    From Small-Scale Dynamo to Isotropic MHD Turbulence

    We consider the problem of incompressible, forced, nonhelical, homogeneous, isotropic MHD turbulence with no mean magnetic field. This problem is essentially different from the case with externally imposed uniform mean field. There is no scale-by-scale equipartition between magnetic and kinetic energies as would be the case for the Alfven-wave turbulence. The isotropic MHD turbulence is the end state of the turbulent dynamo which generates folded fields with small-scale direction reversals.     Gas-phase oxidative dehydrogenation of long chain alkenols for the production of key fragrance ingredients: from Rosalva isomers to Costenal analogues

    The continuous-flow, gas-phase oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of an actual mixture of decen-1-ol isomers ("Isorosalva" alcohol) towards the corresponding mixture of aldehydes ("Costenal" analogues, valuable ingredients in perfumes formulation) is herein reported for the first time over noble metal-free catalysts. In particular, the optimisation of the reaction conditions over a copper ferrite (Cu/Fe/O), as well as dedicated characterizations and comparisons between the fresh, the post-reaction (reduced) and regenerated (re-oxidised) catalytic material, allowed us to underline the key role of well dispersed copper oxide over a Fe-enriched spinel in promoting the selective ODH of Isorosalva alcohol. The superior catalytic activity and selectivity of CuO/gamma-Fe2O3 synthesized ad hoc were attributed to the very high dispersion of Cu over the support as well as to a cooperative effect between Cu and Fe species in promoting the redox cycle

    Self-similar turbulent dynamo

    The amplification of magnetic fields in a highly conducting fluid is studied numerically. During growth, the magnetic field is spatially intermittent: it does not uniformly fill the volume, but is concentrated in long thin folded structures. Contrary to a commonly held view, intermittency of the folded field does not increase indefinitely throughout the growth stage if diffusion is present. Instead, as we show, the probability-density function (PDF) of the field strength becomes self-similar. The normalized moments increase with magnetic Prandtl number in a powerlike fashion. We argue that the self-similarity is to be expected with a finite flow scale and system size. In the nonlinear saturated state, intermittency is reduced and the PDF is exponential.     Interactive Training System for Interventional Electrocardiology Procedures

    International audienceRecent progress in cardiac catheterization and devices al-lowed to develop new therapies for severe cardiac diseases like arrhyth-mias and heart failure. The skills required for such interventions are still very challenging to learn, and typically acquired over several years. Vir-tual reality simulators can reduce this burden by allowing to practice such procedures without consequences on patients. In this paper, we propose the first training system dedicated to cardiac electrophysiology, includ-ing pacing and ablation procedures. Our framework involves an efficient GPU-based electrophysiological model. Thanks to an innovative mul-tithreading approach, we reach high computational performances that allow to account for user interactions in real-time. Based on a scenario of cardiac arrhythmia, we demonstrate the ability of the user-guided simulator to navigate inside vessels and cardiac cavities with a catheter and to reproduce an ablation procedure involving: extra-cellular poten-tial measurements, endocardial surface reconstruction, electrophysiology mapping, radio-frequency (RF) ablation, as well as electrical stimulation. This works is a step towards computerized medical learning curriculum

    Acute Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Cardiac Abnormalities: Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy or Neurogenic Stunned Myocardium? a case report

    Abstract Introduction Cardiac abnormalities can be seen with subarachnoid hemorrhage. To date, there have been isolated case reports of transient left ventricular apical ballooning cardiomyopathy, also known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in patients suffering from subarachnoid hemorrhage. Case presentation An adult female was brought to the emergency department with somnolence. A 3 × 3 mm ruptured basilar aneurysm was found and successfully embolized. Two days after the patient developed acute heart failure. Troponin-I was elevated to 4.2 (normal \u3c0.4). On ECG, new symmetric T wave inversion in V3, V4, V5 with prolonged QT were evident. Transthoracic echocardiogram showed severe systolic dysfunction with an ejection fraction of 20% and akinetic apex along with the distal left ventricular segments, consistent with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Myocardial contrast echocardiography showed a decrease in capillary blood flow and volume in the akinetic areas with delayed contrast replenishment, sparing the basal segments. A repeat study 2 weeks later showed near normalization of the perfusion parameters. The patient improved with medical management. A repeat echocardiogram, a month later revealed an ejection fraction of 45% with no identifiable wall motion abnormality. Conclusion Our case, as well as others reported previously, supports the diagnosis of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in patients with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage who fulfill the clinical and imaging description of this syndrome

    Obesity and its association to phenotype and clinical course in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

    ObjectivesThis study sought to assess the impact of body mass index (BMI) on cardiac phenotypic and clinical course in a multicenter hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) cohort.BackgroundIt is unresolved whether clinical variables promoting left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy in the general population, such as obesity, may influence cardiac phenotypic and clinical course in patients with HCM.MethodsIn 275 adult HCM patients (age 48 ± 14 years; 70% male), we assessed the relation of BMI to LV mass, determined by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and heart failure progression.ResultsAt multivariate analysis, BMI proved independently associated with the magnitude of hypertrophy: pre-obese and obese HCM patients (BMI 25 to 30 kg/m2 and >30 kg/m2, respectively) showed a 65% and 310% increased likelihood of an LV mass in the highest quartile (>120 g/m2), compared with normal weight patients (BMI <25 kg/m2; hazard ratio [HR]: 1.65; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.73 to 3.74, p = 0.22 and 3.1; 95% CI: 1.42 to 6.86, p = 0.004, respectively). Other features associated with LV mass >120 g/m2 were LV outflow obstruction (HR: 4.9; 95% CI: 2.4 to 9.8; p < 0.001), systemic hypertension (HR: 2.2; 95% CI: 1.1 to 4.5; p = 0.026), and male sex (HR: 2.1; 95% CI: 0.9 to 4.7; p = 0.083). During a median follow-up of 3.7 years (interquartile range: 2.5 to 5.3), obese patients showed an HR of 3.6 (95% CI: 1.2 to 10.7, p = 0.02) for developing New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class III to IV symptoms compared to nonobese patients, independent of outflow obstruction. Noticeably, the proportion of patients in NYHA functional class III at the end of follow-up was 13% among obese patients, compared with 6% among those of normal weight (p = 0.03).ConclusionsIn HCM patients, extrinsic factors such as obesity are independently associated with increase in LV mass and may dictate progression of heart failure symptoms

    Using XDAQ in Application Scenarios of the CMS Experiment

    XDAQ is a generic data acquisition software environment that emerged from a rich set of of use-cases encountered in the CMS experiment. They cover not the deployment for multiple sub-detectors and the operation of different processing and networking equipment as well as a distributed collaboration of users with different needs. The use of the software in various application scenarios demonstrated the viability of the approach. We discuss two applications, the tracker local DAQ system for front-end commissioning and the muon chamber validation system.     Cellular and ultrastructural characterization of the grey-morph phenotype in southern right whales (Eubalaena australis)

    Southern right whales (SRWs, Eubalena australis) are polymorphic for an X-linked pigmentation pattern known as grey morphism. Most SRWs have completely black skin with white patches on their bellies and occasionally on their backs; these patches remain white as the whale ages. Grey morphs (previously referred to as partial albinos) appear mostly white at birth, with a splattering of rounded black marks; but as the whales age, the white skin gradually changes to a brownish grey color. The cellular and developmental bases of grey morphism are not understood. Here we describe cellular and ultrastructural features of grey-morph skin in relation to that of normal, wild-type skin. Melanocytes were identified histologically and counted, and melanosomes were measured using transmission electron microscopy. Grey-morph skin had fewer melanocytes when compared to wild-type skin, suggesting reduced melanocyte survival, migration, or proliferation in these whales. Grey-morph melanocytes had smaller melanosomes relative to wild-type skin, normal transport of melanosomes to surrounding keratinocytes, and normal localization of melanin granules above the keratinocyte nuclei. These findings indicate that SRW grey-morph pigmentation patterns are caused by reduced numbers of melanocytes in the skin, as well as by reduced amounts of melanin production and/or reduced sizes of mature melanosomes. Grey morphism is distinct from piebaldism and albinism found in other species, which are genetic pigmentation conditions resulting from the local absence of melanocytes, or the inability to synthesize melanin, respectively

    New Eco-gas mixtures for the Extreme Energy Events MRPCs: results and plans

    The Extreme Energy Events observatory is an extended muon telescope array, covering more than 10 degrees both in latitude and longitude. Its 59 muon telescopes are equipped with tracking detectors based on Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber technology with time resolution of the order of a few hundred picoseconds. The recent restrictions on greenhouse gases demand studies for new gas mixtures in compliance with the relative requirements. Tetrafluoropropene is one of the candidates for tetrafluoroethane substitution, since it is characterized by a Global Warming Power around 300 times lower than the gas mixtures used up to now. Several mixtures have been tested, measuring efficiency curves, charge distributions, streamer fractions and time resolutions. Results are presented for the whole set of mixtures and operating conditions, %. A set of tests on a real EEE telescope, with cosmic muons, are being performed at the CERN-01 EEE telescope.
