    Land Preservation: An Essential Ingredient in Smart Growth

    The preservation of land for working rural landscapes, wildlife habitat, urban parks, recreational trails, and protecting water supplies and floodplains is emerging as an integral component of smart growth programs. Both the general public and nonprofit organizations have been willing to spend billions of dollars on land preservation because of a perception that traditional land use planning and regulation are not successfully accommodating growth or protecting valuable natural resources. The literature on smart growth has largely overlooked the potential of land preservation to curb sprawl and to foster livable communities. The literature on land preservation has focused on the mechanics of conservation easements and land purchases rather than on how land preservation can fit in the comprehensive planning process to achieve community smart growth goals. More research needs to be done on the strategic use of land preservation in shaping and directing growth as part of a comprehensive planning effort

    Human derived feeder fibroblasts for the culture of epithelial cells for clinical use

    Aim: To investigate human oral mucosal fibroblasts (HOMF) and human limbal fibroblasts (HLF) as alternatives to murine 3T3 feeder fibroblasts currently used to support epithelial cell expansion for the treatment of limbal epithelial stem cell deficiency. Methods: HLF and HOMF were compared to 3T3 for their ability to support the culture of human limbal epithelial cells (HLE) and human oral mucosal epithelial cells. Results: HOMF, but not HLF, were equivalent to 3T3 in terms of the number of epithelial population doublings achieved. HLE co-cultured with HOMF or 3T3 had similar expression of corneal and putative stem cell markers. Conclusion: HOMF are a suitable and safer feeder fibroblast alternative to 3T3 for the production of epithelial cells for clinical use

    Using a Diverse Seed Mix to Establish Native Plants on a Sonoran Desert Burn

    Revegetating burned areas is a formidable challenge facing resource managers in southwestern United States arid lands. Natural revegetation of desert burns by native species may be slow, or dominated by exotic annual grasses that perpetuate a frequent-fire regime. Resource managers may have several reasons for actively revegetating burns with native species, such as for providing competition with exotic species, minimizing soil erosion and dust pollution, and improving aesthetics. The use of native species in revegetation has been limited by a lack of available seed and by findings that native desert species are difficult to establish (e.g., Bainbridge and Virginia 1990, Banjerjee et al. 2006). Seeding may be one of only a few feasible options for reintroducing propagules to large desert burns covering thousands of hectares.     Native plants dominate understory vegetation following ponderosa pine forest restoration treatments

    Dense ponderosa pine forests in the southwestern United States inhibit understory production and diversity and are susceptible to high-severity wildfire. Restoration treatments involving overstory thinning and prescribed burning are being implemented to increase understory productivity and diversity and to reduce the risk of severe wildfire. However, disturbances associated with treatments may favor invasion of nonnative species, and the severity of the disturbance may be related to the level of nonnative species establishment. We examined understory community composition, species richness, and plant cover responses to 3 stand-scale replicates of 4 different tree-thinning intensities. Restoration treatments altered the composition of the understory community regardless of thinning intensity. Understory richness and cover were highly variable among experimental blocks, but we observed strong trends of increasing richness and cover in the treated stands. Immediately following restoration treatments, nonnative species cover comprised 6% of the total cover where treatment-induced disturbances were the greatest. However, the initial increase in nonnative species did not persist and was reduced by half 6 years after treatment. Plant community composition was still in flux by the sixth year after treatment, indicating that continued monitoring is necessary for evaluating whether restoration targets are maintained over time

    A review of selected research priority setting processes at national level in low and middle income countries: towards fair and legitimate priority setting

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is estimated that more than $130 billion is invested globally into health research each year. Increasingly, there is a need to set priorities in health research investments in a fair and legitimate way, using a sound and transparent methodology. In this paper we review selected priority setting processes at national level in low and middle income countries. We outline a set of criteria to assess the process of research priority setting and use these to describe and evaluate priority setting exercises that have taken place at country level. Based on these insights, recommendations are made regarding the constituents of a good priority setting process.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were gathered from presentations at a meeting held at the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2008 and a web-based search. Based on this literature review a number of criteria were developed to evaluate the priority setting processes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Across the countries surveyed there was a relative lack of genuine stakeholder engagement; countries varied markedly in the extent to which the priority setting processes were documented; none of the countries surveyed had a systematic or operational appeals process for outlined priorities; and in all countries (except South Africa) the priorities that were outlined described broad disease categories rather than specific research questions.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Country level priority setting processes differed significantly in terms of the methods used. We argue that priority setting processes must have in-built mechanisms for publicizing results, effective procedures to enforce decisions as well as processes to ensure that the revision of priorities happens in practice.</p

    Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Cavernous Sinus 187

    The magnetic resonance (MR) appearance of the cavernous sinus was studied by correlating the MR images of normal volunteers and cryomicrotomic sections from six cadavers. In addition, MR images of patients with parasellar masses were compared with corresponding intravenously enhanced computed tomographic (CT) scans. The MR appearance of the cranial nerves in the cavernous sinuses is demonstrated, as well as MR signs of a parasellar mass, including obliteration of intracavernous venous spaces, displacement of the intracavernous internal carotid artery, and bulging of the lateral wall of the cavernus sinus. MR proved to be more effective than CT in delineating the parts of the cavernous sinus. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has the potential to demonstrate the intracavernous segments of cranial nerves in contrast to the negligible signals of flowing blood. Our article describes the normal MR appearance of the cavernous sinuses and the MR signs of cavernous sinus lesions. Materials and Methods Six fresh frozen cadaver heads were embedded in styrofoam boxes with a solution of carboxymethyl cellulose gel. The orbitomeatal lines and sellae turcicae were identified with fluoroscopy. With a horizontally cutting heavy-duty sledge cryomicrotome (LKB 2250) and serial photography of the surfaces of the specimens (1), anatomic images of the cavernous sinuses were obtained in planes parallel or perpendicular to the orbitomeatal line. In the anatomic images, the intracavernous segments of cranial nerves III-VI and of the internal carotid arteries (ICAs) were identified using published anatomic, computed tomographic (CT), and MR literature (2-6). A group of seven normal volunteers and 15 patients were chosen for MR imaging. The patients included two with pituitary adenomas involving cavernous sinuses and one with a parasellar aneurysm . The diagnoses were verified with conventional clinical, CT , angiographic, and surgical (two cases) findings . The volunteers and patients were studied in prototype 1.3, 1.4, or 1.5 T General Electric MR scanners. Initially , a partial saturation (PS) sagittal image was used to determine locations for axial and coronal PS , inversion recovery (IR ), and spin-echo (SE) imaging .     Traffic related noise and air quality valuations: evidence from stated preference residential choice models

    This paper reports on research which has estimated valuations of changes in traffic related noise levels and air quality and which contributes to the body of knowledge and to methodology in this area. There are several novel aspects of this research. Firstly, there have been relatively few stated preference studies of the monetary valuations of traffic related noise and air quality. A feature of this analysis is the examination of variations in values according to the size and sign of the environmental change, the currently experienced level of the attribute and various socio-economic factors. Secondly, the important issue of presentation is addressed, with two different methods used in the valuation of air quality and links made between valuations and physical measures. Thirdly, the results from stated preference and the contingent valuation method are compared. Finally, we bring together evidence from other studies and compare them with the findings obtained here

    Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening Decision Making Processes

    Introduction: Although shared decision making is recommended for cancer screening, it is not routinely completed in practice because of time constraints. We evaluated a process for improving decision making about colorectal cancer (CRC) screening using mailed decision aids (DA) with follow-up telephone support in primary care practices. Methods: We identified patients aged 50-75 who were not up to date with CRC screening in three primary care practices. DA were distributed via mail with telephone follow-up to eligible patients, and charts were reviewed six months later for CRC screening completion. Results: Among 1,064 eligible patients who received the mailed DA, 513 (48.2%) were reached by phone. During the six months after the intervention, 148/1064 (13.9%) patients were screened for CRC (4.8% underwent FIT, 9.1% underwent colonoscopy). Younger patients (aged 50-54) had higher rates of any screening (32.4%) compared with all other age groups (range 12.8%-19.6%), p=0.026, while Medicaid patients had the lowest rates of screening (4.0%), and insured patients had the highest rates (45.3%), p=0.003. Overall, 113/513 (22.0%) who were reached by phone went on to complete screening within 6 months, compared with 35/551 (6.4%) of patients who were not reached by phone (p Conclusion: A standard process for identifying patients unscreened for CRC and DA distribution via mail with telephone decision support modestly increased CRC screening and is consistent with the goal of providing preference-sensitive care and informed decision making. Improving care processes to include decision support outside of office visits is possible in primary care practices

    Increasing the Rate of Magnesium Intercalation Underneath Epitaxial Graphene on 6H-SiC(0001)

    Magnesium intercalated 'quasi-freestanding' bilayer graphene on 6H-SiC(0001) (Mg-QFSBLG) has many favorable properties (e.g., highly n-type doped, relatively stable in ambient conditions). However, intercalation of Mg underneath monolayer graphene is challenging, requiring multiple intercalation steps. Here, we overcome these challenges and subsequently increase the rate of Mg intercalation by laser patterning (ablating) the graphene to form micron-sized discontinuities. We then use low energy electron diffraction to verify Mg-intercalation and conversion to Mg-QFSBLG, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to determine the Mg intercalation rate for patterned and non-patterned samples. By modeling Mg intercalation with the Verhulst equation, we find that the intercalation rate increase for the patterned sample is 4.5±\pm1.7. Since the edge length of the patterned sample is ≈\approx5.2 times that of the non-patterned sample, the model implies that the increased intercalation rate is proportional to the increase in edge length. Moreover, Mg intercalation likely begins at graphene discontinuities in pristine samples (not step edges or flat terraces), where the 2D-like crystal growth of Mg-silicide proceeds. Our laser patterning technique may enable the rapid intercalation of other atomic or molecular species, thereby expanding upon the library of intercalants used to modify the characteristics of graphene, or other 2D materials and heterostructures.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figure
