    Characterizing a benchmark scenario for heavy Higgs boson searches in the Georgi-Machacek model

    The Georgi-Machacek model is used to motivate and interpret LHC searches for doubly- and singly-charged Higgs bosons decaying into vector boson pairs. In this paper we study the constraints on and phenomenology of the "H5plane" benchmark scenario in the Georgi-Machacek model, which has been proposed for use in these searches. We show that the entire H5plane benchmark is compatible with the LHC measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs boson couplings. We also point out that, over much of the H5plane benchmark, the lineshapes of the two CP-even neutral heavy Higgs bosons HH and H50H_5^0 will overlap and interfere when produced in vector boson fusion with decays to W+W−W^+W^- or ZZZZ. Finally we compute the decay branching ratios of the additional heavy Higgs bosons within the H5plane benchmark to facilitate the development of search strategies for these additional particles.Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures. v2: title changed, refs added, discussion clarified, version accepted by PR

    Thoracic CT in the ED: a study of thoracic computed tomography utilisation.

    The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the use of thoracic Computed Tomography (CT) in the Emergency Department of a Dublin Academic Teaching Hospital over a six month period. Data was retrieved using the hospital\u27s computerised information system. There were 202 referrals in total for thoracic CT from the Emergency Department during this time period. The most common indication for thoracic CT referral was for the investigation of pulmonary embolism with 127 (63%) referrals. There were 40 (25%) referrals for suspected malignancy and lung disease, whilst 8 (4%) of the referrals were for investigation of thoracic aortic dissection, 8 (4%) for infection, and 6 (3%) were for investigation of thoracic injury. Only 8 (4%) of all referrals were for investigation of injury as a result of chest trauma

    Creating a Learning Environment to Increase Early Adolescent Motivation: A Dissertation

    This study focuses on early adolescent motivation in school. It is an inquiry that seeks to understand the factors that contribute to students’ engagement in their learning through student and teacher perceptions. I examined significant research often cited as impacting motivation, including early adolescent development, middle school structures, transitions, student/teacher relationships, and parental involvement. I surveyed 345 sixth grade students on their perceptions of their own learning, thoughts, and behaviors. Participating students attended schools with various middle school age configurations, including K-8, K-12, 5-8, and 6-8. Schools represented public and charter public schools and were located in urban, suburban, and rural areas in Massachusetts. Based upon survey responses, I interviewed eight highly motivated students and eight low motivated students to further examine factors impacting their learning. These findings guided the development of a questionnaire to understand teachers’ perceptions of their students’ motivational and engagement levels and factors. Finally, I examined the relationship between cognitive neuroscience and early adolescent motivation. The results of the study show a number of factors impact motivation and engagement during the early adolescent years, specifically related to students’ experiences, thoughts, and behaviors. The most influential of these dynamics included transitions, learning experiences, teacher relationships, parent relationships, and stress, anxiety, and coping skills. Brain development research shows a clear relationship between the factors impacting motivation and the biological changes occurring in early adolescents. These findings direct a critical discussion of how school leaders can create learning environments to proactively address motivational and engagement issues often faced by early adolescents

    Acne vulgaris, mental health and omega-3 fatty acids: a report of cases

    Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition, one that is associated with significant psychological disability. The psychological impairments in acne include higher rates of depression, anxiety, anger and suicidal thoughts. Despite a paucity of clinical research, patients with skin conditions and/or mental health disorders are frequent consumers of dietary supplements. An overlap may exist between nutrients that potentially have both anti-acne and mood regulating properties; examples include omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, chromium, zinc and selenium. Here we report on five cases of acne treated with eicosapentaenoic acid and antioxidant nutrients. Self-administration of these nutrients may have improved inflammatory acne lesions and global aspects of well-being; the observations suggest a need for controlled trials
