    Synthesis of Highly Cis, Syndiotactic Polymers via Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization Using Ruthenium Metathesis Catalysts

    The first example of ruthenium-mediated ring-opening metathesis polymerization generating highly cis, highly tactic polymers is reported. While the cis content varied from 62 to >95% depending on the monomer structure, many of the polymers synthesized displayed high tacticity (>95%). Polymerization of an enantiomerically pure 2,3-dicarboalkoxynorbornadiene revealed a syndiotactic microstructure

Possible plus factors are typically enumerated without any attempt to distinguish them in terms of a meaningful economic categorization or in terms of their probative strength for inferring collusion. In this Article, we provide a taxonomy for plus factors as well as a methodology for ranking plus factors in terms of their strength for inferring explicit collusion, the strongest of which are referred to as super plus factors

    Cartels as Two-Stage Mechanisms: Implications for the Analysis of Dominant-Firm Conduct

    In this Article we propose that monopolization conduct be analyzed through the lens of cartel behavior. Although cartels typically suppress interfirm rivalry, in many instances this is not their sole focus. Many cartels operate as two-stage mechanisms. The first stage consists of reaching a consensus on a plan to restrict output or otherwise curb rivalry. For many cartels, once interfirm rivalry is addressed, the cartel moves to the second stage of activity, in which it uses exclusionary behavior often featured in monopolization cases to ensure the effectiveness of its efforts to restrict output. To illustrate this phenomenon, we draw upon the records of cartel inquiries to provide examples of cartels engaging in overt predation against non-cartel rivals, leveraging into both downstream and horizontally-related markets, exclusively dealing, blocking entry, bundling, tying, raising rivals\u27 costs, and other conduct typically associated with allegations of monopolization

    Highly Active Ruthenium Metathesis Catalysts Exhibiting Unprecedented Activity and Z‑Selectivity

    A novel chelated ruthenium-based metathesis catalyst bearing an N-2,6-diisopropylphenyl group is reported and displays near-perfect selectivity for the Z-olefin (>95%), as well as unparalleled TONs of up to 7400, in a variety of homodimerization and industrially relevant metathesis reactions. This derivative and other new catalytically active species were synthesized using an improved method employing sodium carboxylates to induce the salt metathesis and C–H activation of these chelated complexes. All of these new ruthenium-based catalysts are highly Z-selective in the homodimerization of terminal olefins

    Predictors and outcomes of crossover to surgery from physical therapy for meniscal tear and osteoarthritis a randomized trial comparing physical therapy and surgery

    BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) combined with physical therapy (PT) have yielded pain relief similar to that provided by PT alone in randomized trials of subjects with a degenerative meniscal tear. However, many patients randomized to PT received APM before assessment of the primary outcome. We sought to identify factors associated with crossing over to APM and to compare pain relief between patients who had crossed over to APM and those who had been randomized to APM. METHODS: We used data from the MeTeOR (Meniscal Tear in Osteoarthritis Research) Trial of APM with PT versus PT alone in subjects ≄45 years old who had mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis and a degenerative meniscal tear. We assessed independent predictors of crossover to APM among those randomized to PT. We also compared pain relief at 6 months among those randomized to PT who crossed over to APM, those who did not cross over, and those originally randomized to APM. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty-four subjects were randomized to and received APM and 177 were randomized to PT, of whom 48 (27%) crossed over to receive APM in the first 140 days after randomization. In multivariate analyses, factors associated with a higher likelihood of crossing over to APM among those who had originally been randomized to PT included a baseline Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) Pain Score of ≄40 (risk ratio [RR] = 1.99; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.00, 3.93) and symptom duration of <1 year (RR = 1.74; 95% CI = 0.98, 3.08). Eighty-one percent of subjects who crossed over to APM and 82% of those randomized to APM had an improvement of ≄10 points in their pain score at 6 months, as did 73% of those who were randomized to and received only PT. CONCLUSIONS: Subjects who crossed over to APM had presented with a shorter symptom duration and greater baseline pain than those who did not cross over from PT. Subjects who crossed over had rates of surgical success similar to those of the patients who had been randomized to surgery. Our findings also suggest that an initial course of rigorous PT prior to APM may not compromise surgical outcome. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prognostic Level II.     For common community phylogenetic analyses, go ahead and use synthesis phylogenies

    Should we build our own phylogenetic trees based on gene sequence data, or can we simply use available synthesis phylogenies? This is a fundamental question that any study involving a phylogenetic framework must face at the beginning of the project. Building a phylogeny from gene sequence data (purpose‐built phylogeny) requires more effort, expertise, and cost than subsetting an already available phylogeny (synthesis‐based phylogeny). However, we still lack a comparison of how these two approaches to building phylogenetic trees influence common community phylogenetic analyses such as comparing community phylogenetic diversity and estimating trait phylogenetic signal. Here, we generated three purpose‐built phylogenies and their corresponding synthesis‐based trees (two from Phylomatic and one from the Open Tree of Life, OTL). We simulated 1,000 communities and 12,000 continuous traits along each purpose‐built phylogeny. We then compared the effects of different trees on estimates of phylogenetic diversity (alpha and beta) and phylogenetic signal (Pagel’s λ and Blomberg’s K). Synthesis‐based phylogenies generally yielded higher estimates of phylogenetic diversity when compared to purpose‐built phylogenies. However, resulting measures of phylogenetic diversity from both types of phylogenies were highly correlated (Spearman’s ρ > 0.8 in most cases). Mean pairwise distance (both alpha and beta) is the index that is most robust to the differences in tree construction that we tested. Measures of phylogenetic diversity based on the OTL showed the highest correlation with measures based on the purpose‐built phylogenies. Trait phylogenetic signal estimated with synthesis‐based phylogenies, especially from the OTL, was also highly correlated with estimates of Blomberg’s K or close to Pagel’s λ from purpose‐built phylogenies when traits were simulated under Brownian motion.     Probing Unstable Massive Neutrinos with Current Cosmic Microwave Background Observations

    The pattern of anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background depends upon the masses and lifetimes of the three neutrino species. A neutrino species of mass greater than 10 eV with lifetime between 10^{13} sec and 10^{17} sec leaves a very distinct signature (due to the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect): the anisotropies at large angles are predicted to be comparable to those on degree scales. Present data exclude such a possibility and hence this region of parameter space. For mΜ≃30m_\nu \simeq 30 eV, τ≃1013\tau \simeq 10^{13} sec, we find an interesting possibility: the Integrated Sachs Wolfe peak produced by the decaying neutrino in low-Ω\Omega models mimics the acoustic peak expected in an Ω=1\Omega = 1 model.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
