    Cylindrically symmetric spinning Brans-Dicke spacetimes with closed timelike curves

    We present here three new solutions of Brans-Dicke theory for a stationary geometry with cylindrical symmetry in the presence of matter in rigid rotation with Tμμ0T^\mu_\mu\neq 0. All the solutions have eternal closed timelike curves in some region of the spacetime, the size of which depends on ω\omega.     El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar la contrastación de un modelo teórico de aprendizaje en el cual se postula que, de acuerdo con el Modelo 3P (Biggs, 1987a, 1993a), las variables de presagio inciden sobre las de producto, mediadas por las de proceso. El modelo ha sido analizado en base a las respuestas dadas por 561 estudiantes portugueses de Educación Secundaria, a un conjunto de instrumentos de medida (Inventario de Estilos de Pensamiento IEP, Batería de Pruebas de Razonamiento Diferencial BPRD, Cuestionario de Estrategias de Autorregulación del Aprendizaje, cuestiones para evaluar las concepciones de aprendizaje, metas escolares y un problema evaluado a partir de la taxonomía SOLO) y el rendimiento final del curso en diferentes áreas académicas. Los resultados confirman las hipótesis formuladas en el modelo postulado en esta investigación y son discutidas algunas consecuencias para la práctica educativa y para el desarrollo de los alumnos.The academic learning viewed from the perspective of John Biggs’ «3P model». The authors tested a theoretical model in which is postulated that, in accordance with the Pattern 3P (Biggs, 1987a, 1993a) the presage variables, impact on those of product, mediated by those of process. The model was contrasted in a group of 561 portuguese students of Secondary Education, using the following instruments: Inventory of Thinking Styles IEP, Battery of Differential Reasoning Tests BPRD, Questionnaire of Self-regulation learning strategies, questions to evaluate the learning conceptions, school goals and a problem evaluated with the SOLO taxonomy. Academic Achievement was measured by the grades obtained by the students in different areas at the end of academic year. The results confirm the hypotheses formulated in the pattern postulated in this investigation. Consequences for the educational practice and the promoting of students learning are discussed

    Biomimicry is a strategy that makes practical use of evolution to find efficient and sustainable ways to produce chemical compounds or engineer products. Exploring the natural machinery of enzymes for the production of desired compounds is a highly profitable investment, but the design of efficient biomimetic systems remains a considerable challenge. An ideal biomimetic system self-assembles in solution, binds a desired range of substrates and catalyzes reactions with turnover rates similar to the native system. To this end, tailoring catalytic functionality in engineered peptides generally requires site-directed mutagenesis or the insertion of additional amino acids, which entails an intensive search across chemical and sequence space. Here we discuss a novel strategy for the computational design of biomimetic compounds and processes that consists of a) characterization of the wild-type and biomimetic systems; b) identification of key descriptors for optimization; c) an efficient search through sequence and chemical space to tailor the catalytic capabilities of the biomimetic system. Through this proof-of-principle study, we are able to decisively understand and identify whether a given scaffold is useful, appropriate and tailorable for a given, desired task

    Assessment of genetic diversity of zoonotic Brucella spp. recovered from livestock in Egypt using multiple locus VNTR analysis

    Brucellosis is endemic in most parts of Egypt, where it is caused mainly by Brucella melitensis biovar 3, and affects cattle and small ruminants in spite of ongoing efforts devoted to its control. Knowledge of the predominant Brucella species/strains circulating in a region is a prerequisite of a brucellosis control strategy. For this reason a study aiming at the evaluation of the phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity of a panel of 17 Brucella spp. isolates recovered from domestic ruminants (cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goat) from four governorates during a period of five years (2002-2007) was carried out using microbiological tests and molecular biology techniques (PCR, MLVA-15, and sequencing). Thirteen strains were identified as B. melitensis biovar 3 while all phenotypic and genetic techniques classified the remaining isolates as B. abortus (n = 2) and B. suis biovar 1 (n = 2). MLVA-15 yielded a high discriminatory power (h = 0.801), indicating a high genetic diversity among the B. melitensis strains circulating among domestic ruminants in Egypt. This is the first report of the isolation of B. suis from cattle in Egypt which, coupled with the finding of B. abortus, suggests a potential role of livestock as reservoirs of several zoonotic Brucella species in the region

    Infrared Spectroscopy of Mobility-Selected H+-Gly-Pro-Gly-Gly (GPGG)

    We report the first results from a new instrument capable of acquiring infrared spectra of mobility-selected ions. This demonstration involves using ion mobility to first separate the protonated peptide Gly-Pro-Gly-Gly (GPGG) into two conformational families with collisional cross-sections of 93.8 and 96.8 Å2. After separation, each family is independently analyzed by acquiring the infrared predissociation spectrum of the H2-tagged molecules. The ion mobility and spectroscopic data combined with density functional theory (DFT) based molecular dynamics simulations confirm the presence of one major conformer per family, which arises from cis/trans isomerization about the proline residue. We induce isomerization between the two conformers by using collisional activation in the drift tube and monitor the evolution of the ion distribution with ion mobility and infrared spectroscopy. While the cis-proline species is the preferred gas-phase structure, its relative population is smaller than that of the trans-proline species in the initial ion mobility drift distribution. This suggests that a portion of the trans-proline ion population is kinetically trapped as a higher energy conformer and may retain structural elements from solution

    Assessing bias in aerial surveys for cetaceans: Results from experiments conducted with the franciscana dolphin

    Line transect aerial surveys are widely used for estimating abundance of biological populations, including threatened species. However, estimates obtained with data collected from aircraft are often underestimated because of visibility bias and bias in estimating group sizes from a fast-moving platform. An assessment of multiple sources of bias in aerial surveys were carried out in Brazilian coastal waters by experiments on multiple survey platforms (i.e., boat, airplane and helicopter). These studies focused on evaluating visibility bias (perception and availability bias) and potential differences in the estimation of group sizes from different types of platforms used in franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei) abundance surveys. The ultimate goal was to develop correction factors to improve accuracy of estimates of density and population size for this threatened dolphin. Estimates of density and group sizes computed from boats were assumed to be unbiased and were compared to estimates of these quantities obtained from an airplane in the same area and period. In addition, helicopter surveys were conducted in two areas where water turbidity differed (clear vs. murky waters) to determine surfacing-diving intervals of franciscana groups and to estimate availability for aerial platforms. Abundance computed from the aerial survey data underestimated the true abundance by about 4-5 times, with ~70% of the total bias resulting from visibility bias (~80% from availability bias and ~20% from perception bias) and ~30% from bias in estimates of group size. The use of multiple survey platforms in contrasting habitats provided the opportunity to compute correction factors that can be used to refine range wide abundance estimates of the threatened franciscana given certain assumptions are met. Visibility bias and group size bias were substantial and clearly indicate the importance for accounting for such correction factors to produce unequivocal population assessment based on aerial survey data.Fil: Sucunza, Federico.     Investigating the influence of product perception and geometric features

    Research in emotional design and Kansei Engineering has shown that aesthetics play a significant role in the appeal of a product. This paper contributes to establishing a methodology to identify the relationships between perceptions, aesthetic features, desire to own and background of consumers. Surveys were conducted with 71 participants to gather their perceptions of 11 vase concepts. Advanced statistical analyses, including mixed models, were applied to allow generalisation of the results beyond the data sample. Significant relations between the desire to own a product and how the product is perceived were found (the desire to own was found to be related to beautiful, expensive, elegant, exciting, feminine, common and dynamic vases), as well as between the perceptions and the parameters describing the form of the vases (a vase was perceived as beautiful if it had many curved lines and was simple and tall). An automated mixed model analysis was conducted and revealed that general rules can be found between aesthetic features, perceptions and ownership, which can apply across gender and culture. The findings include design rules that link aesthetic features with perceptions. These contribute to research as guidelines for design synthesis and can either be implemented via shape grammars or parametric modelling approaches. These rules are also interesting for 3D printing applications, especially important when the consumer is the designer. Some of these design rules are linked to the desire to own a product, they have implications for industry, and they offer guidelines to creating attractive products that people want to own
