    Site-Based Transdisciplinary Educational Partnerships: Development, Implementation, and Outcomes of a Collaborative Professional Preparation Program

    In this article, we describe the conceptual framework, development, implementation, and outcomes of an experimental professional preparation program. University students from preparation programs in general education, educational administration, school psychology, and special education formed transdisciplinary cohorts that were placed in school settings to complete a variety of activities designed to foster greater collaboration among disciplines in serving children and youth at risk. We describe what was learned throughout the project as well as its operational structure, outcomes, and future directions for transdisciplinary professional development

    Investigation of the Effects of Growth Environment on the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power of Selected Plant Species

    Metabolism within the human body creates multiple oxidant by-products. These oxidants may cause cell injury, damage to DNA, and other complications leading to the development of chronic disease. Antioxidants are important dietary components which defend against oxidative damage by scavenging the oxidant by-products. Research has shown that diets rich in antioxidants offer protection against various chronic diseases. The goal of this research is to determine the effects of varying growing conditions on the production of antioxidants, and to ultimately find the best possible plant-growth environment for maximum production of antioxidants. Each plant was grown under three different environmental conditions; positive, negative, and control treatment. The positive treatment consisted of supplying water to field capacity with fertilizer, the negative treatment consisted supplying half of the water required to reach field capacity with no fertilizer, and the control treatment consisted of supplying water to field capacity with no fertilizer. Ferric reducing antioxidant levels were then determined. The ferric reducing antioxidant power evaluates antioxidant potential by reducing ferric iron (Fe3+) to its ferrous form (Fe2+). Addition of excess ferric ions result in the development of a Prussian blue color. The ferric reducing antioxidant power of the extracts was measured by reading the absorbance at 750 nm using a spectrophotometer. The ferric reducing antioxidant power assay was performed on extracts of red clover (Trifolium pratense), Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) and wild garlic (Allium vineale). The differing growing conditions resulted in variation in the production of antioxidants by the plants. The data obtained revealed that the plants grown under the negative treatment produced a significantly lower level of antioxidants when compared to the plants grown under the positive treatment. These results indicate that growing conditions can influence antioxidant production in plants

    Pilot Study of an Individualised Early Postpartum Intervention to Increase Physical Activity in Women with Previous Gestational Diabetes

    Optimal strategies to prevent progression towards overt diabetes in women with recent gestational diabetes remain ill defined. We report a pilot study of a convenient, home based exercise program with telephone support, suited to the early post-partum period. Twenty eight women with recent gestational diabetes were enrolled at six weeks post-partum into a 12 week randomised controlled trial of Usual Care (n = 13) versus Supported Care (individualised exercise program with regular telephone support; n = 15). Baseline characteristics (Mean ± SD) were: Age  33 ± 4  years; Weight 80 ± 20 kg and Body Mass Index (BMI) 30.0 ± 9.7 kg/m2. The primary outcome, planned physical activity {Median (Range)}, increased by 60 (0–540) mins/week in the SC group versus 0 (0–580) mins/week in the UC group (P = 0.234). Walking was the predominant physical activity. Body weight, BMI, waist circumference, % body fat, fasting glucose and insulin did not change significantly over time in either group. This intervention designed to increase physical activity in post-partum women with previous gestational diabetes proved feasible. However, no measurable improvement in metabolic or biometric parameters was observed over a three month period

    Metabolomics Analysis Identifies D-Alanine-D-alanine Ligase as the Primary Lethal Target of D-cycloserine in Mycobacteria

    D-cycloserine is an effective second line antibiotic used as a last resort to treat multi (MDR)- and extensively (XDR)- drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. D-cycloserine interferes with the formation of peptidoglycan biosynthesis by competitive inhibition of Alanine racemase (Alr) and D-Alanine-D-alanine ligase (Ddl). Although, the two enzymes are known to be inhibited, the in vivo lethal target is still unknown. Our NMR metabolomics work has revealed that Ddl is the primary target of DCS, as cell growth is inhibited when the production of D-alanyl-Dalanine is halted. It is shown that inhibition of Alr may contribute indirectly by lowering the levels of D-alanine thus allowing DCS to outcompete D-alanine for Ddl binding. The NMR data also supports the possibility of a transamination reaction to produce D-alanine from pyruvate and glutamate, thereby bypassing Alr inhibition. Furthermore, the inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis results in a cascading effect on cellular metabolism as there is a shift toward the catabolic routes to compensate for accumulation of peptidoglycan precursors

    A Team Observed Structured Clinical Encounter (TOSCE) for Pre-Licensure Learners in Maternity Care: A Short Report on the Development of an Assessment Tool for Collaboration

    Background: Despite the support for Interprofessional Education (IPE) among policymakers, educators and professional regulating bodies, the research literature is limited with respect to the evaluation of effective assessment strategies. This short report outlines the development of a Team Observed Structured Clinical Encounter (TOSCE), which brings together learners from three health professions involved in primary care obstetrics-family physicians, midwives, and obstetricians-as a strategy for assessing collaborative competencies.Methods: An interprofessional research team was brought together to develop and implement the TOSCE. The process by which the team generated TOSCE scenario stations is outlined, including the consensus-building process, based on a modified Delphi technique, to include expert input from others in the field of practice.Findings: The scenarios developed by the research team for the TOSCE are highlighted including the assessment criteria, based on the Canadian InterprofessionalHealth Collaborative's National Competency Framework.Conclusions: The TOSCE is an emerging and innovative learning tool that encourages the development of essential collaborative competencies. The process of developing a TOSCE outlined in this report offers an affordable, streamlined approach that could be used by educators in many disciplines as a summative or formative assessment strategy

    Evidence of Zavora Bay as a critical site for reef manta rays, Mobula alfredi, in southern Mozambique

    The largest known reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) population in Africa has been monitored for more than 20 years at several locations on the coast of the Inhambane Province in southern Mozambique. Nonetheless, before this study, little had been reported on the population dynamics of M. alfredi from Zavora, a remote bay in the region. Photographic mark-recapture was used to investigate the size and structure of M. alfredi that aggregate at "Red Sands," a reef cleaning station in Zavora Bay. An 11 year photographic data set was used to identify 583 M. alfredi individuals between 2010 and 2021. More than half of M. alfredi individuals were resighted at least once, with most encounters (up to 18 for one individual) occurring during the peak sighting period in July-November each year. An even sex ratio was observed, 44% females and 50% males, with no significant difference in resightings between the sexes. Pollock's robust design population models were used to estimate annual abundance, emigration, annual apparent survival and capture probability at Red Sands from July to November over a 6 year period (2016-2021). Abundance estimates varied year to year, ranging from 35 (95% c.i. [30, 45]) up to 233 (95% c.i. [224, 249]) M. alfredi individuals. Given the seasonal affinity of M. alfredi observed at Red Sands, this study highlights the importance of understanding fine-scale site use within the larger home range of this population to develop local management strategies
