    Get PDF
The MediClerk Training Program is a Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensed occupational education program established in 2002. It is designed to enable North Shore adults, who are facing the impacts of income inequality, to develop the skills and professional networks needed to secure entry-level employment in health care administration and support roles. MediClerk and Wellspring House seek adults’ advancement to positions that offer a living wage. Health care is a critical sector on the North Shore with ample career-track opportunities. Access to entry level positions that are tied to career ladders can lead to financial self-sufficiency for individuals and families, opportunities to grow professionally, comprehensive benefits and other supports needed to maintain economic stability. They also assist the students with outside resources that they need assistance which are the following: food assistance, homelessness, unstable housing, domestic violence support, referrals to mental health providers, and much more. The purpose of this internship was to identify a way to provide the students and staff with resources that they will have easy access to. This author created a Google website with the most requested resources with the support and supervision of the students and site supervisor

Life Coaching and Therapy: Possibilities in Dual Practice

    Get PDF
As life coaching grows in popularity, questions arise about its role in relation to therapy. Existing literature has explored theoretical similarities and differences between coaching and therapy and the potential benefits and drawbacks of separating and integrating the two. The current study sought to expand the limited base of literature on professionals\u27 real-life experience in dual practice. Qualitative and exploratory in nature, the study involved semi-structured interviews with seven dual practicing professionals. Findings include perceived financial and emotional benefits of practicing coaching and therapy, practitioners\u27 tendency to integrate rather than separate the two modalities, and participant concerns about the threat of untrained coaches, the hassles of health insurance, and unequal client access to services due to stigma and cost. Implications of this study include a need for educating the public on the realities of coaching and therapy, the potential adoption of more modern, less stigmatizing language to describe therapy and mental health, and changes to the healthcare system to promote proactive, accessible, and culturally-sensitive measures of early interventions to decrease the severity and costs associated with serious mental and physical health concerns that have become so common in our society

Homeless children and their struggle to succeed in their academics

Homeless children struggle to be successful in school because he or she encountered barriers such as anxiety, depression, and stress because of their family\u27s situation. Moreover, homeless children lack self-esteem, proper school supplies, and transportation for their academics success. Due to that cause, a majority of homeless children suffer grade retention including lower grades. It is difficult for homeless children to learn when he or she does not have a stable home. In addition, health problems affect learning for a school-age student. Likewise, living in a shelter home or welfare hotel can affect the child learning development because he or she does not have a comfortable environment. Finally, it is important to learn how to educate homeless children and the child special needs

Coming Together and Falling Apart: Producing and Contesting Place on the Atlanta Beltline

    Get PDF
In their efforts to revitalize and reimagine Atlanta, local government, private-public entities, and environmental organizations infuse green projects with the rhetoric of community engagement and local participation. The Atlanta Beltline, a circular greenway system of interconnected parks and trails that adaptably reuses abandoned rail lines surrounding the city, is Atlanta’s latest multi-scaled and controversial sustainability project. One of the Beltline’s primary goals is to act as a transformative force to create an equitable and unified city, which is evident in the Beltline’s promotional slogan, Where Atlanta Comes Together. Narratives of community engagement and decisions involved in constructing the Beltline’s built environment, however, advance processes of exclusion in salient ways under the illusion of equality that has hindered the Beltline’s initial intent of reconciling racial tensions and connect Atlantans. As one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S and city with the highest income inequality, Atlanta’s histories of racial segregation continue to haunt revitalized areas. These forces remain normalized and unchallenged, threatening to displace historically marginalized residents, erase existing narratives of place/ neighborhood identity, and exacerbate inequality. I will attempt to disentangle racialized histories, the power to erase/replace meanings of place, justifications of exclusion, and spaces of resistance that are hidden within urban sustainability’s rhetoric

Caminante, No Hay Puentes, Se Hacen Puentes Al Andar: The Autoethnographic Account of a Mexican American Scholar

The purpose of this autoethnography is to explore a young Latina’s educational pathways through a deep-rooted rewriting of the self as an illustration of experience to the greater literature. It contributes to the sociology of Latinxs by exploring my experiences as a Mexican American woman in a feminist reflexive. More specifically, it focuses on the personal, familial, and academic challenges Latinas face in their journey to higher education. In the ‘autobiographical genre of writing,’ is a study of culture that involves the self used to connect with the reader and allows my audience to share mi camino, my path. With this method, I draw both from ethno-cultural theories and from sociological literature. This is the voice of authority to my self, my personal experiences, voices, and emotions. I write this piece and embed my reflections and memories in it to shed light on some of the perspectives that affect the identity of Latinas and the self-perceptions we structure in academia. This piece is a contribution by bringing in the concept of familial intimate labor to help answer theoretical questions of academic success, assimilation to the academic culture, familial expectations, and self-perceptions In conclusion, this autoethnographic piece is a contribution to a dualistic form of feminist thought and reflexivity. I propose a way of looking at a young Latina’s educational path and the writing of the self in terms of experience and because of a desire for social integration. The awareness of a collective consciousness is just the beginning of a powerful answer to many of our pressing social issues, it is a way of showing how reality is constructed, how knowledge is produced, and how identities are created; it is a way of reading the world

Physical activity as a behavioral treatment in SHR rats: An animal model of ADHD

    Get PDF
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder defined by inattentive, hyperactive, and/or impulsive behaviors, typically treated with medications. Physical activity has been investigated as a treatment for children with ADHD and provides the ability for the individual to use it as a lifetime treatment option. Animal models can control for many of the issues posed by using human subjects. This study investigates whether physical activity in the form of wheel running reduces hyperactivity in an animal model of ADHD, the Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR), compared to its control, Wistar Kyoto rat (WKY). Using an ABAB design, hyperactivity was measured using an open field test and physical activity was measured by a running wheel. Results indicated wheel running had little effect on hyperactivity, however, findings proposed that hyperactivity increased with age in SHR rats. Results are discussed, limitations are recognized, and future research is suggested

The Use of Social Media for Marketing by Independent Musicians

    Get PDF
Many musicians have social media presences, but not many know how to begin or how to market their music. Instead, artists find themselves searching for other forms to help them market their music. This leads them to overspend on expensive services in hopes that they can get their names more known. Musicians may feel discouraged when they don’t see the results they hope for, especially online and with other competitors. Because of this, musicians feel less confident in their success in the music industry. There is an imbalance between what the musician wants to achieve and what they need. Through research of different marketing strategies, musicians can use tools and strategies to facilitate, monitor, and plan their content without needing a third party

    Histomonas ELISA

    Get PDF
Histomonas meleagridis is a protozoan parasite of avians and is the causative agent in Histomonosis, commonly known as Blackhead Disease. Current methods for diagnosing the presence of H. meleagridis are limited to parasite culture or Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify target DNA. This project aims to develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for faster and more sensitive diagnosis of Histomonas infections. Cultures of H. meleagridis parasites were purified, and surface antigens were extracted using a spectrum of chemical solutions. The various antigen solutions were subjected to an ELISA, with serum from birds immunized for H. meleagridis as positive controls. The ELISA was measured for absorbency differences between positive and negative control serum samples. Preliminary results indicate Propanol as a promising treatment; however conclusive data necessitates additional ELISA analysis. Histomonosis threatens the health of both wild and domestic bird populations. Control of this disease relies on quality management and diagnostic techniques. This ELISA will aid scientist, managers, and veterinarians in the study and eventual control of this disease, and also allow researchers the opportunity to understand the impact of Histomonas outbreaks and elucidate the attack rate of the parasite
