    Investigating the medium range order in amorphous Ta<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> coatings

    Ion-beam sputtered amorphous heavy metal oxides, such as Ta2O5, are widely used as the high refractive index layer of highly reflective dielectric coatings. Such coatings are used in the ground based Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), in which mechanical loss, directly related to Brownian thermal noise, from the coatings forms an important limit to the sensitivity of the LIGO detector. It has previously been shown that heat-treatment and TiO2 doping of amorphous Ta2O5 coatings causes significant changes to the levels of mechanical loss measured and is thought to result from changes in the atomic structure. This work aims to find ways to reduce the levels of mechanical loss in the coatings by understanding the atomic structure properties that are responsible for it, and thus helping to increase the LIGO detector sensitivity. Using a combination of Reduced Density Functions (RDFs) from electron diffraction and Fluctuation Electron Microscopy (FEM), we probe the medium range order (in the 2-3 nm range) of these amorphous coatings

    Studies of a Lacustrine-Volcanic Mars Analog Field Site with Mars-2020-like Instruments

    On the upcoming Mars‐2020 rover two remote sensing instruments, Mastcam‐Z and SuperCam, and two microscopic proximity science instruments, SHERLOC and PIXL, will collect compositional (mineralogy, chemistry, and organics) data essential for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. The synergies between and limitations of these instruments were evaluated via study of a Mars analog field site in the Mojave Desert, using instruments approximating the data that will be returned by Mars‐2020. A ground truth dataset was generated for comparison to validate the results. The site consists of a succession of clay‐rich mudstones of lacustrine origin, interbedded tuffs, a carbonate‐silica travertine deposit, and gypsiferous mudstone strata. The major geological units were mapped successfully using simulated Mars‐2020 data. Simulated Mastcam‐Z data identified unit boundaries and Fe‐bearing weathering products. Simulated SuperCam passive shortwave infrared and green Raman data were essential in identifying major mineralogical composition and changes in lacustrine facies at distance; this was possible even with spectrally downsampled passive IR data. LIBS and simulated PIXL data discriminated and mapped major element chemistry. Simulated PIXL revealed mm‐scale zones enriched in zirconium, of interest for age dating. SHERLOC‐like data mapped sulfate and carbonate at sub‐mm scale; silicates were identified with increased laser pulses/spot or by averaging of hundreds of spectra. Fluorescence scans detected and mapped varied classes of organics in all samples, characterized further with follow‐on spatially targeted deep‐UV Raman spectra. Development of dedicated organics spectral libraries is needed to aid interpretation. Given these observations, the important units in the outcrop would be sampled and cached for sample return

    Dispersion of Magnetic Fields in Molecular Clouds. IV - Analysis of Interferometry Data

    We expand on the dispersion analysis of polarimetry maps toward applications to interferometry data. We show how the filtering of low spatial frequencies can be accounted for within the idealized Gaussian turbulence model, initially introduced for single-dish data analysis, to recover reliable estimates for correlation lengths of magnetized turbulence, as well as magnetic field strengths (plane-of-the-sky component) using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method. We apply our updated technique to TADPOL/CARMA data obtained on W3(OH), W3 Main, and DR21(OH). For W3(OH), our analysis yields a turbulence correlation length δ ≃ 19 mpc, a ratio of turbulent-to-total magnetic energy 〈B〉_^2_t/〈B^2〉 ≃ 0.58, and a magnetic field strength B_0 ~ 1.1 mG for W3 Main δ ≃ 22mpc, 〈B_t^2〉/〈B^2〉 ≃ 0.74, and B_0 ~ 0.7 mG while for DR21(OH) δ ≃ 12 mpc, 〈B_t^2〉/〈B^2〉 ≃ 0.70, and B_0 ~ 1.2 mG

    Compton Echoes from Gamma-ray Bursts

    Recent observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have provided growing evidence for collimated outflows and emission, and strengthened the connection between GRBs and supernovae. If massive stars are the progenitors of GRBs, the hard photon pulse will propagate in the pre-burst, dense environment. Circumstellar material will Compton scatter the prompt GRB radiation and give rise to a reflection echo. We calculate luminosities, spectra, and light curves of such Compton echoes in a variety of emission geometries and ambient gas distributions, and show that the delayed hard X-ray flash from a pulse propagating into a red supergiant wind could be detectable by Swift out to z~0.2. Independently of the gamma-ray spectrum of the prompt burst, reflection echoes will typically show a high-energy cutoff between m_ec^2/2 and m_ec^2 because of Compton downscattering. At fixed burst energy per steradian, the luminosity of the reflected echo is proportional to the beaming solid angle, Omega_b, of the prompt pulse, while the number of bright echoes detectable in the sky above a fixed limiting flux increases as Omega_b^{1/2}, i.e. it is smaller in the case of more collimated jets. The lack of an X-ray echo at one month delay from the explosion poses severe constraints on the possible existence of a lateral GRB jet in SN 1987A. The late r-band afterglow observed in GRB990123 is fainter than the optical echo expected in a dense red supergiant environment from a isotropic prompt optical flash. Significant MeV delayed emission may be produced through the bulk Compton (or Compton drag) effect resulting from the interaction of the decelerating fireball with the scattered X-ray radiation.Comment: LaTeX, 18 pages, 4 figures, revised version accepted for publication in the Ap

    Order within disorder: the atomic structure of ion-beam sputtered amorphous tantala (a-Ta2O5)

    Amorphous tantala (a-Ta2O5) is a technologically important material often used in high-performance coatings. Understanding this material at the atomic level provides a way to further improve performance. This work details extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements of a-Ta2O5 coatings, where high-quality experimental data and theoretical fits have allowed a detailed interpretation of the nearest-neighbor distributions. It was found that the tantalum atom is surrounded by four shells of atoms in sequence; oxygen, tantalum, oxygen, and tantalum. A discussion is also included on how these models can be interpreted within the context of published crystalline Ta 2O5 and other a-T2O5 studies

    Exercise and other non-pharmaceutical interventions for cancer-related fatigue in patients during or after cancer treatment : a systematic review incorporating an indirect-comparisons meta-analysis

    Aim: To assess the relative effects of different types of exercise and other non-pharmaceutical interventions on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in patients during and after cancer treatment. Design: Systematic review and indirect-comparisons meta-analysis. Data sources: Articles were searched in PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL and published meta-analyses. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies: Randomised studies published up to January 2017 evaluating different types of exercise or other non-pharmaceutical interventions to reduce CRF in any cancer type during or after treatment. Study appraisal and synthesis: Risk of bias assessment with PEDro criteria and random effects Bayesian network meta-analysis. Results: We included 245 studies. Comparing the treatments with usual care during cancer treatment, relaxation exercise was the highest ranked intervention with a standardised mean difference (SMD) of −0.77 (95% Credible Interval (CrI) −1.22 to −0.31), while massage (−0.78; −1.55 to −0.01), cognitive–behavioural therapy combined with physical activity (combined CBT, −0.72; −1.34 to −0.09), combined aerobic and resistance training (−0.67; −1.01 to −0.34), resistance training (−0.53; −1.02 to −0.03), aerobic (−0.53; −0.80 to −0.26) and yoga (−0.51; −1.01 to 0.00) all had moderate-to-large SMDs. After cancer treatment, yoga showed the highest effect (−0.68; −0.93 to −0.43). Combined aerobic and resistance training (−0.50; −0.66 to −0.34), combined CBT (−0.45; −0.70 to −0.21), Tai-Chi (−0.45; −0.84 to −0.06), CBT (−0.42; −0.58 to −0.25), resistance training (−0.35; −0.62 to −0.08) and aerobic (−0.33; −0.51 to −0.16) showed all small-to-moderate SMDs. Conclusions: Patients can choose among different effective types of exercise and non-pharmaceutical interventions to reduce CRF

    Results of the 2016 Indianapolis Biodiversity Survey, Marion County, Indiana

    Surprising biodiversity can be found in cities, but urban habitats are understudied. We report on a bioblitz conducted primarily within a 24-hr period on September 16 and 17, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. The event focused on stretches of three waterways and their associated riparian habitat: Fall Creek (20.6 ha; 51 acres), Pleasant Run (23.5 ha; 58 acres), and Pogue’s Run (27.1 ha; 67 acres). Over 75 scientists, naturalists, students, and citizen volunteers comprised 14 different taxonomic teams. Five hundred ninety taxa were documented despite the rainy conditions. A brief summary of the methods and findings are presented here.
