    A Framework for the Evaluation of Semantics-based Service Composition Approaches

    The benefits of service composition are being largely acknowledged in the literature nowadays. However, as the amount of available services increases, it becomes difficult to manage, discover, select and compose them, so that automation is required in these processes. This can be achieved by using semantic information represented in ontologies. Currently there are many different approaches that support semantics-based service composition. However, still little effort has been spent on creating a common methodology to evaluate and compare such approaches. In this paper we present our initial ideas to create an evaluation framework for semantics-based service composition approaches. We use a collection of existing services, and define a set of evaluation metrics, confusion matrix-based and time-based. Furthermore, we present how composition evaluation scenarios are generated from the collection of services and specify the strategy to be used in the evaluation process. We demonstrate the proposed framework through an example. Currently there are mechanisms and initiatives to address the evaluation of the semantics-based service discovery and matchmaking approaches. However, still few efforts have been spent on the creation of comprehensive evaluation mechanisms for semantics-based service composition approaches

    An Automated Method for Tracking Clouds in Planetary Atmospheres

    We present an automated method for cloud tracking which can be applied to planetary images. The method is based on a digital correlator which compares two or more consecutive images and identifies patterns by maximizing correlations between image blocks. This approach bypasses the problem of feature detection. Four variations of the algorithm are tested on real cloud images of Jupiter’s white ovals from the Galileo mission, previously analyzed in Vasavada et al. [Vasavada, A.R., Ingersoll, A.P., Banfield, D., Bell, M., Gierasch, P.J., Belton, M.J.S., Orton, G.S., Klaasen, K.P., Dejong, E., Breneman, H.H., Jones, T.J., Kaufman, J.M., Magee, K.P., Senske, D.A. 1998. Galileo imaging of Jupiter’s atmosphere: the great red spot, equatorial region, and white ovals. Icarus, 135, 265, doi:10.1006/icar.1998.5984]. Direct correlation, using the sum of squared differences between image radiances as a distance estimator (baseline case), yields displacement vectors very similar to this previous analysis. Combining this distance estimator with the method of order ranks results in a technique which is more robust in the presence of outliers and noise and of better quality. Finally, we introduce a distance metric which, combined with order ranks, provides results of similar quality to the baseline case and is faster. The new approach can be applied to data from a number of space-based imaging instruments with a non-negligible gain in computing time

    Features of the circulation in the Mozambique Basin in 1981

    Several cruises of the RV Meiring NaudĂ© in 1981 were aimed at deriving the background or average circulation in the Mozambique Basin. This information would be of direct benefit to determine the advection of isolated eddies in this area. The results reflected the existence of a strong (up to 67 × 106 m3s−1) but variable current in the vicinity of the Mozambique Ridge. An eddy associated with this current and situated east of the Ridge emerged as a significant feature of the survey. No evidence could be found of a consistent background flow in the Basin

    Spectral and Rotational Changes in the Isolated Neutron Star RX J0720.4-3125

    RX J0720.4-3125 is an isolated neutron star that, uniquely in its class, has shown changes in its thermal X-ray spectrum. We use new spectra taken with Chandra's Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer, as well as archival observations, to try to understand the timescale and nature of these changes. We construct lightcurves, which show both small, slow variations on a timescale of years, and a larger event that occurred more quickly, within half a year. From timing, we find evidence for a `glitch' coincident with this larger event, with a fractional increase in spin frequency of 5x10^{-8}. We compare the `before' and `after' spectra with those from RX J1308.6+2127, an isolated neutron star with similar temperature and magnetic field strength, but with a much stronger absorption feature in its spectrum. We find that the `after' spectrum can be represented remarkably well by the superposition of the `before' spectrum, scaled by two thirds, and the spectrum of RX J1308.6+2127, thus suggesting that the event affected approximately one third of the surface.     Positive representations of finite groups in Riesz spaces

    In this paper, which is part of a study of positive representations of locally compact groups in Banach lattices, we initiate the theory of positive representations of finite groups in Riesz spaces. If such a representation has only the zero subspace and possibly the space itself as invariant principal bands, then the space is Archimedean and finite dimensional. Various notions of irreducibility of a positive representation are introduced and, for a finite group acting positively in a space with sufficiently many projections, these are shown to be equal. We describe the finite dimensional positive Archimedean representations of a finite group and establish that, up to order equivalence, these are order direct sums, with unique multiplicities, of the order indecomposable positive representations naturally associated with transitive GG-spaces. Character theory is shown to break down for positive representations. Induction and systems of imprimitivity are introduced in an ordered context, where the multiplicity formulation of Frobenius reciprocity turns out not to hold.Comment: 23 pages.     Real time automatic scene classification

    This work has been done as part of the EU VICAR (IST) project and the EU SCOFI project (IAP). The aim of the first project was to develop a real time video indexing classification annotation and retrieval system. For our systems, we have adapted the approach of Picard and Minka [3], who categorized elements of a scene automatically with so-called ’stuff’ categories (e.g., grass, sky, sand, stone). Campbell et al. [1] use similar concepts to describe certain parts of an image, which they named “labeled image regions”. However, they did not use these elements to classify the topic of the scene. Subsequently, we developed a generic approach for the recognition of visual scenes, where an alphabet of basic visual elements (or “typed patches”) is used to classify the topic of a scene. We define a new image element: a patch, which is a group of adjacent pixels within an image, described by a specific local pixel distribution, brightness, and color. In contrast with pixels, a patch as a whole can incorporate semantics. A patch is described by a HSI color histogram with 16 bins and by three texture features (i.e., the variance and two values based on the two eigen values of the covariance matrix of the Intensity values of a mask ran over the image. For more details on the features used we refer to Israel et al. [2]. We aimed at describing each image as a vector with a fixed size and with information about the position of patches that is not strict (strict position would limit generalization). Therefore, a fixed grid is placed over the image and each grid cell is segmented into patches, which are then categorized by a patch classifier. For each grid cell a frequency vector of its classified patches is calculated. These vectors are concate- nated. The resulting vector describes the complete image. Several grids were applied and several patch sizes with the grid cells were tested. Grid size of 3x2 combined with patches of size 16x16 provided the best system performance. For the two classification phases of our system, back-propagation networks were trained: (i) classification of the patches and (ii) classification of the image vector, as a whole. The system was tested on the classification of eight categories of scenes from the Corel database: interiors, city/street, forest, agriculture/countryside, desert, sea, portrait, and crowds. Each of these categories were relevant for the VICAR project. Based upon their relevance for these eight categories of scenes, we choose nine categories for the classification of the patches: building, crowd, grass, road, sand, skin, sky, tree, and water. This approach was found to be successful (for classification of the patches 87.5% correct, and classification of the scenes 73.8% correct). An advantage of our method is its low computational complexity. Moreover, the classified patches themselves are intermediate image representations and can be used for image classification, image segmentation as well as for image matching. A disadvantage is that the patches with which the classifiers were trained had to be manually classified. To solve this drawback, we currently develop algorithms for automatic extraction of relevant patch types. Within the IST project VICAR, a video indexing system was built for the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision1, consisting of four independent mod- ules: car recognition, face recognition, movement recognition (of people) and scene recognition. The latter module was based upon the afore mentioned approach. Within the IAP project SCOFI, a real time Internet pornography filter was built, based upon this approach. The system is currently running on several schools in Europe. Within the SCOFI filtering system, our image classification system (with a performance of 92% correct) works together with a text classi- fication system that includes a proxy server (FilterX, developed by Demokritos, Greece) to classify web-pages. Its total performance is 0% overblocking and 1% underblocking

    How Inheritances Affect Retirement Plannings

    This study uses the German SAVE panel study in order to estimate the effect of intergenerational transfers on the expected retirement entry age of individuals. The literature in this field typically estimates the transfer effect on the actual retirement probability. We suggest to base the analysis on the expected retirement age instead. This entails two methodological advantages: First, it is possible to exploit the within individual variation for the entire sample (even of those who do not retire) and thereby permits to analyze the life-cycle considerations of younger age groups. Second, the effect size can easily be expressed in terms of time and thereby monetary opportunity costs. We find that heirs expect to retire earlier, even when receipts are expected to some degree. Specifically, heirs plan to retire four to five months earlier and thereby accept costs in the form of foregone income and pension entitlements corresponding to 20-30% of the inheritance
