    This chapter argues for an interpretation of Kant's psychology of moral evil that accommodates the so-called excluded middle cases and allows for variations in the magnitude of evil. The strategy involves distinguishing Kant's transcendental psychology from his empirical psychology and arguing that Kant's character rigorism is restricted to the transcendental level. The chapter also explains how Kant's theory of moral evil accommodates 'the badass'; someone who does evil for evil's sake

    Emotions can be understood generally from two different perspectives: (i) a third-person perspective that specifies their distinctive functional role within our overall cognitive economy and (ii) a first-person perspective that attempts to capture their distinctive phenomenal character, the subjective quality of experiencing them. One emotion that is of central importance in many ethical systems is respect (in the sense of respect for persons or so-called recognition-respect). However, discussions of respect in analytic moral philosophy have tended to focus almost entirely on its functional role, in particular the behaviors that respect disposes us to engage in (or refrain from). Here we wish to investigate the phenomenal character of respect, what it is like to feel respect for persons. Since Kant is the reference point for modern discussions of respect, we try to reconstruct Kant’s account of the phenomenology of respect, but also endeavor to refine his account in light of our own phenomenological observations

    The proximal-to-distal force transfer of the kinetic chain in overarm throwing has well-established movements. The nature of the transfer of momentum from the lower trunk to the shoulder during an overarm throw remains to be determined. This study explored correlations between angular momentum about the superior-inferior axis of the lower trunk and compressive and anterior shear forces at the shoulder in experienced baseball players as they made maximum effort throws from the outfield. We found no association between the maximum lower trunk angular momentum during the arm cocking phase and shoulder joint anterior shear force at ball release (r = 0.149, p = 0.244, 95% CI [0.165, 0.133]) or shoulder joint compressive force at ball release (r = 0.222, p = 0.149, 95% CI [0.226, 0.218]).     A preliminary design for a satellite power system

    Outlined here is a preliminary design for a Solar Power Satellite (SPS) system. The SPS will provide a clean, reliable source of energy for mass consumption. The system will use satellites in geostationary orbits around the Earth to capture the sun's energy. The intercepted sunlight will be converted to laser beam energy which can be transmitted to the Earth's surface. Ground systems on the Earth will convert the transmissions from space into electric power. The preliminary design for the SPS consists of one satellite in orbit around the Earth transmitting to one ground station. The SPs technology uses multi-layer solar cell technology arranged on a 20 sq km planar array to intercept sunlight and convert it to an electric voltage. Power conditioning devices then send the electricity to a laser, which transmits the power to the surface of the Earth. A ground station will convert the beam into electricity. Construction will take place in low Earth orbit and array sections, 20 in total, will be sailed on the solar wind out to the GEO location in 150 days. These individual transportation sections are referred to as solar sailing panels (SSAPs). The primary truss elements used to support the arrays are composed on composite tubular members in a pentahedral arrangement. Smart segments consisting of passive and active damping devices will increase the control of dynamic SPS modes

    The feasibility of nurse-delivered, low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy for irritable bowel syndrome.

    Introduction: This study assessed the feasibility of nurse-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Methods and analysis: A mixed-method design was used, and 20 participants were randomly allocated to high-intensity CBT (n=5), guided self-help (n=5), self-help only (n=5) or treatment as usual (n=5). Ten intervention participants completed semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics; qualitative data were analysed using group thematic analysis. Results: Barriers to the interventions were lack of therapist contact, negative preconceptions about treatment and factors relating to supporting materials. Treatment facilitators included therapist-facilitated relaxation, narratives located within self-help materials and social support mechanisms. Conclusion: Further development of the low-intensity interventions in collaboration with service users is required to improve intervention acceptability and relevance.N/

    Assessment of commercially available computerized neurocognitive testing in the adolescent concussed athlete: A retrospective analysis.

    Background: Clinicians frequently use computer-based neurocognitive assessments to aid in the diagnosis and management of Sport Related Concussion (SRC). With practitioners using varied Neuro-Cognitive Assessment Tools (NCAT), questions arise concerning among NCAT and how these differences may affect patient care. The purpose of the current study is to offer a comparative analysis of two widely accepted, commercially available computer-based neurocognitive testing modalities in the adolescent concussed athlete. Hypothesis: There will be a difference between the C3 Logix® vs ImPACT® scoring in the IRPT and RTP Study Design: Retrospective chart review. Methods: In order to identify patients that were diagnosed with SRC, the records of patients reporting to a Sports Medicine practice were reviewed from a period of 18 months. All patients were assessed with either the ImPACT® or C3 Logix NCAT®. The date of the injury (DOI) as well as the patient’s symptom level (IVAL), time to initiation of the return to play protocol (IRTP), and time to the return to play (RTP) were recorded. Results: Two hundred and twenty-two records (222) were identified. There was no difference in the symptom score (P = 0.22) at the IEVAL between C3 Logix® (31.5±27.0) and ImPACT® (23.2±21.9), in the IRTP (P = 0.22) between the C3 Logix® (6.2±4.3 days) and ImPACT® (5.1±4.3 days) or RTP (P = 0.46) between C3 Logix (12.1±4.9 days) and ImPACT (15.6±19.8 days). Weak to moderate correlations were found between symptom scores, IRTP, and RTP. Conclusions: Clinicians made similar recommendations, independent of the NCAT used, as when to initiate the return to play protocol and when the patient could ultimately return to play. Clinical Relevance: The particular NCAT utilized by clinician was not a primary factor in the clinical judgement towards the management of the patient with SRC

    ‘Ear stones’ in crocodylians: a cross-species comparative and ontogenetic survey of otolith structures

    The vestibular system of the inner ear is a crucial sensory organ, involved in the sensation of balance and equilibrium. It consists of three semicircular canals that sense angular rotations of the head and the vestibule that detects linear acceleration and gravity. The vestibule often contains structures, known as the otoliths or ‘ear stones’. Otoliths are present in many vertebrates and are particularly well known from the fossil record of fish, but surprisingly have not been described in detail in most tetrapods, living or extinct. Here, we present for the first time a survey of the otoliths of a broad sample of extant crocodylian species, based on computed tomography scans. We find that otoliths are present in numerous crocodylian species of different growth stages, and they continue to increase in size during ontogeny, with positive allometry compared to skull length. Our results confirm that otoliths are a common component of the crocodylian vestibular system, and suggest they play an important role in sensory detection. Otoliths are likely common, but overlooked, constituents of the inner ear in tetrapods, and a broader study of their size, shape and distribution promises insight into sensory abilities
