On gauged linear sigma models with torsion
We study a broad class of two dimensional gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs)
with off-shell N=(2,2) supersymmetry that flow to nonlinear sigma models
(NLSMs) on noncompact geometries with torsion. These models arise from coupling
chiral, twisted chiral, and semichiral multiplets to known as well as to a new
N=(2,2) vector multiplet, the constrained semichiral vector multiplet (CSVM).
We discuss three kinds of models, corresponding to torsionful deformations of
standard GLSMs realizing Kahler, hyperkahler, and Calabi-Yau manifolds. The
(2,2) supersymmetry guarantees that these spaces are generalized Kahler. Our
analysis of the geometric structure is performed at the classical level, but we
also discuss quantum aspects such as R-symmetry anomalies. We provide an
explicit example of a generalized Kahler structure on the conifold.Comment: 39 pages, 1 figure. v2: References adde
Verbal Communication Skills Requirements for Information Systems Professionals
The role of information systems (IS) professionals in organizations has changed through the years, from one who works mostly with technically oriented peers, to one who spends a significant amount of time interacting with people who are involved in the functional areas of the organization. In many organizations, IS professionals are assigned permanently to the user area and they are expected to not only be technically competent, but also be competent in the user\u27s area. This move of IS professionals to the functional areas necessitates that they communicate more with the functional users whose IS needs they are fulfilling. The users, on the other hand, are also required to interact and communicate more with the IS people. With the move toward distributed IS, users are becoming more involved in the specification, design and sometimes even construction of their own systems. It is therefore imperative that analysts and users be able to communicate with each other unequivocally, so that the systems are specified and developed properly. This research investigated the verbal communication skills requirements for IS practicing professionals and new university graduates. A survey was used for data collection. It was sent to IS professionals in several large organizations, that represented the industry in general. A nearly perfect response rate was achieved. The findings are useful for both IS professionals and university programs. Organizations can use the findings to identify areas of weaknesses in the skills of their IS personnel and eliminate them with continuing education. Universities can use the findings to identify skills that they may not be currently emphasizing in their curricula and make necessary adjustments
T35: a small automatic telescope for long-term observing campaigns
The T35 is a small telescope (14") equipped with a large format CCD camera
installed in the Sierra Nevada Observatory (SNO) in Southern Spain. This
telescope will be a useful tool for the detecting and studying pulsating stars,
particularly, in open clusters. In this paper, we describe the automation
process of the T35 and show also some images taken with the new
instrumentation.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in the special issue

Cold-spray of aluminium with and without ceramic combined with plasma electrolytic oxidation
Cold spraying is developing rapidly and has a wide spectrum of applications: protection against corrosion, preparation of high conductivity coatings, repair of damaged metal components, metal additive manufacturing, thermal management. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is widely used to improve the corrosion and wear resistance of lightweight metals such as aluminum alloys by the formation of a ceramic oxide layer. When applied on aluminium alloys, the PEO oxide layer is mainly composed with γ-Al2O3 (in major proportion) and corundum, α-Al2O3. Increasing the proportion of corundum is an objective in order to improve the corrosion and wear resistance properties. For this purpose, a duplex treatment combining cold spray and PEO is investigate [1]. Particularly it consists in firstly cold spraying an aluminium coating containing a certain amount of α-Al2O3 which is then PEO processed. Our results show that, while the projected alpha alumina particles are observable on cross sections of untreated samples and for short PEO treatment times (lower than 20 min), this is no longer the case for long PEO treatment times (over than 35 min) (see the figure). In fact, under these conditions, it is no longer possible to observe the alpha alumina particles in the PEO layer. More interesting still, the proportion of alpha alumina in the layers resulting from a duplex treatment is greater than that obtained in the layer resulting from a cold spray treatment by scanning electron microscope
Social comparison processes and catastrophising in fibromyalgia:A path analysis
Introduction: In addition to coping strategies, social comparison may play a role in illness adjustment. However, little is known about the role of contrast and identification in social comparison in adaptation to fibromyalgia.Aim: To evaluate through a path analysis in a sample of fibromyalgia patients, the association between identification and contrast in social comparison, catastrophising and specific health outcomes (fibromyalgia illness impact and psychological distress).Material and Method: 131 Spanish fibromyalgia outpatients (mean age: 50.15, SD=11.1) filled out a questionnaire. Results: We present a model that explained 33% of the variance in catastrophising by direct effects of more use of upward contrast and downward identification. In addition, 35% of fibromyalgia illness impact variance was explained by less upward identification, more upward contrast and more catastrophising and 42% of the variance in psychological distress by a direct effect of more use of upward contrast together with higher fibromyalgia illness impact.Discussion: We suggest that intervention programmes with chronic pain and fibromyalgia patients should focus on enhancing the use of upward identification in social comparison, and on minimising the use of upward contrast and downward identification in social comparison
Persistence in higher dimensions : a finite size scaling study
We show that the persistence probability , in a coarsening system of
linear size at a time , has the finite size scaling form where is the persistence exponent and
is the coarsening exponent. The scaling function for
and is constant for large . The scaling form implies a fractal
distribution of persistent sites with power-law spatial correlations. We study
the scaling numerically for Glauber-Ising model at dimension to 4 and
extend the study to the diffusion problem. Our finite size scaling ansatz is
satisfied in all these cases providing a good estimate of the exponent

Generalized persistence exponents: an exactly soluble model
It was recently realized that the persistence exponent appearing in the
dynamics of nonequilibrium systems is a special member of a continuously
varying family of exponents, describing generalized persistence properties. We
propose and solve a simplified model of coarsening, where time intervals
between spin flips are independent, and distributed according to a L\'evy law.
Both the limit distribution of the mean magnetization and the generalized
persistence exponents are obtained exactly.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures Submitted to PR
Series Expansion Calculation of Persistence Exponents
We consider an arbitrary Gaussian Stationary Process X(T) with known
correlator C(T), sampled at discrete times T_n = n \Delta T. The probability
that (n+1) consecutive values of X have the same sign decays as P_n \sim
\exp(-\theta_D T_n). We calculate the discrete persistence exponent \theta_D as
a series expansion in the correlator C(\Delta T) up to 14th order, and
extrapolate to \Delta T = 0 using constrained Pad\'e approximants to obtain the
continuum persistence exponent \theta. For the diffusion equation our results
are in exceptionally good agreement with recent numerical estimates.Comment: 5 pages; 5 page appendix containing series coefficient
