    Piggery: from environmental pollution to a climate change solution

    Pig farms are a vital component of rural economies in Australia. However, disposal of effluent leads to many environmental problems. This case study of the Berrybank Farm piggery waste management system in Victoria estimates greenhouse gas (GHG) benefits from three different activities. Analysis reveals that the capturing and combusting of methane from piggery effluent could save between 4859 and 5840 tCO2e yr−1 ofGHGemissions. Similarly, using methane for replacing fuels for electricity generation could save another 800 tCO2e/yr of GHGs. Likewise, by utilizing the biogas wastes to replace inorganic fertilizers there could be a further saving of 1193 to 1375 tCO2e yr−1 of GHG, depending on the type of fertilizers the waste replaces. Therefore, a well-managed piggery farm with 15,000 pigs could save 6,852 to 8,015 tCO2e/yr, which equates to the carbon sequestrated from 6,800 to 8,000 spotted gum trees (age = 35 year) in their above plus below-ground biomass. Implementation of similar project in suitable areas in Australia could have significant environmental and financial benefits

    Autopilot spatially-adaptive active contour parameterization for medical image segmentation

    In this work, a novel framework for automated, spatially-adaptive adjustment of active contour regularization and data fidelity parameters is proposed and applied for medical image segmentation. The proposed framework is tailored upon the isomorphism observed between these parameters and the eigenvalues of diffusion tensors. Since such eigenvalues reflect the diffusivity of edge regions, we embed this information in regularization and data fidelity parameters by means of entropy-based, spatially-adaptive `heatmaps'. The latter are able to repel an active contour from randomly directed edge regions and guide it towards structured ones. Experiments are conducted on endoscopic as well as mammographic images. The segmentation results demonstrate that the proposed framework bypasses iterations dedicated to false local minima associated with noise, artifacts and inhomogeneities, speeding up contour convergence, whereas it maintains a high segmentation quality

    An analysis of Australia's carbon pollution reduction scheme

    The authors review the decision-making since the Labour Government came into office (November 2007). The Australian Government’s ‘Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme’ White Paper (15 December 2008) proposes that an Australian Emissions Trading Scheme (AETS) be implemented in mid-2010. Acknowledging that the scheme is comprehensive, the paper finds that in many cases, Australia will take a softer approach to climate change through the AETS than the European Union ETS(EUETS). The paper assesses key issues in the White Paper such as emissions reduction targets, GHG coverage, sectoral coverage, inclusion of unlimited quantities of offsets from Kyoto international markets and exclusion of deforestation activities

    Mammary tuberculosis mimicking breast cancer: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>The incidence of tuberculosis is rising worldwide and rare manifestations of the past are seen more often nowadays. Mammary tuberculosis is a rare clinical entity, often mimicking breast cancer or abscesses of benign or malignant origin. Clinical awareness is necessary during diagnostic work-up for establishing the correct diagnosis and treatment.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present a case of breast tuberculosis diagnosed in a 73 year old woman at our institution. The patient presented with a palpable mass of the right breast with clinical, laboratory and mammographic findings indicative of breast carcinoma. The patient underwent lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy. Frozen section of the tumor and the sentinel node revealed "granulomatous inflammation", while gross examination confirmed the diagnosis of tuberculous mastitis. The patient received anti-tuberculosis therapy for six months with no side effects or any further complications.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Breast tuberculosis is an obscure disease often mistaken for carcinoma or pyogenic abscess of the breast, especially if well-defined clinical features are absent. A high index of suspicion is required because the disease can usually be treated conservatively with current antituberculous modalities while surgical intervention is reserved for rare cases only.</p

    The improved ARTEMIS IV multichannel solar radio spectrograph of the University of Athens

    We present the improved solar radio spectrograph of the University of Athens operating at the Thermopylae Satellite Telecommunication Station. Observations now cover the frequency range from 20 to 650 MHz. The spectrograph has a 7-meter moving parabola fed by a log-periodic antenna for 100 650 MHz and a stationary inverted V fat dipole antenna for the 20 100 MHz range. Two receivers are operating in parallel, one swept frequency for the whole range (10 spectrums/sec, 630 channels/spectrum) and one acousto-optical receiver for the range 270 to 450 MHz (100 spectrums/sec, 128 channels/spectrum). The data acquisition system consists of two PCs (equipped with 12 bit, 225 ksamples/sec ADC, one for each receiver). Sensitivity is about 3 SFU and 30 SFU in the 20 100 MHz and 100 650 MHz range respectively. The daily operation is fully automated: receiving universal time from a GPS, pointing the antenna to the sun, system calibration, starting and stopping the observations at preset times, data acquisition, and archiving on DVD. We can also control the whole system through modem or Internet. The instrument can be used either by itself or in conjunction with other instruments to study the onset and evolution of solar radio bursts and associated interplanetary phenomena.Comment: Experimental Astronomy, Volume 21, Issue 1, pp.41-5

    M3G: Maximum Margin Microarray Gridding

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Complementary DNA (cDNA) microarrays are a well established technology for studying gene expression. A microarray image is obtained by laser scanning a hybridized cDNA microarray, which consists of thousands of spots representing chains of cDNA sequences, arranged in a two-dimensional array. The separation of the spots into distinct cells is widely known as microarray image gridding.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this paper we propose M<sup>3</sup>G, a novel method for automatic gridding of cDNA microarray images based on the maximization of the margin between the rows and the columns of the spots. Initially the microarray image rotation is estimated and then a pre-processing algorithm is applied for a rough spot detection. In order to diminish the effect of artefacts, only a subset of the detected spots is selected by matching the distribution of the spot sizes to the normal distribution. Then, a set of grid lines is placed on the image in order to separate each pair of consecutive rows and columns of the selected spots. The optimal positioning of the lines is determined by maximizing the margin between these rows and columns by using a maximum margin linear classifier, effectively facilitating the localization of the spots.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The experimental evaluation was based on a reference set of microarray images containing more than two million spots in total. The results show that M<sup>3</sup>G outperforms state of the art methods, demonstrating robustness in the presence of noise and artefacts. More than 98% of the spots reside completely inside their respective grid cells, whereas the mean distance between the spot center and the grid cell center is 1.2 pixels.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The proposed method performs highly accurate gridding in the presence of noise and artefacts, while taking into account the input image rotation. Thus, it provides the potential of achieving perfect gridding for the vast majority of the spots.</p

    Getting Back on Track: Policy Solutions to Improve California Rail Transit Projects

    UC-ITS-2021-22This report combines a cost baseline analysis with five case studies of California rail projects (four local transit projects and California\u2019s High-Speed Rail project) to identify the causes of high project costs, slow deployment, and overruns/delays beyond initial project estimates. Baselines were developed from an analysis of two prominent transit cost databases, and case studies were developed through review of the historical record and expert interviews. Key findings include lack of transit agency experience and expertise; insufficient cross-agency coordination; costly stakeholder outreach; inefficient procurement and contracting methods; and project overdesign. The report proposes a set of recommendations for transit agencies and state policymakers to overcome these challenges, including the creation of regional project delivery consultant teams, legal authorization and use of alternative contracting methods, and new agency coordination and communication structures

    The Hellenic type of nondeletional hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin results from a novel mutation (g.-109G>T) in the HBG2 gene promoter

    Nondeletional hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (nd-HPFH), a rare hereditary condition resulting in elevated levels of fetal hemoglobin (Hb F) in adults, is associated with promoter mutations in the human fetal globin (HBG1 and HBG2) genes. In this paper, we report a novel type of nd-HPFH due to a HBG2 gene promoter mutation (HBG2:g.-109G>T). This mutation, located at the 3′ end of the HBG2 distal CCAAT box, was initially identified in an adult female subject of Central Greek origin and results in elevated Hb F levels (4.1%) and significantly increased Gγ-globin chain production (79.2%). Family studies and DNA analysis revealed that the HBG2:g.-109G>T mutation is also found in the family members in compound heterozygosity with the HBG2:g.-158C>T single nucleotide polymorphism or the silent HBB:g.-101C>T β-thalassemia mutation, resulting in the latter case in significantly elevated Hb F levels (14.3%). Electrophoretic mobility shift analysis revealed that the HBG2:g.-109G>T mutation abolishes a transcription factor binding site, consistent with previous observations using DNA footprinting analysis, suggesting that guanine at position HBG2/1:g.-109 is critical for NF-E3 binding. These data suggest that the HBG2:g-109G>T mutation has a functional role in increasing HBG2 transcription and is responsible for the HPFH phenotype observed in our index cases

    On the potential application of DFT methods in predicting the interaction-induced electric properties of molecular complexes. Molecular H-bonded chains as a case of study

    A detailed analysis of the selected DFT functionals for the calculations of interaction-induced dipole moment, polarizability and first-order hyperpolarizability has been carried out. The hydrogen-bonded model chains consisting of HF, H2CO and H3N molecules have been chosen as a case study. The calculations of the components of the static electric properties using the diffuse Dunning’s basis set (aug-cc-pVDZ) have been performed employing different types of density functionals (B3LYP, LC-BLYP, PBE0, M06-2X and CAM-B3LYP). Obtained results have been compared with those gained at the CCSD(T) level of theory. The counterpoise correction scheme, namely site-site function counterpoise, has been applied in order to eliminate basis set superposition error. The performed tests allow to conclude that the DFT functionals can provide a useful tool for prediction of the interaction-induced electric properties, however a caution has to be urged to their decomposition to the two- and many-body terms
