Mineralogy of soils with unusually high exchangeable Al from the western Amazon region.

    Get PDF
Some soils from the western Amazon region contain KCl-extractable Al contents 5 to 10 times greater than is typical for highly weathered soils containing predominantly kaolinite and gibbsite. We studied a soil sequence from the Brazilian western Amazon consisting of two Typic Udifluvents on the levee of the Javari River, onde Aeric Endoaquent in the backswamp, and two Typic Hapludults on an adjacent terrace

Clinical surveillance of thrombotic microangiopathies in Scotland, 2003-2005

The prevalence, incidence and outcomes of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura (TTP) are not well established in adults or children from prospective studies. We sought to identify both outcomes and current management strategies using prospective, national surveillance of HUS and TTP, from 2003 to 2005 inclusive. We also investigated the links between these disorders and factors implicated in the aetiology of HUS and TTP including infections, chemotherapy, and immunosuppression. Most cases of HUS were caused by verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC), of which serotype O157 predominated, although other serotypes were identified. The list of predisposing factors for TTP was more varied although use of immunosuppressive agents and severe sepsis, were the most frequent precipitants. The study demonstrates that while differentiating between HUS and TTP is sometimes difficult, in most cases the two syndromes have quite different predisposing factors and clinical parameters, enabling clinical and epidemiological profiling for these disorders

Coulomb and quantum oscillator problems in conical spaces with arbitrary dimensions

    Get PDF
The Schr\"odinger equations for the Coulomb and the Harmonic oscillator potentials are solved in the cosmic-string conical space-time. The spherical harmonics with angular deficit are introduced. The algebraic construction of the harmonic oscillator eigenfunctions is performed through the introduction of non-local ladder operators. By exploiting the hidden symmetry of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator the eigenvalues for the angular momentum operators in three dimensions are reproduced. A generalization for N-dimensions is performed for both Coulomb and harmonic oscillator problems in angular deficit space-times. It is thus established the connection among the states and energies of both problems in these topologically non-trivial space-times.Comment: 15 page

Fast soil solution nutrient and water dynamics in top- and subsoil.

Study for find out the short-term dynamics of applied fertilizer. In a soil pit a data logger system connected to tensiometers and TDR was installed up to a depth of 3.5m under pueraria in an agroforestry system (cupuacu, peach palm, Brazil nut, urucum). After a rainfall event, the soil water suction at 0.1m depth increased immediately, and fast responses were seen even up to a depth of 0.9m. This result may indicate that nutrients may be leached very fast even in these soil with high clay contents. The N concentrations in the soil solution relevantly increased at 0.1m depth during the same time period, as shown for peach palm. First, the ammonium concentrations increased, but nitrate contents followed rapidly indicanting a fast nitrification in the studied soils.bitstream/item/210595/1/Water-and-nutrient-p54.pd

Spatial variation in small scale of soil wetness evaluated by different methods.

Evaluations of dielectric constants E and samplings for the determination of ø and bulk density þm were carried out in four profiles of a Xanthic Ferralsol with high clay content (Latossolo Amarelao - Brazil Classification) at the Experimental Statation of Embrapa Amazonia Ocidental (Manaus, AM, Brazil). The sample were taken near the soil surface. Three undisturbed core samples and three disturbed auger samples were collected at each depth. The E was determined in advance at six points with the probe inserted vertically and three points horizontally in each depth. Results and discussion on: a) volume evaluated and probe orientation; b) topsoil and subsoil measurements; c) soil characteristics; and d) accuracy of empirical equations for the determination of soil wetness are presented.bitstream/item/181061/1/ID-2600-2-69-76.pd

The soil carbon under Amazonian forests has an important roles in global changing, making information on the soil content and depths of these stocks are considerable interest in efforts to quantify soil carbon emissions to the atmosphere. This study quantified the content and soil organic carbon stock under primary forest up to 2 m depth, at different topographic positions, at Cuieiras Biological Reserve, Manaus/ ZF2, km 34, in the Central Amazon, evaluating the soil attributes that may influence the permanence of soil carbon. Soil samples were collected along a transect of 850 m on topographic gradient Oxisol (plateau), Ultisol (slope) and Spodosol (valley). The stocks of soil carbon were obtained by multiplying the carbon content, soil bulk density and trickiness of soil layers. The watershed was delimited by using STRM and IKONOS images and the carbon contend obtained in the transects was extrapolated as a way to evaluate the potential for carbon stocks in an area of 2678.68 ha. The total SOC was greater in Oxisol followed by Spodosol and Ultisol. It was found direct correlations between the SOC and soil physical attributes. Among the clay soils (Oxisol and Ultisol), the largest stocks of carbon were observed in Oxisol at both the transect (90 to 175.5 Mg C ha-1) as the level of watershed (100.2 to 195.2 Mg C ha-1). The carbon stocks under sandy soil (Spodosol) was greater to clay soils along the transect (160-241 Mg C ha-1) and near them in the Watershed (96.90 to 146.01 Mg C ha-1)
