    Exploring bioactive compounds present in international patents targeting brain functions

    The interest in nervous system disorders is an evident fact with more than 60 000 articles published on PUBMED only in the year of 2016. Actually, in our daily life we are constantly exposed to different environmental factors known to be prejudicial to the health of our nervous system. In this context, a holistic view of food consumption is gaining increasing importance with the perspective of using functional components of specific foods to improve our health or diminish the risk of disease. The aim of our work is to evaluate the use of nutritional food components of traditional Portuguese diet in international patents of dietary supplements or the so called functional foods described to improve brain functions. The WIPO platform was used to collect data of these patents, and from the last 3 years we identified 35 patents using more than 150 different components. We selected the most frequent components and the indications described in the patents, and then examined the possible bioactive compounds for each component. The prevalent functional components described were walnuts, peanuts, wolfberries, mulberries, dates, jujube, creatine, carnitine, ginseng and soybean. Other components rich in omega-3, such as docosahexaenoic acid and superba oil, were also identified. These patents were described to target brain functions such as intelligence, memory, concentration and in some cases compounds are indicated to traumatic brain injury. Regarding local sources, we found several nutritional components of traditional Portuguese diet that have similar compounds of those found in the international components described in patents.     Image, satisfaction, destination and product post-visit behaviours: How do they relate in emerging destinations?

    This study proposes a conceptual model that sheds light on how the destination image of emerging tourist destinations relates to tourism satisfaction and intention to subsequently recommend the place and purchase its products. Destination image is studied through three components – cognitive, affective, and unique. Unique image has been overlooked in previous research and few studies focus on its measurement. This study uses a new method of measuring it through text-mining of user-generated blog posts. Findings from a sample of 314 foreign visitors to Sofia, Bulgaria, reveal that the affective image influences tourist satisfaction and post-visit behaviour; the cognitive component has a significant effect on all the constructs, except for tourist satisfaction, whereas unique image only influences the intention to recommend and purchase destination country products.     The role of brand equity in a new rebranding strategy of a private label brand

    The purpose of this study is to understand the effects of the rebranding process on private label performance output, namely, on brand equity. More specifically, the study aims to investigate the performance of brand equity constructs (brand awareness, brand associations, perceived quality and brand loyalty) before and after the rebranding process. A questionnaire was administered to 466 shoppers, who put forth their perceptions, of the brand’s image, before and after the rebranding. When analyzed altogether, brand equity constructs have not suffered significant changes, meaning that previously existing brand equity had successfully been transferred onto the new brand; however, new brand equity was not created in the process. Consumers do still associate the private label brand image with its previous brand identity. Nevertheless, their ability to easily identify the various brand tiers was improved with the new image. Consumers associate the rebranded image with being “innovative” and “original” and describe the previous image as “inexpensive” and “trustworthy”. Brand awareness and loyalty are the factors that relate the most to consumers’ perceptions of the brand before its rebranding.     Conservação de recursos genéticos animais de grande porte na Amazônia Oriental (BAGAM).

    Os búfalos da raça Carabao e do Tipo Baio compõem pequenas populações no País, sofrendo assim, ameaças de extinção e fortes riscos de descaracterização. O Núcleo de conservação desenvolve estudos voltados à avaliação de parâmetros produtivos e reprodutivos das espécies supracitadas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi acompanhar as ações de conservação genética no Banco de Germoplasma Animal da Amazônia Oriental/BAGAM, com ênfase na coleta, caracterização e documentação dessas espécies de importância socioeconômica para a região. Localizado na ilha de Marajó/PA, o BAGAM atualmente mantêm 238 búfalos entre Carabaos e Baios. Os dados de características fenotípicas, morfométricas, moleculares, assim como, parâmetros produtivos e reprodutivos estão sendo organizados e documentados em bancos de dados de espécies em conservação.PIBIC-2011

    Above‐Ground Biomass Estimation with High Spatial Resolution Satellite Images

    Assessment and monitoring of forest biomass are frequently done with allometric functions per species for inventory plots. The estimation per area unit is carried out with an extrapolation method. In this chapter, a review of the recent methods to estimate forest above‐ground biomass (AGB) using remote sensing data is presented. A case study is given with an innovative methodology to estimate above‐ground biomass based on crown horizontal projection obtained with high spatial resolution satellite images for two evergreen oak species. The linear functions fitted for pure, mixed and both compositions showed a good performance. Also, the functions with dummy variables to distinguish species and compositions adjusted had the best performance. An error threshold of 5% corresponds to stand areas of 8.7 and 5.5 ha for the functions of all species and compositions without and with dummy variables. This method enables the overall area evaluation, and it is easily implemented in a geographic information system environment

    Good Agreement Between Echocardiography and Impedance Cardiography in the Assessment of Left Ventricular Performance in Hypertensive Patients

    Background: Impedance cardiography (ICG) is a noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring tool which can define hypertensive patients' hemodynamic profiles and help to tailor antihypertensive therapy. This study assesses the concordance between ICG-derived indexes used to evaluate left ventricular performance and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in hypertensive patients. Methods: In this IMPEDDANS post-hoc analysis, the ICG-derived indexes are compared with TTE by Bland-Altman method. Statistical significance of the relationship between the values obtained was assessed by generalized linear mixed-effects models. Results: In supine position, Bland-Altman analysis showed good concordance for cardiac output (CO) (mean difference of 0.006 mL/min [-0.120; 0.133]), cardiac index (CI) (mean difference of 0.016 mL/min/m2 [-0.471; 0.504]), pre-ejection period (PEP) (mean difference of -0.216 ms [-4.510; 4.077]), left ventricular ejection time (LVET) (mean difference of -0.140 ms [-6.573; 6.293]), and systolic time ratio (STR) (mean difference of -0.00004 [-0.008; 0.008]). In orthostatic position, good concordance was found for CO (mean difference 0.028 mL/min [-2.036; 1.980]), CI (mean difference -0.012 mL/min/m2 [-1.063; 1.039]), and STR (mean difference -0.101 [0.296; 0.094]). No significant difference between methods was identified by the linear mixed-effects models. Conclusion: The ICG-derived indexes CO, CI, PEP, LVET, and STR in supine position have good agreement with TTE.
