Rigid-plastic and elastic-plastic methods to obtain the safety factor in the slopes stability analysis
Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), Projecto I/D POCTI/ECM/2521/95

The yield curve and the macro-economy across time and frequencies
This paper assesses the relation between the yield curve and the main macroeconomic variables in the U.S. between early 1960s and 2009 across time and frequencies, using wavelet analyses. The shape of the yield curve is modelled by latent factors corresponding to its level, slope and curvature, estimated by maximum likelihood with the Kalman filter. The macroeconomic variables measure econmic activity, unemployment, inflation and the fed funds rate. The cross wavelet tools employed - coherency and phase difference - , the set of variables and the length of the sample, allow for a thorough appraisal of the time- variation and structural breaks in the direction, intensity, synchronization and periodicity of the relation between the yield curve and the macro-economy. Our evidence establishes a number of new stylized facts on the yield curve-macro relation; and sheds light on several results found in the literature, which could not have been achieved with analyses conducted strictly in the time-domain(as most of the literature)or purely in the frequency-domain.Macro-finance; Yield curve; Kalman filter; Continuous wavelet transform;Wavelet coherency;Phase-difference
Estimation of the rock deformation modulus and RMR based on data mining techniques
In this work Data Mining tools are used to develop new and innovative models for the estimation of the rock deformation modulus and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR). A database published by Chun et al. (2008) was used to develop these models. The parameters of the database were the depth, the weightings of the RMR system related to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the rock quality designation (RQD), the joint spacing (JS), the joint condition (JC), the groundwater condition (GWC) and the discontinuity orientation adjustment (DOA), the RMR and the deformation modulus. As a modelling tool the R program environment was used to apply these advanced techniques. Several algorithms were tested and analysed using different sets of input parameters. It was possible to develop new models to predict the rock deformation modulus and the RMR with improved accuracy and, additionally, allowed to have an insight of the importance of the different input parameters.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Slope stability evaluation. Performance of neural networks versus support vector machines
This work compares the performances of the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) with the Support Vector
Machines (SVM) in the slope stability evaluation. For this purpose a database containing the factors of
safety (FS) computed for 501 homogeneous slopes as well as their geometric and geotechnical
characteristics was generated. The factors of safety were obtained using the modified Bishop method and
the SLOPE/W software. The analyses were performed using the RMiner library in the R environment to
facilitate its use in classification and regression tasks. In the classification task the data were adjusted by
replacing the FS for “stable” when FS is greater or equal to 1 and “unstable” when FS is lower than 1.
Both ANN and SVM presented good performances in regression and classification tasks. Nevertheless, the
SVM had better performance in both tasks
The excavation of tunnels in rock masses is a complex task that requires its accurate
characterization. This characterization involves the determination of several characteristics,
mainly the rock strength and the rock mass fracturation. To evaluate these characteristics, tests
are performed and the orientation and joint spacing, as well as the filling material are surveyed.
In this work, to evaluate the strength of granitic rocks results of uniaxial compression test, point
load test and Schmidt hammer test were used. Correlations were established both between the
strength parameters and between these parameters and the modulus of elasticity. Good
correlations were obtained between the involved parameters
Analysis of damage building in the north region of Portugal
A damaged building in the North Region of Portugal is analysed.
Geotechnical characterisation of the soil foundation is presented. This soil has a low
bearing capacity and the water level is near the ground surface.
The reinforced concrete structural skeleton of this building consists of a mat foundation
and slabs joined by walls. The façades of the building are in air brick masonry.
Instrumental devices to measure the settlements of the building were installed. To
observe the behaviour of the developed cracks, a monitoring system was also applied.
The water table was observed with piezometers.
A tridimensional numerical linear-elastic analysis using a finite element computer
program considering soil-structure interaction is done. The soil is modelled using
springs distributed continuously and the values of the modulus of subgrade vertical
reaction are estimated from the geotechnical properties. The numerical results reveal the
deformations and the damages of the building. These results are compared with the field
observations.
A rehabilitation structural solution is analysed in order to decrease the differential
settlements and the soil pressure, and sustain the crack development.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - POCTI/ECM/59033/2004 “CUTINSHEAR - Performance assessment of an innovative structural FRP

The performance of ultrasonic pulse velocity on the prediction of tensile granite behaviour : a study based on artificial neural networks
The rehabilitation and repair of existing structures requires inspection. This generally includes in situ non-destructive testing. A very economical test is the non-destructive ultrasonic pulse velocity test (UPV). Lower information is available in the literature in relation to the use of this technique for the estimation of the tensile strength of materials. Therefore, this paper aims at using artificial neural networks (ANN) in the prediction of the mechanical behaviour of granites under tensile loading. The parameters under analysis are the tensile strength, displacement at peak stress and critical crack opening. For this, experimental results obtained from the physical and mechanical characterization under tension of distinct types of granites are combined and the performance of the developed models using the UPV index alone and combined with other physical parameters is analysed. The results of the ANNs models are also compared with respect to the results of regression models. The criteria used to evaluate the predictive performances of the models were the coefficient of correlation (R) and root mean square error (RMSE)
