    Monitoring extensions for component-based distributed software

    This paper defines a generic class of monitoring extensions to component-based distributed enterprise software. Introducing a monitoring extension to a legacy application system can be very costly. In this paper, we identify the minimum support for application monitoring within the generic components of a distributed system, necessary for rapid development of new monitoring extensions. Furthermore, this paper offers an approach for design and implementation of monitoring extensions at reduced cost. A framework of basic facilities supporting the monitoring extensions is presented. These facilities handle different aspects critical to the monitoring process, such as ordering of the generated monitoring events, decoupling of the application components from the components of the monitoring extensions, delivery of the monitoring events to multiple consumers, etc.\ud The work presented in this paper is being validated in the prototype of a large distributed system, where a specific monitoring extension is built as a tool for debugging and testing the application behaviour.\u

    Pay32p of the Yeast Yarrowia lipolytica Is an Intraperoxisomal Component of the Matrix Protein Translocation Machinery

    Pay mutants of the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica fail to assemble functional peroxisomes. One mutant strain, pay32-1, has abnormally small peroxisomes that are often found in clusters surrounded by membranous material. The functionally complementing gene PAY32 encodes a protein, Pay32p, of 598 amino acids (66,733 D) that is a member of the tetratricopeptide repeat family. Pay32p is intraperoxisomal. In wild-type peroxisomes, Pay32p is associated primarily with the inner surface of the peroxisomal membrane, but ~30% of Pay32p is localized to the peroxisomal matrix. The majority of Pay32p in the matrix is complexed with two polypeptides of 62 and 64 kD recognized by antibodies to SKL (peroxisomal targeting signal-1). In contrast, in peroxisomes of the pay32-1 mutant, Pay32p is localized exclusively to the matrix and forms no complex. Biochemical characterization of the mutants pay32-1 and pay32-KO (a PAY32 gene disruption strain) showed that Pay32p is a component of the peroxisomal translocation machinery. Mutations in the PAY32 gene prevent the translocation of most peroxisome-bound proteins into the peroxisomal matrix. These proteins, including the 62-kD anti-SKL-reactive polypeptide, are trapped in the peroxisomal membrane at an intermediate stage of translocation in pay32 mutants. Our results suggest that there are at least two distinct translocation machineries involved in the import of proteins into peroxisomes.

    Monitoring of distributed component interactions

    We have describe a generic monitoring approach that can be used to enhance the quality of distributed component software. The generality of the approach is achieved through using reflective technology, i.e. CORBA Interceptors, CORBA POA and Java 2 features. A drawback of using interceptors is the fact that their interfaces have not been standardised so far. However, the process of standardisation is ongoing and has recently resulted in an OMG Joint Revised Submission called Portable Interceptors. Although the Java 2 API enables discovery of ‘forks’ in the execution, we find it lacking functionality for the purpose of discovering synchronisation points (e.g., ‘joins’) within multithreaded components

    TINA components used for service dubscription and deployment

    This paper presents a TINA-based services platform for deploying and provisioning of services, especially services supporting dynamic communication processes between individuals, such as required for distributed teamwork. The paper gives an overview of the platform architecture, and discusses two topics in more detail: (1) the Distributed Software Component (DSC) framework, which considerably facilitates the development of components from which the platform is built, and (2) some specific components of the platform, which play a crucial role in service management and deployment. In addition, a brief\ud evaluation of CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) ORBs (Object Request Broker) is given, based on the experience of using CORBA as the underlying distributed processing environment for the platform

    An Approach to Relate Viewpoints and Modeling Languages

    The architectural design of distributed enterprise applications from the viewpoints of different stakeholders has been proposed for some time, for example, as part of RM-ODP and IEEE 1471, and seems now-a-days to gain acceptance in practice. However, much work remains to be done on the relationships between different viewpoints. Failing to relate viewpoints may lead to a collection of viewpoint models that is inconsistent, and may therefore lead to an incorrect implementation. This paper defines an approach that helps designers to relate different viewpoints to each other. Thereby, it helps to enforce the consistency of the overall design. The results of this paper are expected to be particularly interesting for Model Driven Architecture (MDA) projects, since the proposed models can be used for the explicit definition of the models and relationships between models in an MDA trajectory

    Psychophysiological correlates of peritraumatic dissociative responses in survivors of life-threatening cardiac events

    The psychophysiological startle response pattern associated with peritraumatic dissociation (DISS) was studied in 103 survivors of a life-threatening cardiac event (mean age 61.0 years, SD 13.95). Mean time period since the cardiac event was 37 (79 IQD) months. All patients underwent a psychodiagnostic evaluation (including the Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire) and a psychophysiological startle experience which comprised the delivery of 15 acoustic startle trials. Magnitude and habituation to trials were measured by means of electromyogram (EMG) and skin conductance responses (SCR). Thirty-two (31%) subjects were indexed as patients with a clinically significant level of DISS symptoms. High-level DISS was associated with a higher magnitude of SCR (ANOVA for repeated measures p = 0.017) and EMG (p = 0.055) and an impaired habituation (SCR slope p = 0.064; EMG slope p = 0.005) in comparison to subjects with no or low DISS. In a subgroup analysis, high-level DISS patients with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; n = 11) in comparison to high-level DISS patients without subsequent PTSD (n = 19) exhibited higher EMG amplitudes during all trials (repeated measures analysis of variance IF = 5.511, p = 0.026). The results demonstrate exaggerated startle responses in SCR and EMG measures - an abnormal defensive response to high-intensity stimuli which indicates a steady state of increased arousal. DISS patients without PTSD exhibited balanced autonomic responses to the startle trials. DISS may, therefore, unfold malignant properties only in combination with persistent physiological hyperarousability. Copyright (C) 2002 S. Karger AG, Basel

    Contact binaries with additional components. III. The adaptive optics detections

    We present results of the CFHT adaptive optics search for companions of a homogeneous group of contact binary stars, as a contribution to our attempts to prove a hypothesis that these binaries require a third star to become so close as observed. In addition to companions directly discovered at separations of >=1", we introduced a new method of AO image analysis utilizing distortions of the AO diffraction ring pattern at separations of 0.07"-1". Very close companions, with separations in the latter range were discovered in systems HV Aqr, OO Aql, CK Boo, XY Leo, BE Scl, and RZ Tau. More distant companions were detected in V402 Aur, AO Cam, V2082 Cyg. Our results provide a contribution to the mounting evidence that the presence of close companions is a very common phenomenon for very close binaries with orbital periods <1 day.Comment: Full Figs.4 and 5 are in http://www.astro.utoronto.ca/~rucinski/Triples3
