Regulatory enclosures: small scale women livestock farmers
"There are efforts by a variety of social movements and civil society organizations
to encourage the development of alternative agri-food networks that are socially just,
ecological, humane and which ensure food security and food sovereignty. Many activists
focus their critiques on the role of large multinational corporations in restructuring and
globalizing the agri-food system. They offer in its place a vision of locally oriented,
small scale ecological farming. Drawing on the gendered experience of small scale
women farmers on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada who are developing local markets for
their farm products and the impact of new Provincial food safety regulations, this paper
argues if such social change initiatives are to be successful, one will need to look at how
food safety regulations accomplish outcomes that have relatively little to do with food
safety but effectively close the possibilities for more ecologically grounded and locally
focused food production and distribution. That is, food safety regulations seem inevitably
to close off to farmers the possibility of economic alternatives to the globalizing agri food
system. There will be 'no alternatives'. Paradoxically, consumer led food and food

Organic carbon accumulation in British saltmarshes

Radiocarbon dating was supported by the National Environment Isotope Facility Radiocarbon (Environment) Laboratory (allocation 2351.0321).Saltmarshes are a crucial component of the coastal carbon (C) system and provide a natural climate regulation service through the accumulation and long-term storage of organic carbon (OC) in their soils. These coastal ecosystems are under growing pressure from a changing climate and increasing anthropogenic disturbance. To manage and protect these ecosystems for C and to allow their inclusion in emissions and natural-capital accounting, as well as carbon markets, accurate and reliable estimates of OC accumulation are required. However, globally, such data are rare or of varying quality. Here, we quantify sedimentation rates and OC densities for 21 saltmarshes in Great Britain (GB). We estimate that, on average, saltmarshes accumulate OC at a rate of 110.88 ± 43.12 g C m-2 yr-1. This is considerably less than widely applied global saltmarsh averages. It is therefore highly likely that the contribution of northern European saltmarshes to global saltmarsh OC accumulation has been significantly overestimated. Taking account of the climatic, geomorphological, oceanographic, and ecological characteristics of all GB saltmarshes and the areal extent of different saltmarsh zones, we estimate that the 451.65 km2 of GB saltmarsh accumulates 46,563 ± 4,353 tonnes of OC annually. These low OC accumulation rates underline the importance of the 5.20 ± 0.65 million tonnes of OC already stored in these vulnerable coastal ecosystems. Going forward the protection and preservation of the existing stores of OC in GB saltmarshes must be a priority for the UK as this will provide climate benefits through avoided emissions several times more significant than the annual accumulation of OC in these ecosystems.Peer reviewe
CCAT-prime: a novel telescope for submillimeter astronomy
The CCAT-prime telescope is a 6-meter aperture, crossed-Dragone telescope,
designed for millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelength observations. It will be
located at an altitude of 5600 meters, just below the summit of Cerro
Chajnantor in the high Atacama region of Chile. The telescope's unobscured
optics deliver a field of view of almost 8 degrees over a large, flat focal
plane, enabling it to accommodate current and future instrumentation fielding
>100k diffraction-limited beams for wavelengths less than a millimeter. The
mount is a novel design with the aluminum-tiled mirrors nested inside the
telescope structure. The elevation housing has an integrated shutter that can
enclose the mirrors, protecting them from inclement weather. The telescope is
designed to co-host multiple instruments over its nominal 15 year lifetime. It
will be operated remotely, requiring minimum maintenance and on-site activities
due to the harsh working conditions on the mountain. The design utilizes
nickel-iron alloy (Invar) and carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials
in the mirror support structure, achieving a relatively temperature-insensitive
mount. We discuss requirements, specifications, critical design elements, and
the expected performance of the CCAT-prime telescope. The telescope is being
built by CCAT Observatory, Inc., a corporation formed by an international

Genome-wide association study identifies nine novel loci for 2D:4D finger ratio, a putative retrospective biomarker of testosterone exposure in utero
The ratio of the length of the index finger to that of the ring finger (2D:4D) is sexually dimorphic and is commonly used as a non-invasive biomarker of prenatal androgen exposure. Most association studies of 2D:4D ratio with a diverse range of sexspecific traits have typically involved small sample sizes and have been difficult to replicate, raising questions around the utility and precise meaning of the measure. In the largest genome-wide association meta-analysis of 2D:4D ratio to date (N=15 661, with replication N=75 821), we identified 11 loci (9 novel) explaining 3.8% of the variance in mean 2D:4D ratio. We also found weak evidence for association (b=0.06; P=0.02) between 2D:4D ratio and sensitivity to testosterone [length of the CAG microsatellite repeat in the androgen receptor (AR) gene] in females only. Furthermore, genetic variants associated with (adult) testosterone levels and/or sex hormone-binding globulin were not associated with 2D:4D ratio in our sample. Although we were unable to find strong evidence from our genetic study to support the hypothesis that 2D:4D ratio is a direct biomarker of prenatal exposure to androgens in healthy individuals, our findings do not explicitly exclude this possibility, and pathways involving testosterone may become apparent as the size of the discovery sample increases further. Early Initiation of Colorectal Cancer Screening in Individuals with Affected First-degree Relatives
BACKGROUND: Several guidelines recommend initiating colorectal cancer screening at age 40 for individuals with affected first-degree relatives, yet little evidence exists describing how often these individuals receive screening procedures. OBJECTIVES: To determine the proportion of individuals in whom early initiation of colorectal cancer screening might be indicated and whether screening disparities exist. DESIGN: Population-based Supplemental Cancer Control Module to the 2000 National Health Interview Survey. PARTICIPANTS: Respondents, 5,564, aged 40 to 49 years were included within the analysis. MEASUREMENTS: Patient self-report of sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, or fecal occult blood test. RESULTS: Overall, 279 respondents (5.4%: 95% C.I., 4.7, 6.2) reported having a first-degree relative affected with colorectal cancer. For individuals with a positive family history, 67 whites (27.9%: 95% C.I., 21.1, 34.5) and 3 African American (9.3%: 95% C.I., 1.7, 37.9) had undergone an endoscopic procedure within the previous 10 years (P-value = .03). After adjusting for age, family history, gender, educational level, insurance status, and usual source of care, whites were more likely to be current with early initiation endoscopic screening recommendations than African Americans (OR = 1.38: 95% C.I., 1.01, 1.87). Having an affected first-degree relative with colorectal cancer appeared to have a stronger impact on endoscopic screening for whites (OR = 3.21: 95% C.I., 2.31, 4.46) than for African Americans (OR = 1.05: 95% C.I., 0.15, 7.21). CONCLUSIONS: White participants with a family history are more likely to have endoscopic procedures beginning before age 50 than African Americans
The CCAT-Prime Submillimeter Observatory
The Cerro Chajnantor Atacama Telescope-prime (CCAT-prime) is a new 6-m,
off-axis, low-emissivity, large field-of-view submillimeter telescope scheduled
for first light in the last quarter of 2021. In summary, (a) CCAT-prime
uniquely combines a large field-of-view (up to 8-deg), low emissivity telescope
(< 2%) and excellent atmospheric transmission (5600-m site) to achieve
unprecedented survey capability in the submillimeter. (b) Over five years,
CCAT-prime first generation science will address the physics of star formation,
galaxy evolution, and galaxy cluster formation; probe the re-ionization of the
Universe; improve constraints on new particle species; and provide for improved
removal of dust foregrounds to aid the search for primordial gravitational
waves. (c) The Observatory is being built with non-federal funds (~ \$40M in
private and international investments). Public funding is needed for
instrumentation (~ \$8M) and operations (\$1-2M/yr). In return, the community
will be able to participate in survey planning and gain access to curated data
sets. (d) For second generation science, CCAT-prime will be uniquely positioned
to contribute high-frequency capabilities to the next generation of CMB surveys
in partnership with the CMB-S4 and/or the Simons Observatory projects or

The naked truth:a comprehensive clarification and classification of current 'myths' in naked mole-rat biology
The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) has fascinated zoologists for at least half a century. It has also generated considerable biomedical interest not only because of its extraordinary longevity, but also because of unusual protective features (e.g. its tolerance of variable oxygen availability), which may be pertinent to several human disease states, including ischemia/reperfusion injury and neurodegeneration. A recent article entitled 'Surprisingly long survival of premature conclusions about naked mole-rat biology' described 28 'myths' which, those authors claimed, are a 'perpetuation of beautiful, but falsified, hypotheses' and impede our understanding of this enigmatic mammal. Here, we re-examine each of these 'myths' based on evidence published in the scientific literature. Following Braude et al., we argue that these 'myths' fall into four main categories: (i) 'myths' that would be better described as oversimplifications, some of which persist solely in the popular press; (ii) 'myths' that are based on incomplete understanding, where more evidence is clearly needed; (iii) 'myths' where the accumulation of evidence over the years has led to a revision in interpretation, but where there is no significant disagreement among scientists currently working in the field; (iv) 'myths' where there is a genuine difference in opinion among active researchers, based on alternative interpretations of the available evidence. The term 'myth' is particularly inappropriate when applied to competing, evidence-based hypotheses, which form part of the normal evolution of scientific knowledge. Genome-wide association study of Tourette Syndrome
Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a developmental disorder that has one of the highest familial recurrence rates among neuropsychiatric diseases with complex inheritance. However, the identification of definitive TS susceptibility genes remains elusive. Here, we report the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) of TS in 1285 cases and 4964 ancestry-matched controls of European ancestry, including two European-derived population isolates, Ashkenazi Jews from North America and Israel, and French Canadians from Quebec, Canada. In a primary meta-analysis of GWAS data from these European ancestry samples, no markers achieved a genome-wide threshold of significance (p<5 × 10−8); the top signal was found in rs7868992 on chromosome 9q32 within COL27A1 (p=1.85 × 10−6). A secondary analysis including an additional 211 cases and 285 controls from two closely-related Latin-American population isolates from the Central Valley of Costa Rica and Antioquia, Colombia also identified rs7868992 as the top signal (p=3.6 × 10−7 for the combined sample of 1496 cases and 5249 controls following imputation with 1000 Genomes data). This study lays the groundwork for the eventual identification of common TS susceptibility variants in larger cohorts and helps to provide a more complete understanding of the full genetic architecture of this disorder
