementation of a test platform based on HRTSim (Hybrid Real Time Simulator) and SCADA CK-2007 (which is widely used by the System Operator of Russia) is proposed. Testing of AGC algorithms on the test platform based on the same SCADA system that is used in operation allows to exclude errors associated with the transfer of AGC algorithms and settings from the test platform to a real power system. A power system including relay protection, automatic control systems and emergency control automatics can be accurately simulated on HRTSim. Besides the information commonly used by conventional AGC systems HRTSim is able to provide a resemblance of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) measurements (information about rotor angles, magnitudes and phase angles of currents and voltages etc.). The additional information significantly expands the number of possible AGC algorithms so the test platform is useful in modern AGC system developing. The obtained test results confirm that the proposed system is applicable for the tasks mentioned above

High-pressure-induced water penetration into 3-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase

Structures of 3-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase were determined at pressures ranging from 0.1 to 650 MPa. Comparison of these structures gives a detailed picture of the swelling of a cavity at the dimer interface and the generation of a new cleft on the molecular surface, which are accompanied by water penetration

Morphological and Biochemical Studies on Cultured Intervertebral Disc Cells with Special Reference to the Effect of Chymopapain

    Get PDF
To determine the mechanism of nucleus pulposus regeneration after chemonucleolysis with chymopapain, cultured annulus fibrosus (AF) cells and nucleus pulposus (NP) cells derived from the rabbit intervertebral disc were compared morphologically and biochemically. There was a difference in the characteristics of the two cells. The AF cells consisted chiefly of chondrocyte with high cell growth and matrix production activity, while most of the NP cells were notochordal cells. Chymopapain had cell toxity for AF and NP cells which inhibited sulfated glycosaminoglycans synthesis. But this inhibition was reversible and cell function recovered with the passage of time in AF cells. It may be concluded from this study that AF cells play a main role in nucleus pulposus regeneration after chemonucleolysis.
