    Relationships between nitric oxide, nitroxyl ion, nitrosonium cation and peroxynitrite

    AbstractThis review is concerned mainly with the three redox-related, but chemically distinct, species NO−, NO⋅ and NO+, with greatest emphasis being placed on the chemistry and biology of the nitroxyl ion. Biochemical routes for the formation of nitroxyl ion and methods for showing the intermediacy of this species are discussed, together with chemical methods for generating nitroxyl ion in solution. Reactions of nitroxyl ion with NO⋅, thiols, iron centres in haem and with dioxygen are reviewed The significance of the reaction between NO− and dioxygen as a source of peroxynitrite is assessed, and attention drawn to the possible significance of the spin state of the nitroxyl ion in this context. The biological significance of nitrosation and the importance of S-nitrosothiols and certain metal nitrosyl complexes as carriers of NO+ at physiological pH is stressed.     Consistency of Wilsonian effective actions

    Wilsonian effective actions are interpreted as free energies in ensembles with prescribed field expectation values and prescribed connected two-point functions. Since such free energies are directly obtained from two-particle-irreducible functionals, it follows that Wilsonian effective actions satisfy elementary perturbative consistency conditions, and non-perturbative convexity conditions. In particular, the exact determination of a Wilsonian action by other means (e.g. supersymmetry) allows one to extract restrictions on the particular cutoff scheme and field reparametrization that would lead to such a Wilsonian action from an underlying microscopic action.Comment: 3 pages, RevTe

    AbstractThe absorbance maximum (630 nm) of reduced cytochrome d in Escherichia coli membrane particles was diminished by 160 μM AgNO3 or NaNO3 and accompanied by the formation of a species with an absorption maximum at 640–645 nm. Nitrite, trioxodinitrate and nitric oxide elicited qualitatively similar, but faster, changes in the spectrum of cytochrome d, suggesting that formation of a nitrosyl complex may be involved in all cases.     Atomic Carbon in M82: Physical conditions derived from simultaneous observations of the [CI] fine structure submillimeter wave transitions

    We report the first extragalactic detection of the neutral carbon [CI] 3P2-3P1 fine structure line at 809 GHz. The line was observed towards M82 simultaneously with the 3P1-3P0 line at 492 GHz, providing a precise measurement of the J=2-1/J=1-0 integrated line ratio of 0.96 (on a [K km s^-1] -scale). This ratio constrains the [CI] emitting gas to have a temperature of at least 50 K and a density of at least 10^4 cm^-3. Already at this minimum temperature and density, the beam averaged CI-column density is large, 2.1 10^18 cm^-2, confirming the high CI/CO abundance ratio of approximately 0.5 estimated earlier from the 492 GHz line alone.     Warm Molecular Hydrogen in the Galactic Wind of M82

    We report the detection of a complex of extraplanar warm H_2 knots and filaments extending more than ~3 kpc above and below the galactic plane of M82, roughly coincident with the well-known galactic wind in this system. Comparisons of these data with published results at other wavelengths provide quantitative constraints on the topology, excitation, heating, and stability against disruption of the wind-entrained molecular ISM in this prototypical galactic wind. Deep H_2 2.12 um observations such as these represent a promising new method to study the elusive but potentially important molecular component of galactic winds.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.     Maximizing the impact of malaria funding through allocative efficiency: using the right interventions in the right locations.

    BACKGROUND: The high burden of malaria and limited funding means there is a necessity to maximize the allocative efficiency of malaria control programmes. Quantitative tools are urgently needed to guide budget allocation decisions. METHODS: A geospatial epidemic model was coupled with costing data and an optimization algorithm to estimate the optimal allocation of budgeted and projected funds across all malaria intervention approaches. Interventions included long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs), indoor residual spraying (IRS), intermittent presumptive treatment during pregnancy (IPTp), seasonal mass chemoprevention in children (SMC), larval source management (LSM), mass drug administration (MDA), and behavioural change communication (BCC). The model was applied to six geopolitical regions of Nigeria in isolation and also the nation as a whole to minimize incidence and malaria-attributable mortality. RESULTS: Allocative efficiency gains could avert approximately 84,000 deaths or 15.7 million cases of malaria in Nigeria over 5 years. With an additional US$300 million available, approximately 134,000 deaths or 37.3 million cases of malaria could be prevented over 5 years. Priority funding should go to LLINs, IPTp and BCC programmes, and SMC should be expanded in seasonal areas. To minimize mortality, treatment expansion is critical and prioritized over some LLIN funding, while to minimize incidence, LLIN funding remained a priority. For areas with lower rainfall, LSM is prioritized over IRS but MDA is not recommended unless all other programmes are established. CONCLUSIONS: Substantial reductions in malaria morbidity and mortality can be made by optimal targeting of investments to the right malaria interventions in the right areas

    Onset of small-amplitude oscillatory and both small- and finite-amplitude steady double-component convection arising due to component different boundary conditions in an infinite slot is studied for various slot orientations to the gravity. The main focus is on two compensating background gradients of the components.     No Far-Infrared-Spectroscopic Gap in Clean and Dirty High-TC_C Superconductors

    We report far infrared transmission measurements on single crystal samples derived from Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8}. The impurity scattering rate of the samples was varied by electron-beam irradiation, 50MeV 16^{16}O+6^{+6} ion irradiation, heat treatment in vacuum, and Y doping. Although substantial changes in the infrared spectra were produced, in no case was a feature observed that could be associated with the superconducting energy gap. These results all but rule out ``clean limit'' explanations for the absence of the spectroscopic gap in this material, and provide evidence that the superconductivity in Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8} is gapless.Comment: 4 pages and 3 postscript figures attached.
