Evidence for the singlet-dimer ground state in an S = 1 antiferromag netic bond alternating chain

Susceptibility, ESR and magnetization measurements have been performed on si ngle crystals of an S=1 bond alternating chain compound: [Ni(333-tet)(\mu-NO _2)](ClO_4) (333-tet = N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)propane-1,3-diamine) and the c ompound doped with a small amount of Zn. We observed an anomalous angular de pendence in the Zn-doped sample. These behaviors are well explained by the m odel based on the VBS picture for the singlet-dimer phase. The picture impli es that the free spins of S=1 with a positive single-ion anisotropy are indu ced at the edges of the chains without forming the singlet-dimer.Comment: RevTeX, 14pages (preprint.sty) with 5figures, submitted to Phys.

Outdoor air-ventilated crawls spaces are known to face problems caused by a high relative humidity inside the crawl space. The conditions then become favourable for different types of biological fouling. This in turn can have a negative impact on both the structural properties of building materials and the quality of the indoor air. Problems with high relative humidity are partly due to insufficient heating of the crawl space during the summer and partly due to a high moisture load from the ground below. In this report, new theoretical relations are derived that explain how the temperature beneath the floor structure is related to the temperature indoors, outdoors, and at the ground surface. The method can be used to estimate how the relative humidity varies inside the crawl space and how it can be affected by different measures. We have focused on measures based on combinations of controlled ventilation and heating, and developed a control algorithm which suggests that additional heating could be used periodically, during critical periods, to increase the amount of moisture that can be removed from the crawl space using ventilation

FOOT MOVEMENT IN IMPACT PHASE OF INSTEP KICKING IN SOCCER

    Get PDF
Ball impact technique is essential to produce a higher ball velocity in soccer instep kicking. However, to date only a few studies focused on foot kinematics during ball impact, in which plantar flexion motion of the foot was solely reported (Asai et al., 1995; Nunome et al., 2006). In this study, three-dimensional movement of the foot (plantar flexion / dorsal flexion, abduction / adduction, eversion / inversion) during ball impact was quantified to extract some movement characteristics releted to a higher ball velocity

Phosphoramidon inhibits the generation of endothelin-1 from exogenously applied big endothelin-1 in cultured vascular endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells

AbstractWhen cultured porcine aortic endothelial cells (ECs) were incubated with porcine big endothelin-1 (bit ET-I1–39), there was a time-dependent increase in immunoreactive (IR)-ET in the culture supernatant, in addition to an endogenous IR-ET release fron the cells. Reverse-phase HPLC of the culture supernatant revealed one major IR-ET component corresponding to the elution position of synthetic ET-1, thereby indicating that the additional increase in IR-ET was due to the conversion of big ET-1 to mature ET-11–21. Phosphoramidon, a metalloproteinase inhibitor, strongly suppressed this increase in IR-ET as well as the endogenous IR-ET release. Cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) also released IR-ET. The apparent conversion of exogenously applied big ET-1 to ET-1 and its inhibition by phosphoramidon were observed using cultured VSMCs, although the enzyme inhibitor did not influence the basal secretion of IR-ET from VSMCs. These results suggest that both cultured ECs and VSMCs can generate ET-1 from exogenously applied big ET-1 via action of the same type of phosphoramidon-sensitive metalloproteinase, which is also involved in the endogenous ET-1 generation in ECs

IgG4-related chronic rhinosinusitis: A new clinical entity of nasal disease

    Get PDF
Conclusion: IgG4-related disease involves nasal manifestations with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). This type of sinusitis is a new clinical entity of nasal disease associated with a high level of serum IgG4 for which steroid therapy is effective. Objectives. To confirm whether IgG4-related disease has distinctive chronic rhinosinusitis. Methods: We compared serum IgG4 levels as well as nasal computed tomography (CT) and clinicopathological findings before and after glucocorticoid treatment in 31 patients diagnosed as having IgG4-related disease with nasal manifestations. To evaluate immunohistochemical findings of nasal mucosa, we compared them with IgG4-related CRS and common CRS. Results: All patients had levels of high serum IgG4. Ten of the 31 patients had nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, postnasal discharge, hyposmia, and dull headache. They also demonstrated sinus lesions on radiological findings. After glucocorticoid treatment, serum IgG and IgG4 levels were markedly decreased and along with improvement of the symptoms, nasal sinus CT findings also revealed improvement of the sinus opacification. In immunohistochemical examination, the magnitude of IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration in common CRS was almost the same as in the IgG4-related CRS group. Therefore, in nasal mucosa immunocytochemical positive staining for IgG4 is not specific for definition of IgG4-related disease.ArticleACTA OTO-LARYNGOLOGICA. 131(5):518-526 (2011)journal articl

Continued growth of locally aggressive fibrous dysplasia of 22 years duration after reaching adulthood: a case report

    Get PDF
Fibrous dysplasia generally stops growing when patients reach adulthood. Locally aggressive fibrous dysplasia is an extremely rare subtype of fibrous dysplasia that is characterized by progressive enlargement after bone maturation, cortical bone destruction and soft tissue invasion but without malignant transformation. At 50 years of age, a tumor was found in the rib of a patient. The tumor gradually enlarged over time and imaging findings suggested a malignant tumor. The case was further complicated by restrictive lung disorder. Biopsies from multiple sites showed no malignant findings, and marginal resection with partial curettage was performed. The final diagnosis was locally aggressive fibrous dysplasia, and the restrictive lung disorder improved postoperatively. The natural history of the disease is also unknown. This is the first report in the literature to describe a case in which a lesion exhibited long-term growth over a period of 22 years after reaching adulthood.ArticleJournal of surgical case reports 2020(2) : rjz406(2020)journal articl

Phase II Trial of Biweekly Paclitaxel and Gemcitabine as Second-Line Chemotherapy for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Previously Treated with Platinum-Based Chemotherapy

    Get PDF
A phase II study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of biweekly administration of paclitaxel and gemcitabine in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who had been treated previously with platinum-based chemotherapy. Paclitaxel (150 mg/m2) and gemcitabine (1,000 mg/m2) were administered biweekly for at least 4 cycles. Thirty-one patients with a median age of 64 years (39-75 years) were enrolled in this study(stage IIIB/IV :11/20,PS 0/1/2:13/16/2).Partial response was observed in 7 cases (23%), and stable disease was seen in 18 cases (58%).Median survival time was 8.8 months with a one-year survival rate of 41.9 %.Hematological toxicities were mild and neutropenia of grade 3 or above was observed in one patient (3%). Non-hematological toxicities were also mild, including neurotoxicity (3%). Biweekly paclitaxel and gemcitabine combination chemotherapy was effective and tolerated well as second-line therapy against NSCLC.ArticleäżĄć·žćŒ»ćŠé›‘èȘŒ 59(6): 411-418(2011)departmental bulletin pape

Massive trapezial metastasis from gastric adenocarcinoma resected and reconstructed with a vascularized scapular bone graft: A case report

    Get PDF
Rationale: Isolated metastasis to the hand bones is very rare. Only seven cases of metastasis to the trapezium have been reported. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a single metastasis to the trapezium from a gastric adenocarcinoma. Patient concerns: A 62-year-old man presented with pain and massive swelling in the right carpometacarpal joint of the thumb. Diagnoses: The patient was diagnosed with trapezial metastasis of advanced gastric adenocarcinoma. Interventions: The patient underwent systemic chemotherapy with cisplatin and S-1, radiotherapy to the metastatic bone, and treatment with denosumab. One year later, the huge metastatic tumor was resected, and the hand was reconstructed using vascularized scapular bone. Outcomes: Eighteen months postoperatively, the patient was satisfied with the appearance of the reconstructed hand and was able to use his right thumb in activities of daily living. Lessons: Although rare, metastasis to the trapezium should be considered in patients with persistent and progressive thumb CMC joint pain.ArticleMedicine 96(50) : e9294(2017)journal articl
