Flight deck benefits of integrated data link communication

A fixed-base, piloted simulation study was conducted to determine the operational benefits that result when air traffic control (ATC) instructions are transmitted to the deck of a transport aircraft over a digital data link. The ATC instructions include altitude, airspeed, heading, radio frequency, and route assignment data. The interface between the flight deck and the data link was integrated with other subsystems of the airplane to facilitate data management. Data from the ATC instructions were distributed to the flight guidance and control system, the navigation system, and an automatically tuned communication radio. The co-pilot initiated the automation-assisted data distribution process. Digital communications and automated data distribution were compared with conventional voice radio communication and manual input of data into other subsystems of the simulated aircraft. Less time was required in the combined communication and data management process when data link ATC communication was integrated with the other subsystems. The test subjects, commercial airline pilots, provided favorable evaluations of both the digital communication and data management processes

Analyticity Constraints on Unequal-Mass Regge Formulas

A Regge-pole formula is derived for the elastic scattering of two unequal-mass particles that combines desirable l-plane analytic properties (i.e., a simple pole at l=α in the right-half l plane) and Mandelstam analyticity. It is verified that such a formula possesses the standard asymptotic Regge behavior u^(α(s)) even in regions where the cosine of the scattering angle of the relevant crossed reaction may be bounded. The simultaneous requirements of I-plane and Mandelstam analyticity enforce important constraints, and the consistency of these constraints is studied. These considerations lead to the appearance of a "background" term proportional asymptotically to u^(α(0)-1) which has no analog in the equal-mass problem. We also conclude that a necessary condition for consistency is α(∞)<0

Contamination effects of GPS Navstar solar array performance

The solar arrays on Navstars 1 to 6 have been limiting the electrical power capabilities in the extended life (beyond the 5 year design life). The departure from predicted performance consists of an extra 2.5 percent per year degradation beyond the radiation model estimates. This degradation is unusual in showing a linear rather than exponential decay with time. The performance of the arrays on these satellites has been examined in order to predict future behavior and to make refined projections on the Navstar 7 to 11 solar arrays. Evidence obtained from flight experiments on Navstar 5 and 6, and from laboratory experiments, suggests that contamination of the solar arrays while on orbit may be responsible. The evidence for photo-induced contamination of spacecraft surfaces is presented, and the effect on solar array output in the case of the GPS satellites is shown to be consistent with the observed anomalies
