    Book Review--Global Dimensions of Intellectual Property Rights in Science and Technology

    A complete reading of the book leaves open the question of for whom the book is primarily intended. The best answer perhaps is that it has something to offer everyone--lawyer, scientist, intellectual property owner, economist, and politician--having an intellectual curiosity in how global intellectual property systems can and should evolve. From an individual reader\u27s perspective, a cover to cover study of the book may leave the reader feeling overwhelmed and unsatisfied. However, if viewed as a resource, from which portions applicable to the reader\u27s own field of interest are selected for close examination, the book has much to offer. Fortunately, the editors have done an admirable job of organizing the separate contributions that facilitates use of the book in this manner

    A Fistful of Polemoniaceae: New Names and Combinations

    New taxa, names, and combinations are provided for five genera in Polemoniaceae: Dayia, Giliastrum, Leptosiphon, Linanthus, and Loeselia. Combinations include the transfer to Dayia of two species formerly included in Ipomopsis and one in Bryantiella (Dayia glutinosa, D. havardii, and D. sonorae), as well as the return of Giliastrum stewartii to species rank. A new name is offered for Linanthus aureus when transferred into Leptosiphon: Leptosiphon chrysanthus and its subspecies, L. chrysanthus subsp. decorus. New combinations for infraspecific taxa are made available for Linanthus californicus (subspp. glandulosus and tomentosus) and L. pungens (subspp. hookeri, pulchriflorus, and hallii). New subspecies are described for Linanthus bigelovii (subsp. johnsonii), L. dichotomus (subsp. pattersonii), L. maculatus (subsp. emaculatus), L. watsonii (subspp. laccolithicus and dolomiticus), and Loeselia glandulosa (subsp. sonorae). Linanthus maricopensis is described as new. In addition, 10 lectotypes are designated, associated with Dayia, Leptosiphon, and Linanthus

    Errors of Measurement for Blood Parameters and Physiological and Performance Measures After the Decay of Short-Term Heat Acclimation

    Introduction: It is important to determine the accuracy of measurements relative to potential treatment effects, with time intervals between tests. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the error of measurement for blood parameters, physiological, and performance measures after the decay of short-term heat acclimation. Methods: Ten trained males (Mean±SD: age 28±7 y; body mass 74.6±4.4 kg; 4.26±0.37 L.min-1; peak power output (PPO) 329±42 W) completed an exercising heat stress test (HST) at baseline, 2nd day after acclimation and then during decay at 1, 2, 3 and 5-6 wks. CoV (95% CI), SE (95% CI) and Pearsons (r) were used for analysis of blood volume (blood, plasma, red cell volume, mean hemoglogin mass); plasma (aldosterone, arginine vasopressin [AVP], total protein, albumin, sodium); physiological (rectal temperature, cardiac frequency) and performance (exercise performance capacity, PPO). Results: The CoV (95% CI), SE (95% CI) and r with a 1-wk interval for blood volume was 2.3% (1.6 to 4.3; 1.9 [1.3 to 3.4 mL.Kg-1]; r=0.93; n=10). After 2-wk and 5-6 wks this had increased to 4.9% (3.4 to 9.3; 3.8 [2.6 to 7.0 mL.Kg-1]; r=0.76; n=9) and 5.5% (3.6 to 12.8; 4.5 [2.9 to 10.0 mL.Kg-1]; r=0.65; n=7) respectively. Conclusions: Blood volume and physiological measures demonstrated the least error one week apart but increased thereafter. Plasma concentrations and performance markers had the greatest error with repeat measures after one week. Therefore, for greater reliability and low measurement error measures should be taken no more than one week a part in repeated experimentation

    Diversity and Dispersal Among Eastern Continental Divide Headwater Stream Fishes in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

    The eastern continental divide that bisects Georgia runs through Gwinnett County, separating headwater streams of the western Chattahoochee River watershed from headwater streams of the eastern Ocmulgee and Oconee River watersheds. This landscape feature was used to test hypotheses regarding headwater habitat, fish diversity and gene flow. Headwater habitats are dominant components of river network ecosystems delivering vital ecosystem services and biodiversity. Three headwater streams, one in the Chattahoochee watershed and two in the Oconee watershed, on Gwinnett County Park property, were sampled for differences in physical and chemical properties and fish inter- and intraspecific diversity. Our results suggest the headwater habitats are each distinguished by unique physical and temporal features. Initial hypotheses regarding expectations of fish diversity based on habitat type were not supported. However, hypotheses regarding the impact of gene flow on genetic diversity among headwater stream species were supported. Gene flow estimates and phylogenetic analyses among three well-sampled species observed in these headwater streams, Semotilus atromaculatus, Notropis lutipinnis, and Nocomis leptocephalus, suggest the Eastern Continental Divide acts as a barrier for gene flow for some species. Our findings highlight a proposed methodology for headwater stream analysis that combines habitat heterogeneity with community and species-level measures of diversity
