Energy efficiency in production processes â the influence of consumption visualization and staff training
Part of:
Seliger, GĂŒnther (Ed.): Innovative solutions : proceedings / 11th Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing, Berlin, Germany, 23rd - 25th September, 2013. - Berlin: UniversitĂ€tsverlag der TU Berlin, 2013. - ISBN 978-3-7983-2609-5 (online). - http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:83-opus4-40276. - pp. 181â186.This paper examines the influence of the visualization of consumed compressed air and staff training on the consumption behavior of employees in a real production process. To measure potential changes in consumption behavior a real-effort experiment at the Training Factory for Energy Productivity, a real production setting at iwb of TUM, had been designed. Therefore, four groups were defined, each group in a different experimental setting. This experiment is the first one ever conducted in a real-life setting and thus adds valuable results to academia and practitioners. Compared to the group without any information about the amount of consumed compressed air the participants provided with a display showing this information saved on average 7-8%. The group provided with a movie about general measures to save compressed air in production consumed around 24% less compressed air than all other groups of participants. Generally, no significant differences between male and female participants had been found
Anisotropy and Mechanistic Elucidation of Wet-Chemical Gallium Nitride Etching at the Atomic Level
Etching of gallium nitride is a key step in the production of blue and white
light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Etching in aqueous KOH solution creates a rough
surface on the LED chip to facilitate outcoupling of the photons generated,
drastically increasing the resulting LEDâs efficiency. Compared with the common
technique of dry etching, wet-chemical etching using aqueous KOH solution
has significant advantages, e.g., lower complexity and cost and less remaining
surface damage. An in-depth analysis of the molecular etch reaction by characterization
of the reaction products is reported. The mechanism identified
explains the cause of anisotropic etching, which leads to the formation of
hexagonal pyramids. The concept of hydroxide repulsion by protruding NH
and NH2 groups established in the literature is adapted and further developed.
The susceptibility of several polar, semipolar, and nonpolar crystal facets may
also be explained, as well as the commonly observed increase in average pyramid
size over etch time.OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbHDeutsche ForschungsgemeinschaftMinisterio de Ciencia, InnovaciĂłn y Universidade
Tuning the Polarity of AntibioticâCy5 Conjugates Enables Highly Selective Labeling of Binding Sites
Multidrugâresistant bacteria pose a major threat to global health, even as newly introduced antibiotics continue to lose their therapeutic value. Against this background, deeper insights into bacterial interaction with antibiotic drugs are urgently required, whereas fluorescently labeled drug conjugates can serve as highly valuable tools. Herein, the preparation and biological evaluation of 13â
new fluorescent antibioticâCy5 dye conjugates is described, in which the tuning of the polarity of the Cy5 dye proved to be a key element to achieve highly favorable properties for various fields of application.A systematic study on 13 new antibioticâCy5 dye conjugates derived from ampicillin, erythromycin, trimethoprim, and vancomycin revealed that in particular the incorporation of Cy5 dyes of low polarity leads to significantly improved properties regarding photostability, optical brightness, and distinctiveness. In turn, the related conjugates could be identified as outstanding tools for a variety of studies including fluorescence and superâresolution spectroscopy, differentiation of Gram+/â bacteria and competition binding. image Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes

A Petri-net based approach for evaluating energy flexibility of production machines
Nowadays production systems are faced with new turbulences in energy-markets due to the increasing use of renewable energy sources. Therefore, production systems and their machines have to be energy flexible. This paper provides an approach for evaluating energy flexibility of production machines based on a Petri-net modelling of machine behaviour. Furthermore, an application of the evaluation on two different machines is given
