Electron-Hole Asymmetry in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Probed by Direct Observation of Transverse Quasi-Dark Excitons
We studied the asymmetry between valence and conduction bands in
single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) through the direct observation of
spin-singlet transverse dark excitons using polarized photoluminescence
excitation spectroscopy. The intrinsic electron-hole (e-h) asymmetry lifts the
degeneracy of the transverse exciton wavefunctions at two equivalent K and K'
valleys in momentum space, which gives finite oscillator strength to transverse
dark exciton states. Chirality-dependent spectral weight transfer to transverse
dark states was clearly observed, indicating that the degree of the e-h
asymmetry depends on the specific nanotube structure. Based on comparison
between theoretical and experimental results, we evaluated the band asymmetry
parameters in graphene and various carbon nanotube structures.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

Incommensurate Matrix Product State for Quantum Spin Systems
We introduce a matrix product state (MPS) with an incommensurate periodicity
by applying the spin-rotation operator of each site to a uniform MPS in the
thermodynamic limit. The spin rotations decrease the variational energy with
accompanying translational symmetry breaking and the rotational symmetry
breaking in the spin space even if the Hamiltonian has the both symmetries. The
optimized pitch of rotational operator reflects the commensurate/incommensurate
properties of spin-spin correlation functions in the Heisenberg chain
and the ferro-antiferro zigzag chain.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Long-term survival after an aggressive surgical resection and chemotherapy for stage IV pulmonary giant cell carcinoma
BACKGROUND: Pulmonary giant cell carcinoma is one of the rare histological subtypes with pleomorphic, sarcomatoid or sarcomatous elements. The prognosis of patients with this tumor tends to be poor, because surgery, irradiation and chemotherapy are not usually effective. CASE PRESENTATION: We herein report a patient with pulmonary giant cell carcinoma with stage IV disease in whom aggressive multi-modality therapy resulted in a long-term survival. A 51-year-old male underwent an emergent operation with a partial resection of small intestinal metastases due to bleeding from the tumor. The patient also underwent a left pneumonectomy due to hemothorax as a result of the rapid growth of the primary tumor. Thereafter, two different regimens of chemotherapy and a partial resection for other site of small intestinal metastases and a splenectomy for splenic metastases were performed. The patient is presently doing well without any evidence of recurrence for 3 years after the initial operation. CONCLUSION: This is a first report of a rare case with stage IV pulmonary giant cell carcinoma who has survived long-term after undergoing aggressive surgical treatment and chemotherapy
Notes for EGEO 423 Pacific Rim : Sustainable Environment
The Japanese government has constructed facilities such as dams and nuclear power plants in the periphery for the purpose of supplying the core with energy and water in the process of modernization. This essay highlights the environmental issues in the periphery concerning waste, dams and nuclear power plants caused by the government’s ignorant policies in favor of the local people. The waste issues focus on the illegal dumping of industrial waste in Teshima and dioxins coming from the incinerators at Kunugiyama. The Nibutani Dam represents the dam issues. Lastly, the nuclear issues consist of referendums on nuclear facilities in Maki, Kariwa and Miyama, and the nuclear disaster in Tokaimura. It is concluded that the local people’s struggle for social justice and decentralization backed by others is a driving force for the government to improve its policies.特集 : 「環境調和型社会を指向して
