We analyzed clinicopathologically patients with upper gingival carcinoma, especially those with cervical lymph node metastasis. This study included 35 patients who had undergone treatment for upper gingival carcinoma from 1975 to 2001. Clinically suspected node positive (N(+)) cases were appeared in 7 of the cases (20.0%). The TNM classification (UICC) was T4N1 and T4N2 in 3 each patients, with all patients classified as M0. Histopathologically confirmed node positive (pN(+)) cases appeared in 4 of 7 N(+) cases and 4 cases of secondary metastasis, for a total of 8 cases. A high prevalence of pN(+) cases were found among the endophytic, and 4C types. Regarding treatment modality, preoperative chemotherapy was administered to 30 of the cases. Chemotherapy was administered intra-venously in 8 cases and intra-arterially in 13 cases. Among patients treated intra-venously, there were no cases demonstrating neck metastasis ; however, among those treated intra-arterially, there was secondary metastasis in 3 cases. The 5-year cumulative survival rate was 81.3% overall and 62.5% among the pN(+) cases. Uncontrolled sites in pN(+) cases consisted of cervical lymph node metastasis in one case, and distant metastasis in another case

Effect of ruminal administration of soy sauce oil on rumen fermentation, milk production and blood parameters in dairy cows

Objective: To evaluate soy sauce oil (a by-product of making whole soybean soy sauce) as a new dietary lipid source, a large amount of soy sauce oil was administered into the rumen of dairy cows. Methods: Four Holstein dairy cows fitted with rumen cannulae were used in a 56-day experiment. Ruminal administration of soy sauce oil (1 kg/d) was carried out for 42 days from day 8 to day 49 to monitor nutritional, physiological and production responses. Results: Dry matter intake and milk yield were not affected by soy sauce oil administration, whereas 4% fat-corrected milk yield and the percentage of milk fat decreased. Although ruminal concentration of total volatile fatty acids (VFA) and the proportion of individual VFA were partially affected by administration of soy sauce oil, values were within normal ranges, showing no apparent inhibition in rumen fermentation. Administration of soy sauce oil decreased the proportions of milk fatty acids with a carbon chain length of less than 18, and increased the proportions of stearic, oleic, vaccenic and conjugated linoleic acids. Conjugated linoleic acid content in milk became 5.9 to 8.8 times higher with soy sauce oil administration. Blood serum concentrations of non-esterified fatty acid, 3-hydroxybutyric acid, total cholesterol, free cholesterol, esterified cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid increased with administration of soy sauce oil, suggesting a higher energy status of the experimental cows. Conclusion: The results suggest that soy sauce oil could be a useful supplement to potentially improve milk functionality without adverse effects on ruminal fermentation and animal health. More detailed analysis is necessary to optimize the supplementation level of this new lipid source in feeding trials

Expression of the cell-binding domain of human fibronectin in E. coli

AbstractTwo cDNA subfragments containing the cell-attachment site of human fibronectin (FN) were expressed as β-galactosidase fusion proteins in E. coli. The products were purified to homogeneity by monoclonal antibody affinity chromatography and assayed for activity in a standard cell-adhesion assay. A fusion protein containing an 80 kDa fragment of human FN appeared functionally equivalent to intact FN purified from human plasma, whereas a truncated fusion protein of 33 kDa still containing a previously postulated cell-attachment site was approx. 50-fold less active. Our study establishes a system for analyzing adhesive protein function by DNA manipulation, rules out any major role for eukaryotic post-translational modifications in FN adhesive function, and localizes additional functional activity to a 1.3 kb region
