The Bestest Little Higgs
While little Higgs models provide an interesting way to address the hierarchy
problem, concrete models in the literature typically face two major obstacles.
First, the mechanism for generating a Higgs quartic coupling often leads to
large violations of custodial symmetry. Second, there is a tension between
precision electroweak observables in the gauge sector and fine-tuning in the
top sector. In this work, we present a new little Higgs model which solves both
of these problems. The model is based on an SO(6)xSO(6)/SO(6) coset space which
has custodial symmetry built in. The Higgs quartic coupling takes a
particularly simple form and does not suffer from the "dangerous singlet"
pathology. We introduce a gauge breaking module which decouples the mass of
gauge partners from the mass of top partners, allowing for natural electroweak
symmetry breaking. The collider phenomenology is dominated by production and
decay of the top partners, which are considerably lighter than in traditional
little Higgs theories.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figure
Collective Quartics and Dangerous Singlets in Little Higgs
Any extension of the standard model that aims to describe TeV-scale physics
without fine-tuning must have a radiatively-stable Higgs potential. In little
Higgs theories, radiative stability is achieved through so-called collective
symmetry breaking. In this letter, we focus on the necessary conditions for a
little Higgs to have a collective Higgs quartic coupling. In one-Higgs doublet
models, a collective quartic requires an electroweak triplet scalar. In
two-Higgs doublet models, a collective quartic requires a triplet or singlet
scalar. As a corollary of this study, we show that some little Higgs theories
have dangerous singlets, a pathology where collective symmetry breaking does
not suppress quadratically-divergent corrections to the Higgs mass.Comment: 4 pages; v2: clarified the existing literature; v3: version to appear

How realistic are solar model atmospheres?
Recently, new solar model atmospheres have been developed to replace
classical 1D LTE hydrostatic models and used to for example derive the solar
chemical composition. We aim to test various models against key observational
constraints. In particular, a 3D model used to derive the solar abundances, a
3D MHD model (with an imposed 10 mT vertical magnetic field), 1D models from
the PHOENIX project, the 1D MARCS model, and the 1D semi-empirical model of
Holweger & M\"uller. We confront the models with observational diagnostics of
the temperature profile: continuum centre-to-limb variations (CLV), absolute
continuum fluxes, and the wings of hydrogen lines. We also test the 3D models
for the intensity distribution of the granulation and spectral line shapes. The
predictions from the 3D model are in excellent agreement with the continuum CLV
observations, performing even better than the Holweger & M\"uller model
(constructed largely to fulfil such observations). The predictions of the 1D
theoretical models are worse, given their steeper temperature gradients. For
the continuum fluxes, predictions for most models agree well with the
observations. No model fits all hydrogen lines perfectly, but again the 3D
model comes ahead. The 3D model also reproduces the observed continuum
intensity fluctuations and spectral line shapes very well. The excellent
agreement of the 3D model with the observables reinforces the view that its
temperature structure is realistic. It outperforms the MHD simulation in all
diagnostics, implying that recent claims for revised abundances based on MHD
modelling are premature. Several weaknesses in the 1D models are exposed. The
differences between the PHOENIX LTE and NLTE models are small. We conclude that
the 3D hydrodynamical model is superior to any of the tested 1D models, which
gives further confidence in the solar abundance analyses based on it.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures. Accepted for publication in A&

An in vivo evaluation of Brilliant Blue G in animals and humans
Background/Aims: To evaluate the retinal toxicity of Brilliant Blue G (BBG) following intravitreal injection in rat eyes and examine the biocompatibility and the staining properties in humans. Methods: BBG was injected into the 11 rat eyes to evaluate toxic effects with balanced salt solution (BSS) serving as control. Retinal toxicity was assessed by retinal ganglion cell (RGC) counts and by light microscopy 7 days later. In addition, BBG was applied during vitrectomy for macular hole (MH) (n = 15) or epiretinal membranes (ERM) (n = 3) in a prospective, non-comparative consecutive series of patients. Before and after surgery, all patients underwent a complete clinical examination including measurement of best corrected visual acuity (VA) and intraocular pressure, perimetry, fundus photography and optical coherence tomography. Patients were seen 1 day before surgery and then in approximately four weeks intervals. Results: No significant reduction in RGC numbers and no morphological alterations were noted. A sufficient staining of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) was seen in patients with MH, while the staining pattern in ERM cases was patchy, indicating that parts of the ILM were peeled off along with the ERM in a variable extent. All MHs could be closed successfully. VA improved in 10 eyes (56%; 8/15 MH patients, 2/3 ERM patients), was unchanged in four eyes (22%; all MH patients) and was reduced in four eyes (22%; 3/15 MH, 1/3 ERM). No toxic effects attributable to the dye were noted during patient follow-up. The ultrastructure of tissue harvested during surgery was unremarkable. Conclusion: Brilliant Blue provides a sufficient and selective staining of the ILM. No retinal toxicity or adverse effects related to the dye were observed in animal and human studies. The long-term safety of this novel dye will have to be evaluated in larger patient series and a longer follow-up
CaRe-CNN: Cascading Refinement CNN for Myocardial Infarct Segmentation with Microvascular Obstructions
Late gadolinium enhanced (LGE) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is widely
established to assess the viability of myocardial tissue of patients after
acute myocardial infarction (MI). We propose the Cascading Refinement CNN
(CaRe-CNN), which is a fully 3D, end-to-end trained, 3-stage CNN cascade that
exploits the hierarchical structure of such labeled cardiac data. Throughout
the three stages of the cascade, the label definition changes and CaRe-CNN
learns to gradually refine its intermediate predictions accordingly.
Furthermore, to obtain more consistent qualitative predictions, we propose a
series of post-processing steps that take anatomical constraints into account.
Our CaRe-CNN was submitted to the FIMH 2023 MYOSAIQ challenge, where it ranked
second out of 18 participating teams. CaRe-CNN showed great improvements most
notably when segmenting the difficult but clinically most relevant myocardial
infarct tissue (MIT) as well as microvascular obstructions (MVO). When
computing the average scores over all labels, our method obtained the best
score in eight out of ten metrics. Thus, accurate cardiac segmentation after
acute MI via our CaRe-CNN allows generating patient-specific models of the
heart serving as an important step towards personalized medicine.Comment: Accepted at VISIGRAPP 2024, 12 page
