    High Redshift Quasars

    The report for this period includes three papers: 'Associated Absorption at Low and High Redshift'; 'Strong X-ray Absorption in a Broad Absorption Line Quasar: PHL5200'; and 'ASCA and ROSAT X-ray Spectra of High-Redshift Radio-Loud Quasars'. The first gives examples from both low and high redshift for combining information on absorbing material in active galactic nuclei from both x-ray and the UV. The second presents ASCA observations of the z = 1.98 prototype broad absorption line quasar (BALQSO): PHL 5200, detected with both the solid-state imaging spectrometers and the gas imaging spectometers. The third paper presents results on the x-ray properties of 9 high-redshift radio-loud quasars observed by ASCA and ROSAT, including ASCA observations of S5 0014+81 (z = 3.38) and S5 0836+71 (z = 2.17) and ROSAT observations of PKS 2126-158

    The status of identifications of the Einstien Slew Survey, a bright soft x-ray catalog with 550 new x-ray sources, is discussed. Possible counterparts were found for greater than 95 percent of the Slew Survey based on positional coincidences and color-color diagnostics. The survey will be fully identified via upcoming radio and optical observations

    The Equilibrium Photoionized Absorber in 3C351

    We present two ROSAT PSPC observations of the radio-loud, lobe-dominated quasar 3C 351, which shows an `ionized absorber' in its X-ray spectrum. The factor 1.7 change in flux in the \sim2~years between the observations allows a test of models for this ionized absorber. The absorption feature at ~0.7 keV (quasar frame) is present in both spectra but with a lower optical depth when the source intensity - and hence the ionizing flux at the absorber - is higher, in accordance with a simple, single-zone, equilibrium photoionization model. Detailed modeling confirms this agrement quantitatively. The maximum response time of 2 years allows us to limit the gas density: n_e > 2 x 10^4 cm^{-3}; and the distance of the ionized gas from the central source R < 19 pc. This produces a strong test for a photoionized absorber in 3C~351: a factor 2 flux change in ~1 week in this source must show non-equilibrium effects in the ionized absorber.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Ap

    The Near-Infrared Broad Emission Line Region of Active Galactic Nuclei -- I. The Observations

    We present high quality (high signal-to-noise ratio and moderate spectral resolution) near-infrared (near-IR) spectroscopic observations of 23 well-known broad-emission line active galactic nuclei (AGN). Additionally, we obtained simultaneous (within two months) optical spectroscopy of similar quality. The near-IR broad emission line spectrum of AGN is dominated by permitted transitions of hydrogen, helium, oxygen, and calcium, and by the rich spectrum of singly-ionized iron. In this paper we present the spectra, line identifications and measurements, and address briefly some of the important issues regarding the physics of AGN broad emission line regions. In particular, we investigate the excitation mechanism of neutral oxygen and confront for the first time theoretical predictions of the near-IR iron emission spectrum with observations.Comment: 45 pages, 17 figures, accepted by ApJ

    Optimization-based interactive segmentation interface for multiregion problems.

    Interactive segmentation is becoming of increasing interest to the medical imaging community in that it combines the positive aspects of both manual and automated segmentation. However, general-purpose tools have been lacking in terms of segmenting multiple regions simultaneously with a high degree of coupling between groups of labels. Hierarchical max-flow segmentation has taken advantage of this coupling for individual applications, but until recently, these algorithms were constrained to a particular hierarchy and could not be considered general-purpose. In a generalized form, the hierarchy for any given segmentation problem is specified in run-time, allowing different hierarchies to be quickly explored. We present an interactive segmentation interface, which uses generalized hierarchical max-flow for optimization-based multiregion segmentation guided by user-defined seeds. Applications in cardiac and neonatal brain segmentation are given as example applications of its generality

    The Far-infrared Continuum of Quasars

    ISO provides a key new far-infrared window through which to observe the multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGN). It allows us, for the first time, to observe a substantial fraction of the quasar population in the far-IR, and to obtain simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations from 5--200 microns. With these data we can study the behavior of the IR continuum in comparison with expectations from competing thermal and non-thermal models. A key to determining which mechanism dominates, is the measurement of the peak wavelength of the emission and the shape of the far-IR--mm turnover. Turnovers which are steeper than frequency^2.5 indicate thermal dust emission in the far-IR. Preliminary results from our ISO data show broad, fairly smooth, IR continuum emission with far-IR turnovers generally too steep to be explained by non-thermal synchrotron emission. Assuming thermal emission throughout leads to a wide inferred temperature range of 50-1000 K. The hotter material, often called the AGN component, probably originates in dust close to and heated by the central source, e.g. the ubiquitous molecular torus. The cooler emission is too strong to be due purely to cool, host galaxy dust, and so indicates either the presence of a starburst in addition to the AGN or AGN-heated dust covering a wider range of temperatures than present in the standard, optically thick torus models.Comment: 4 pages, to be published in the proceedings of "The Universe as Seen by ISO," ed.     Chandra Detection of X-ray Absorption Associated with a Damped Lyman Alpha System

    We have observed three quasars, PKS 1127-145, Q 1331+171 and Q0054+144, with the ACIS-S aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, in order to measure soft X-ray absorption associated with intervening 21-cm and damped Lyα\alpha absorbers. For PKS 1127-145, we detect absorption which, if associated with an intervening z_{abs}=0.312 absorber, implies a metallicity of 23% solar. If the absorption is not at z_{abs}=0.312, then the metallicity is still constrained to be less than 23% solar. The advantage of the X-ray measurement is that the derived metallicity is insensitive to ionization, inclusion of an atom in a molecule, or depletion onto grains. The X-ray absorption is mostly due to oxygen, and is consistent with the oxygen abundance of 30% solar derived from optical nebular emission lines in a foreground galaxy at the redshift of the absorber. For Q1331+171 and Q 0054+144, only upper limits were obtained, although the exposure times were intentionally short, since for these two objects we were interested primarily in measuring flux levels to plan for future observations.     Thirteen new BL Lacertae objects discovered by an efficient x ray/radio/optical technique

    The discovery of 13 serendipitous BL Lac objects in the Einstein IPC Slew Survey by means of x ray/radio vs. x ray/optical color-color diagrams and confirmation by optical spectroscopy are reported. These 13 BL Lacs were discovered using a technique which exploits the characteristic broad band spectra of BL Lacs. New VLA detections provide accurate fluxes (f(6 cm) is approximately 0.5 mJy) and 2 in. positions, facilitating the determination of an optical counterpart. All 13 new BL Lacs show essentially featureless optical spectra. Nine of these lie within the range of colors of known x ray selected BL Lacs. Of the remaining four, one is apparently x ray louder (by a factor of 1.5) or optically quieter (by 0.8 mags); and three are optically louder (by 1-1.3 mags) than x ray selected BL Lacs. Approximately 50 new BL Lacs in total are expected from VLA work and upcoming Australia Telescope observations, yielding a complete Slew Survey sample of approximately 90 BL Lacs
