    Operator monotones, the reduction criterion and the relative entropy

    We introduce the theory of operator monotone functions and employ it to derive a new inequality relating the quantum relative entropy and the quantum conditional entropy.     Persons adversely affected by a decision of any officer, board, commission or other division of the great number of political subdivisions of the State usually encounter difficulty in appealing such decision. This fact has long troubled the judiciary of Ohio. Thus, adoption in 1957 of Chapter 2506 of the Ohio Revised Code- Appeals From Orders of Administrative Officers and Agencies was immediately welcomed by the courts as providing assistance to those citizens who found themselves adverse to, and totally at the mercy of, their government. Although Ohio Revised Code, Chapter 2506, radically changed the procedure with respect to appeals from boards and commissions below the state level, the courts recognized the need for such change since frequently these local boards consist of non-legally trained personnel who, almost universally, are part-time officials. The procedures utilized by local boards and commissions oftentimes were so devoid of guarantees of due process of law for citizens appearing before them that at least one court, in commenting on the total lack of safeguards avail-able to litigants was constrained to conclude that: A litigant ought not suffer the consequences of a procedure that is so loose and indefinite

    Multi-Laboratory Results for the Cathodoluminescence Emission Spectrum from a Synthetic Zircon Standard

    The Standards Committee of the Society for Luminescence Microscopy and Spectroscopy (SLMS) circulated doped zircon crystals as a standard for comparison of cathodoluminescence (CL) emission spectra obtained at different laboratories. Eleven laboratories have submitted spectra acquired from this standard. The crystals are synthetic zircons doped with 1.4 wt.% of Dy2O3 The participating laboratories used a variety of CL instrumentation including cold cathode optical micro-scope attachments, hot cathode optical microscope attachments, and EMPA/SEM-based systems. Two laboratories provided both uncorrected and corrected spectra. All other spectra are uncorrected. A variety of different spectrometers/spectrographs and detector systems were used. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), photo diode arrays, intensified photo diode arrays, and charge coupled devices (CCDs) are represented among the final results. The laboratories with apparently the best resolving power reported 8 peaks in the multiplet at 485 nm. The spectra submitted by some laboratories showed only a single peak at this position. The wavelength scale calibrations were compared by noting the wavelength of the most intense peak in the 485 multiplet. This varied from 476.3 nm to 489 nm among the eleven laboratories. The systems have different overall transmission and detection functions: a combination of the influence of the transmission of the viewing window (typically leaded-glass), the microscope, the fiber optics coupling (if used), the response of the grating and spectrometer/spectrograph, and the detector response. As an initial test of this variation, the ratio of the peak maximum intensity at 575 nm to that at 485 nm was compared. This ratio varied from 0.6 to 3.93 among the eleven laboratories

    Associations of a Leptin Gene Polymorphism with Beef Carcass Traits

    The objective was to evaluate associations of leptin genotype with fat and muscle traits in cattle. A single nucleotide polymorphism located in exon 2 of the leptin gene in cattle codes for an amino acid change from arginine (R) to cysteine (C). Genotypes for the polymorphism were determined on 492 crossbred calves by AciI digestion of amplified PCR product (C allele: 130bp; R allele: 73bp and 57bp). Data were analyzed by least-squares, accounting for effects of genotype, sex, year, location, breed-type, and calf sire. Genotype was not significantly associated with carcass weight or ribeye area in any of the analyses. Associations of genotype with external fat thickness, KPH fat, and overall cutability were small and generally not statistically significant. Subjective marbling scores (assigned by USDA grader; 350 = slight 50, 400 = small 0, 450 = small 50) were higher (P = .02) for CC (411 units) than for RR (388 units) genotype when adjusted to a constant slaughter age of 433 days. Similar differences between genotypes in marbling scores were observed when adjusting to a constant carcass weight or external fat thickness. Given the relatively modest association between genotype and marbling, potential application of the marker in the industry as a selection tool would be most relevant in herds with a large proportion of market animals possessing marbling scores that are near a price threshold level (e.g., select/choice quality grade)
