Collective strong coupling between ion Coulomb crystals and an optical cavity field: Theory and experiment
A detailed description and theoretical analysis of experiments achieving
coherent coupling between an ion Coulomb crystal and an optical cavity field
are presented. The various methods used to measure the coherent coupling rate
between large ion Coulomb crystals in a linear quadrupole radiofrequency ion
trap and a single field mode of a moderately high-finesse cavity are described
in detail. Theoretical models based on a semiclassical approach are applied in
assessment of the experimental results of [P. F. Herskind et al., Nature Phys.
5, 494 (2009)] and of complementary new measurements. Generally, a very good
agreement between theory and experiments is obtained.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figure
Germanium Detector with Internal Amplification for Investigation of Rare Processes
Device of new type is suggested - germanium detector with internal
amplification. Such detector having effective threshold about 10 eV opens up
fresh opportunity for investigation of dark matter, measurement of neutrino
magnetic moment, of neutrino coherent scattering at nuclei and for study of
solar neutrino problem. Construction of germanium detector with internal
amplification and perspectives of its use are described.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 3 figures, report at NANP-99, International

Morning Increase in Onset of Ischemic Stroke
The Time of Onset of Ischemic Stroke Was Determined for 1,167 of 1,273 Patients during the Collection of Data by Four Academic Hospital Centers between June 30, 1983, and June 30, 1986. More Strokes Occurred in Awake Patients from 10:00 Am to Noon Than during Any Other 2-Hour Interval. the Incidence of Stroke Onset Declined Steadily during the Remainder of the Day and Early Evening. the Onset of Stroke is Least Likely to Occur in the Late Evening, Before Midnight. © 1989 American Heart Association, Inc
X-rays Studies of the Solar System
X-ray observatories contribute fundamental advances in Solar System studies
by probing Sun-object interactions, developing planet and satellite surface
composition maps, probing global magnetospheric dynamics, and tracking
astrochemical reactions. Despite these crucial results, the technological
limitations of current X-ray instruments hinder the overall scope and impact
for broader scientific application of X-ray observations both now and in the
coming decade. Implementation of modern advances in X-ray optics will provide
improvements in effective area, spatial resolution, and spectral resolution for
future instruments. These improvements will usher in a truly transformative era
of Solar System science through the study of X-ray emission.Comment: White paper submitted to Astro2020, the Astronomy and Astrophysics

HAPI: Hardware-Aware Progressive Inference
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently become the
state-of-the-art in a diversity of AI tasks. Despite their popularity, CNN
inference still comes at a high computational cost. A growing body of work aims
to alleviate this by exploiting the difference in the classification difficulty
among samples and early-exiting at different stages of the network.
Nevertheless, existing studies on early exiting have primarily focused on the
training scheme, without considering the use-case requirements or the
deployment platform. This work presents HAPI, a novel methodology for
generating high-performance early-exit networks by co-optimising the placement
of intermediate exits together with the early-exit strategy at inference time.
Furthermore, we propose an efficient design space exploration algorithm which
enables the faster traversal of a large number of alternative architectures and
generates the highest-performing design, tailored to the use-case requirements
and target hardware. Quantitative evaluation shows that our system consistently
outperforms alternative search mechanisms and state-of-the-art early-exit
schemes across various latency budgets. Moreover, it pushes further the
performance of highly optimised hand-crafted early-exit CNNs, delivering up to
5.11x speedup over lightweight models on imposed latency-driven SLAs for
embedded devices.Comment: Accepted at the 39th International Conference on Computer-Aided

Idaho National Laboratory Cultural Resource Management Office FY 2010 Activity Report
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Site is home to vast numbers and a wide variety of important cultural resources representing at least a 13,500 year span of human land use in the region. As a federal agency, the Department of Energy, Idaho Operations Office (DOE-ID) has legal responsibility for the management and protection of the resources and has contracted these responsibilities to Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA). The BEA professional staff is committed to maintaining a cultural resource management program that accepts the challenge of preserving INL cultural resources in a manner reflecting their importance in local, regional, and national history. This report summarizes activities performed by the INL Cultural Resource Management Office (CRMO) staff during fiscal year 2010. This work is diverse, far-reaching and though generally confined to INL cultural resource compliance, also includes a myriad of professional and voluntary community activities. This document is intended to be informative to both internal and external stakeholders and to serve as a planning tool for future INL cultural resource management work
Perspectives on Astrophysics Based on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Techniques
About two generations ago, a large part of AMO science was dominated by
experimental high energy collision studies and perturbative theoretical
methods. Since then, AMO science has undergone a transition and is now
dominated by quantum, ultracold, and ultrafast studies. But in the process, the
field has passed over the complexity that lies between these two extremes. Most
of the Universe resides in this intermediate region. We put forward that the
next frontier for AMO science is to explore the AMO complexity that describes
most of the Cosmos.Comment: White paper submission to the Decadal Assessment and Outlook Report

A Self-Consistent Model for Positronium Formation from Helium Atoms
The differential and total cross sections for electron capture by positrons
from helium atoms are calculated using a first-order distorted wave theory
satisfying the Coulomb boundary conditions. In this formalism a parametric
potential is used to describe the electron screening in a consistent and
realistic manner. The present procedure is self consistent because (i) it
satisfies the correct boundary conditions and post-prior symmetry, and (ii) the
potential and the electron binding energies appearing in the transition
amplitude are consistent with the wave functions describing the collision
system. The results are compared with the other theories and with the available
experimental measurements. At the considered range of collision energies, the
results agree reasonably well with recent experiments and theories.

A Standard Platform for Testing and Comparison of MDAO Architectures
The Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) community has developed a multitude of algorithms and techniques, called architectures, for performing optimizations on complex engineering systems which involve coupling between multiple discipline analyses. These architectures seek to efficiently handle optimizations with computationally expensive analyses including multiple disciplines. We propose a new testing procedure that can provide a quantitative and qualitative means of comparison among architectures. The proposed test procedure is implemented within the open source framework, OpenMDAO, and comparative results are presented for five well-known architectures: MDF, IDF, CO, BLISS, and BLISS-2000. We also demonstrate how using open source soft- ware development methods can allow the MDAO community to submit new problems and architectures to keep the test suite relevant
