Psychologies of not Knowing: On the (Re)Production of Oppression via Processes of not Knowing or Ignorance

Social and liberation movements all over the world have acted on the premise that oppression is kept alive, among other ways, through psychological mechanisms. Feminist and critical race epistemologies such as “feminist standpoint theories” and “epistemological ignorance” suggest that there might be different forms of not knowing involved depending on the social location of the (not) knowing subject. In this paper we suggest that the concrete psychological mechanisms involved in not knowing or outright ignorance differ according to one’s position in the social fabric of oppression and privilege. Enthemmte Männer: Psychoanalytisch-sozialpsychologische Überlegungen zur Freudschen Massenpsychologie und zum Antifeminismus in der «Neuen» Rechten

In Freuds Massenpsychologie nimmt – anschließend an Le Bon – die Idee, dass der_die Einzelne in der Masse «enthemmt» werde, eine zent­rale Rol le ein. In diesem Beitrag wird dieser Figur genauer nachgegangen. Anhand einerseits des Nationalismus/Rassismus, andererseits des Antifeminismus der ‹Neuen› Rechten soll gezeigt werden, dass in sozialen Krisensituationen stark werdende «lärmende» Massenbewegungen stets an «stumme» Massenprozesse andocken, die in vorherrschende Sozialisationsprozesse eingelagert sind. Das ent­hemmende Moment der Massenbewegungen muss im Zusammenhang mit diesen gesellschaftlich hergestellten Dispositionen heraus verstanden werden können. Der Beitrag spürt der Entstehung von «Nationalgefühlen» ebenso nach wie der Entstehung einer männlichen Geschlechtsidentität unter Bedingungen männlicher Vorherrschaft und zeigt, dass in beide schon paranoide Wahrnehmungsstrukturen eingeschrieben sind, deren destruktives Potenzial sich in der «lärmenden» Mas­sen bewegung entladen kann. Der aktuell grassierende Antifeminismus oder Antigenderismus wird als aus dieser Disposition heraus entstehende, aggressive Reaktion auf gesellschaftliche Transformationsprozesse gelesen, welche bestehende Formen männlicher Vorherrschaft ins Wanken zu bringen drohen

The nonparametric Behrens-Fisher problem in small samples

While there appears to be a general consensus in the literature on the definition of the estimand and estimator associated with the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test, it seems somewhat less clear as to how best to estimate the variance. In addition to the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test, we review different proposals of variance estimators consistent under both the null hypothesis and the alternative. Moreover, in case of small sample sizes, an approximation of the distribution of the test statistic based on the t-distribution, a logit transformation and a permutation approach have been proposed. Focussing as well on different estimators of the degrees of freedom as regards the t-approximation, we carried out simulations for a range of scenarios, with results indicating that the performance of different variance estimators in terms of controlling the type I error rate largely depends on the heteroskedasticity pattern and the sample size allocation ratio, not on the specific type of distributions employed. Die englischsprachige Ausgabe von Marx for Beginners, einer in Comic-Form verfassten Einführung in das Leben und Werk von Karl Marx, war 1976 der Startschuss für ein neues Genre, das bis heute Hunderte von Büchern hervorgebracht hat: die sogenannten Comic-Sachbücher oder Graphic Guides, mit vielen Bildern illustrierte Theorieeinführungen. Dieser Aufsatz zeichnet nicht nur die Entstehung und Entwicklung der beiden wichtigsten, auseinander hervorgegangenen Serien dieses Genres, der "… for Beginners"- und der "Introducing"-Reihe nach, sondern widmet sich - vor dem Hintergrund theoretischer Überlegungen aus der Bildwissenschaft, Lorenzers Symboltheorie und der Comicforschung - zentral den Illustrationen in diesen Büchern und fragt nach dem spezifischen Erkenntnispotential, aber auch den Gefahrenpotentialen der mit seriellen Bildern versehenen Einführungswerke.Marx for Beginners, an introduction into the life and works of Karl Marx in the form of a comic that was published in 1976, was the starting point for a new genre that has brought about hundreds of books to this day: so-called graphic guides, i.e., theory introductions that are illustrated with a great many images. This paper traces the inception and development of the two most significant series in this genre, "... for Beginners" and "Introducing...", and focuses on the illustrations in these books from the perspective of both Lorenzer's symbol theory and comic theory. It inquires the specifically pictorial potential of these images for knowledge production and transfer while at the same time considering the problematic inherent in these introductions that work with serial images

Damage evolution in wood – pattern recognition based on acoustic emission (AE) frequency spectra

Tensile tests of miniature spruce wood specimens have been performed to investigate the damage evolution in wood at the microscopic scale. For this purpose, the samples were stepwise tensile loaded in the longitudinal (L) and radial (R) directions and the damage evolution was monitored in real-time by acoustic emission (AE) and synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography (SRμCT). This combination is of outstanding benefit as SRμCT monitoring provides an insight on the crack evolution and the final fracture at microscopic scale, whereas AE permits the detection of the associated accumulation and interaction of single damage events on all length scales with high time resolution. A significant drawback of the AE testing of wood has been overcome by means of calibrating the AE amplitudes with the underlying crack length development. Thus, a setup-dependent and wood species-dependent calibration value was estimated, which associates 1 μm
