Data management of on-line partial discharge monitoring using wireless sensor nodes integrated with a multi-agent system
On-line partial discharge monitoring has been the subject of significant research in previous years but little work has been carried out with regard to the management of on-site data. To date, on-line partial discharge monitoring within a substation has only been concerned with single plant items, so the data management problem has been minimal. As the age of plant equipment increases, so does the need for condition monitoring to ensure maximum lifespan. This paper presents an approach to the management of partial discharge data through the use of embedded monitoring techniques running on wireless sensor nodes. This method is illustrated by a case study on partial discharge monitoring data from an ageing HVDC reactor
High-pT Signatures in Vector-Leptoquark Models
We present a detailed analysis of the collider signatures of TeV-scale
massive vector bosons motivated by the hints of lepton flavour non-universality
observed in -meson decays. We analyse three representations that necessarily
appear together in a large class of ultraviolet-complete models: a
colour-singlet (), a colour-triplet (the leptoquark), and a colour
octet (). Under general assumptions for the interactions of these exotic
states with Standard Model fields, including in particular possible
right-handed and flavour off-diagonal couplings for the , we derive a
series of stringent bounds on masses and couplings that constrain a wide range

Changes in Teachers’ Adaptive Expertise in an Engineering Professional Development Course
Although the consensus seems to be that high-school-level introductory engineering courses should focus on design, this creates a problem for teacher training. Traditionally, math and science teachers are trained to teach and assess factual knowledge and closed-ended problemsolving techniques specific to a particular discipline, which is unsuited for teaching design skills for open-ended problems that may involve multiple engineering disciplines. Instead, engineering teacher training should use the more fluid framework of adaptive expertise which values the ability to apply knowledge in innovative ways as well as recall facts and solve problems using conventional techniques. In this study, we examined a 6-week program to train math/science teachers to teach high school design engineering. For each curriculum unit, we had a pre-posttest to assess the teachers’ factual knowledge and ability to solve typical problems (termed ‘‘efficiency’’) and their ability to apply their knowledge to reason through open-ended problems (termed ‘‘innovation’’). In addition, we conducted a pre-posttest to see whether teachers’ attitudes and beliefs related to adaptive expertise changed over the course of the program
The Nuclear Reddening Curve for Active Galactic Nuclei and the Shape of the Infra-Red to X-Ray Spectral Energy Distribution
We present extinction curves derived from the broad emission lines and
continua of large samples of both radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs. The curves
are significantly flatter in the UV than are curves for the local ISM. The
reddening curves for the radio-quiet LBQS quasars are slightly steeper than
those of the radio-loud quasars in the UV, probably because of additional
reddening by dust further out in the host galaxies of the former. The UV
extinction curves for the radio-loud AGNs are very flat. This is explicable
with slight modifications to standard MRN dust models: there is a relative lack
of small grains in the nuclear dust. Our continuum and broad-emission line
reddening curves agree in both shape and amplitude, confirming that the
continuum shape is indeed profoundly affected by reddening for all but the
bluest AGNs. With correction by our generic extinction curve, all of the
radio-loud AGNs have continuous optical-UV spectra consistent with a single
shape. We show that radio-quiet AGNs have very similar intrinsic UV to optical
shape over orders of magnitude in luminosity. We also argue that radio-loud and
radio-quiet AGNs probably share the same underlying continuum shape and that
most of the systematic differences between their observed continuum shapes are
due to higher nuclear reddening in radio-selected AGNs, and additional
reddening from dust further out in the host galaxies in radio-quiet AGNs. Our
conclusions have important implications for the modelling of quasar continua

An open-label trial of tomoxetine in pediatric attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
OBJECTIVE: To collect pilot data assessing the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of tomoxetine, a nonstimulant norepinephrine enhancer, in pediatric attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
METHODS: An open-label trial of tomoxetine in pediatric ADHD was conducted as part of a multisite clinical trial. Following a baseline assessment, an ascending dose titration was completed during 10 weekly visits.
RESULTS: Ten subjects were enrolled at baseline, with eight completing the study. Seven of the eight remaining subjects met efficacy criteria. Significant decreases in symptom severity ratings by parents and study investigators were found. The medication was well tolerated, with transient appetite suppression the most frequently reported side effect. However, subjects\u27 weights remained stable across study visits.
DISCUSSION: These preliminary findings suggest that tomoxetine may hold promise as a treatment for pediatric ADHD
