The benefits of student led-health promotion intervention
Purpose – The benefits of a student-led mental health promotion intervention on World Mental Health day result in tangible learning benefits for those students. The event occurs within the students’ own university.The paper aims to discuss this issue.
Design/methodology/approach – This case study evaluates students’ experience on a mental health promotion intervention. This intervention was to enable students to experience running a health promotion intervention and develop their health promotion skills outside of their lectures. Students were recruited who had just completed a module on health promotion. Students had to plan and organise the intervention, which included involving other organisations and facilities both external and internal to the university. The experience was evaluated through the case study using as data collection a semi-structured interview.
Findings – Results indicated that students found the experience to be beneficial in deepening their understanding of health promotion, mental health awareness and in increasing their self-esteem.
Limitations of this case study are in the argument for reproducibility of results, which is affected by the small number of students who took part.
Research limitations/implications – There are opportunities to develop this idea further and to broaden the availability of the initiative, enabling more students from diverse backgrounds to experience putting theory into practice.
Originality/value – To the best knowledge of the author, this study, although with limitations, provided a good understanding on how to develop health promotion skills within a university setting. Comparison of measurements of the outer scale of turbulence by three different techniques
We have made simultaneous and nearly simultaneous measurements of L0, the outer scale of turbulence, at the Palomar Observatory by using three techniques: angle-of-arrival covariance measurements with the Generalized Seeing Monitor (GSM), differential-image-motion measurements with the adaptive-optics system on the Hale 5-m telescope, and fringe speed measurements with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI). The three techniques give consistent results, an outer scale of approximately 10-20 m, despite the fact that the spatial scales of the three instruments vary from 1 m for the GSM to 100 m for the PTI
The Collider Phenomenology of Technihadrons in the Technicolor Straw Man Model
We discuss the phenomenology of the lightest SU(3)_C singlet and non-singlet
technihadrons in the Straw Man Model of low-scale technicolor (TCSM). The
technihadrons are assumed to be those arising in topcolor--assisted technicolor
models in which topcolor is broken by technifermion condensates. We improve
upon the description of the color--singlet sector presented in our earlier
paper introducing the TCSM (hep-ph/9903369). These improvements are most
important for subprocess energies well below the masses of the technirho and
techniomega, and, therefore, apply especially to e+e- colliders such as LEP and
a low--energy linear collider. In the color--octet sector, we consider mixing
of the gluon, the coloron V_8 from topcolor breaking, and four isosinglet
color--octet technirho mesons. We assume, as expected in walking technicolor,
that these technirhos decay into qbar-q, gg, and g-technipion final states, but
not into technipion pairs. All the TCSM production and decay processes
discussed here are included in the event generator Pythia. We present several
simulations appropriate for the Tevatron Collider, and suggest benchmark model
lines for further experimental investigation.Comment: 42 pages, 7 figure
The expression and prognostic value of the guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) Trio, Vav1 and TIAM-1 in human breast cancer
Background: Development of metastasis in breast cancer is a multi-step process comprising changes in cytoskeletal structure and gene expression of tumour cells leading to changes in cell adhesion and motility. The Rho GTPase proteins, which function as guanine nucleotide regulated binary switches, govern a variety of cellular processes including cell motility and migration, changes in cell adhesion as well as actin cytoskeletal reorganisation and gene expression/transcription. One group of activators which regulate the Rho-GTPases is the guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs), and this study looked at three such GEFs, Trio, Vav1 and TIAM-1. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of these GEFs, in human breast cancer and assess the affect on clinical outcome.
Methods: Specimens of fresh, frozen breast tumour tissue (n = 113) and normal background tissue (n = 30) were processed for quantitative PCR analysis. The expression and levels of expression of Trio, Vav1 and TIAM-1 were analysed using RT-PCR and real-time Q-PCR respectively. Sections were also immunostained with Trio and Tiam-1 antibodies.
Results: Tumour tissue exhibited high levels of all three Rho activators Trio, Vav1 and TIAM-1 compared with normal background breast tissue, reaching a level of significance for the GEF Trio (p = 0.013). Trio levels also increased significantly in patients with a poor prognostic index (p = 0.04).
Levels of TIAM-1 were significantly higher in tumour tissue from patients who died from breast cancer compared with those who survived (p = 0.04). No significant correlation was found between tumour grade and histology types.
Conclusion: High expression levels of Trio, Vav1 and TIAM-1 were seen in breast tumours, especially in those with poor prognosis. This suggests that aberrant regulation of Rho family activities by GEFs may have an important prognostic value in breast cancer
Topcolor assisted technicolor models and muon anomalous magnetic moment
We discuss and estimate the contributions of the new particles predicted by
topcolor assisted technicolor(TC2) models to the muon anomalous magnetic moment
. Our results show that the contributions of Pseudo Goldstone bosons
are very small which can be safely ignored. The main contributions come from
the ETC gauge boson and topcolor gauge boson . If we
demand that the mass of is consistent with other experimental
constrains, its contributions are smaller than that of . With
reasonable values of the parameters in TC2 models, the observed BNL results for

Transdermal Delivery of Functional Collagen \u3cem\u3eVia\u3c/em\u3e Polyvinylpyrrolidone Microneedles
Collagen makes up a large proportion of the human body, particularly the skin. As the body ages, collagen content decreases, resulting in wrinkled skin and decreased wound healing capabilities. This paper presents a method of delivering type I collagen into porcine and human skin utilizing a polyvinylpyrrolidone microneedle delivery system. The microneedle patches were made with concentrations of 1, 2, 4, and 8% type I collagen (w/w). Microneedle structures and the distribution of collagen were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and confocal microscopy. Patches were then applied on the porcine and human skin, and their effectiveness was examined using fluorescence microscopy. The results illustrate that this microneedle delivery system is effective in delivering collagen I into the epidermis and dermis of porcine and human skin. Since the technique presented in this paper is quick, safe, effective and easy, it can be considered as a new collagen delivery method for cosmetic and therapeutic applications
B-Meson Gateways to Missing Charmonium Levels
We outline a coherent strategy for exploring the four remaining narrow
charmonium states [\eta_{c}^{\prime}(2\slj{1}{1}{0}),
h_{c}(1\slj{1}{2}{1}), \eta_{c2}(1\slj{1}{3}{2}), and
\psi_{2}(1\slj{3}{3}{2})] expected to lie below charm threshold. Produced in
-meson decays, these levels should be identifiable \textit{now} via striking
radiative transitions among charmonium levels and in exclusive final states of
kaons and pions. Their production and decay rates will provide much needed new

Pseudo-Goldstone Boson Effects in Top-Antitop Productions at High Energy Hadron Colliders and Testing Technicolor Models
We study the top quark pair production process p+p(anti-p)-->top+antitop in
various kinds of technicolor (TC) models at the Fermilab Tevatron Run II and
the CERN LHC. The s-channel neutral pseudo-Goldstone bosons (PGB's) contribute
dominately to the production amplitudes from its coupling to the gluons through
the triangle loops of techniquarks and the top quark. Cross sections in
different TC models with s-channel PGB contributions are calculated. It is
shown that the PGB effects can be experimentally tested and different TC models
under consideration can be distinguished at the LHC. Therefore, the
p+p-->top+antitop process at the LHC provides feasible tests of the TC models.Comment: 10 pages in RevTex and 4 PS-files for the figures. Paramemter range
