    Improving Bag of Visual Words Representations with Genetic Programming

    The bag of visual words is a well established representation in diverse computer vision problems. Taking inspiration from the fields of text mining and retrieval, this representation has proved to be very effective in a large number of domains. In most cases, a standard term-frequency weighting scheme is considered for representing images and videos in computer vision. This is somewhat surprising, as there are many alternative ways of generating bag of words representations within the text processing community. This paper explores the use of alternative weighting schemes for landmark tasks in computer vision: image categorization and gesture recognition. We study the suitability of using well-known supervised and unsupervised weighting schemes for such tasks. More importantly, we devise a genetic program that learns new ways of representing images and videos under the bag of visual words representation. The proposed method learns to combine term-weighting primitives trying to maximize the classification performance. Experimental results are reported in standard image and video data sets showing the effectiveness of the proposed evolutionary algorithm

    Using coding and non-coding rare variants to target candidate genes in patients with severe tinnitus

    Tinnitus is the phantom percept of an internal non-verbal set of noises and tones. It is reported by 15% of the population and it is usually associated with hearing and/or brain disorders. The role of structural variants (SVs) in coding and non-coding regions has not been investigated in patients with severe tinnitus. In this study, we performed whole-genome sequencing in 97 unrelated Swedish individuals with chronic tinnitus (TIGER cohort). Rare single nucleotide variants (SNV), large structural variants (LSV), and copy number variations (CNV) were retrieved to perform a gene enrichment analysis in TIGER and in a subgroup of patients with severe tinnitus (SEVTIN, n = 34), according to the tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) scores. An independent exome sequencing dataset of 147 Swedish tinnitus patients was used as a replication cohort (JAGUAR cohort) and population-specific datasets from Sweden (SweGen) and Non-Finish Europeans (NFE) from gnomAD were used as control groups. SEVTIN patients showed a higher prevalence of hyperacusis, hearing loss, and anxiety when they were compared to individuals in the TIGER cohort. We found an enrichment of rare missense variants in 6 and 8 high-constraint genes in SEVTIN and TIGER cohorts, respectively. Of note, an enrichment of missense variants was found in the CACNA1E gene in both SEVTIN and TIGER. We replicated the burden of missense variants in 9 high-constrained genes in the JAGUAR cohort, including the gene NAV2, when data were compared with NFE.     Unification of Treatments and Interventions for Tinnitus Patients (UNITI): a study protocol for a multi-center randomized clinical trial

    The UNITI project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program (grant agreement number 848261).Background: Tinnitus represents a relatively common condition in the global population accompanied by various comorbidities and severe burden in many cases. Nevertheless, there is currently no general treatment or cure, presumable due to the heterogeneity of tinnitus with its wide variety of etiologies and tinnitus phenotypes. Hence, most treatment studies merely demonstrated improvement in a subgroup of tinnitus patients. The majority of studies are characterized by small sample sizes, unstandardized treatments and assessments, or applications of interventions targeting only a single organ level. Combinatory treatment approaches, potentially targeting multiple systems as well as treatment personalization, might provide remedy and enhance treatment responses. The aim of the present study is to systematically examine established tinnitus therapies both alone and in combination in a large sample of tinnitus patients. Further, it wants to provide the basis for personalized treatment approaches by evaluating a specific decision support system developed as part of an EU-funded collaborative project (Unification of treatments and interventions for tinnitus patients; UNITI project). Methods/study design: This is a multi-center parallel-arm randomized clinical trial conducted at five different clinical sites over the EU. The effect of four different tinnitus therapy approaches (sound therapy, structured counseling, hearing aids, cognitive behavioral therapy) applied over a time period of 12 weeks as a single or rather a combinatory treatment in a total number of 500 chronic tinnitus patients will be investigated. Assessments and interventions are harmonized over the involved clinical sites. The primary outcome measure focuses on the domain tinnitus distress assessed via the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory. Discussion: Results and conclusions from the current study might not only provide an essential contribution to combinatory and personalized treatment approaches in tinnitus but could also provide more profound insights in the heterogeneity of tinnitus, representing an important step towards a cure for tinnitus.European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program 84826

Será el resultado de un complejo proceso político marcado por tendencias contradictorias (tránsito del franquismo al parlamentarismo, del centralismo al autonomismo), activismo social-ambientalista y pugnas entre corporativismos disciplinarios (biología, ingeniería, geografía). A partir de entrevistas cualitativas, fuentes hemerográficas y documentales, explicamos este modelo, su visión y dispositivos como un marco político-administrativo que surge de relaciones personales y de la confrontación entre corrientes dentro del partido de gobierno en Andalucía (PSOE) en el contexto de un ascenso de las demandas y el movimiento ecologistas.Between 1978 and 1989, a nationally and internationally acclaimed nature conservation model was created in Andalusia. It would be the result of a complex political process, marked by contradictory tendencies (the transition from Francoism to parliamentarism, from centralism to autonomy), social-environmental activism, and disputes among professional disciplines (biology, engineering, geography, among others).     How did the COVID-19 lockdown affect children and adolescent's well-being: Spanish parents, children, and adolescents respond

    Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown strategies have been widely used to contain SARS-CoV-2 virus spread. Children and adolescents are especially vulnerable to suffering psychological effects as result of such measures. In Spain, children were enforced to a strict home lockdown for 42 days during the first wave. Here, we studied the effects of lockdown in children and adolescents through an online questionnaire. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Spain using an open online survey from July (after the lockdown resulting from the first pandemic wave) to November 2020 (second wave). We included families with children under 16 years-old living in Spain. Parents answered a survey regarding the lockdown effects on their children and were instructed to invite their children from 7 to 16 years-old (mandatory scholar age in Spain) to respond a specific set of questions. Answers were collected through an application programming interface system, and data analysis was performed using R. Results: We included 1,957 families who completed the questionnaires, covering a total of 3,347 children. The specific children’s questionnaire was completed by 167 kids (7–11 years-old), and 100 adolescents (12–16 years-old). Children, in general, showed high resilience and capability to adapt to new situations. Sleeping problems were reported in more than half of the children (54%) and adolescents (59%), and these were strongly associated with less time doing sports and spending more than 5 h per day using electronic devices. Parents perceived their children to gain weight (41%), be more irritable and anxious (63%) and sadder (46%). Parents and children differed significantly when evaluating children’s sleeping disturbances. Conclusions: Enforced lockdown measures and isolation can have a negative impact on children and adolescent’s mental health and well-being. In future waves of the current pandemic, or in the light of potential epidemics of new emerging infections, lockdown measures targeting children, and adolescents should be reconsidered taking into account their infectiousness potential and their age-specific needs, especially to facilitate physical activity and to limit time spent on electronic devices.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
