Noncontact temperature pattern measuring device
Laser pyrometer techniques are utilized to accurately image a true temperature distribution on a given target without touching the target and without knowing the localized emissivity of the target. The pyrometer utilizes a very high definition laser beam and photodetector, both having a very narrow focus. The pyrometer is mounted in a mechanism designed to permit the pyrometer to be aimed and focused at precise localized points on the target surface. The pyrometer is swept over the surface area to be imaged, temperature measurements being taken at each point of focus

SWI/SNF (BAF) chromatin remodelling complexes are key regulators of gene expression programs, and attractive drug targets for cancer therapies. Here we show that the N-terminus of the BAF155/SMARCC1 subunit contains a putative DNA-binding MarR-like domain, a chromodomain and a BRCT domain that are interconnected to each other to form a distinct module. In this structure the chromodomain makes interdomain interactions and has lost its canonical function to bind to methylated lysines. The structure provides new insights into the missense mutations that target this module in cancer. This study also reveals two adjacent, highly-conserved pockets in a cleft between the domains that form a potential binding site, which can be targeted with small molecules, offering a new strategy to target SWI/SNF complexes

Casimir Invariants for Systems Undergoing Collective Motion
Dicke states are states of a collection of particles which have been under
active investigation for several reasons. One reason is that the decay rates of
these states can be quite different from a set of independently evolving
particles. Another reason is that a particular class of these states are
decoherence-free or noiseless with respect to a set of errors. These noiseless
states, or more generally subsystems, can avoid certain types of errors in
quantum information processing devices. Here we provide a method for
calculating invariants of systems of particles undergoing collective motions.
These invariants can be used to determine a complete set of commuting
observables for a class of Dicke states as well as identify possible logical
operations for decoherence-free/noiseless subsystems. Our method is quite
general and provides results for cases where the constituent particles have
more than two internal states.Comment: 5 page
Sequential comparison of tiotropium to high-dose ipratropium in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a practice setting

Spirometric values were obtained within 2 days of the change in medication and after 56 to 224 days of the switch to tiotropium.Results: 15 subjects were documented to have filled a prescription for ipratropium-containing medications the month prior to the change. Medication compliance over the 6 months prior to the switch in these patients was 72% ± 31% (mean ± SD) for ipratropium compared to 87% ± 14% for tiotropium over the 6-month period after the switch (P = 0.1). FEV1 improved from 1.12 ± 0.39 L at baseline to 1.37 ± 0.49 L after the change to tiotropium (P = 0.01). FVC also improved from 2.45 ± 0.73 L at baseline to 2.72 ± 0.69 L after the change (P = 0.04). Maximal voluntary ventilation was also increased from 39.67 ± 10.7 L/min to 45.13 ± 15.8 L/min (P = 0.045).Conclusions: We conclude that replacing high-dose ipratropium with tiotropium therapy significantly improves pulmonary function in a clinical setting.Keywords: ipratropium, tiotropium, COPD, pulmonary function, exacerbation rat
Exit plane H2O concentration measurements correlated with OH PLIF near-injector mixing measurements for scramjet flows
Mixing and combusting high enthalpy flows, similar to those encountered in scramjet engines, were investigated using a shock tunnel to produce the flow in conjunction with non-intrusive optical diagnostics which monitored the performance of two injector configurations. The shock tunnel is configured to produce Mach 3 flow and stagnation enthalpies corresponding to flight equivalent Mach numbers between 7 and 11. A pulsed hydrogen injection capability and interchangeable injector blocks provide a means of examining high speed, high enthalpy reacting flows. Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) of OH molecules in the near injector region produced images which show the combusting and mixing zones for the reacting flow. Line-of-sight exit plane measurement of water concentration and temperature were used to provide a unique method of monitoring exit plane products. These results demonstrated that a velocity matched axial injection system produced a fuel jet that lifted off the floor of the duct. Mixing was observed to increase for this system as a velocity mismatch was introduced. Comparison of exit plane water concentrations for a wall jet injection system and a velocity matched injection system indicated similar mixing performance but an accurate pressure measurement is necessary to further validate the result. In addition, exit plane measurements indicated an approximate steady-state condition was achieved during the 1 to 2 ms test times
A high-resolution structure of the EF-hand domain of human polycystin-2.
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) affects over 1:1000 of the worldwide population and is caused by mutations in two genes, PKD1 and PKD2. PKD2 encodes a 968-amino acid membrane spanning protein, Polycystin-2 (PC-2), which is a member of the TRP ion channel family. The C-terminal cytoplasmic tail contains an EF-hand motif followed by a short coiled-coil domain. We have determined the structure of the EF-hand region of PC-2 using NMR spectroscopy. The use of different boundaries, compared with those used in previous studies, have enabled us to determine a high resolution structure and show that the EF hand motif forms a standard calcium-binding pocket. The affinity of this pocket for calcium has been measured and mutants that both decrease and increase its affinity for the metal ion have been created
Increasing On-Task Behavior Using Teacher Attention Delivered on a Fixed-Time Schedule
The effectiveness of fixed-time delivery of attention to increase the on-task behavior of 2 students in general education was examined. The teacher in this study provided attention to students on a 5-min fixed-time schedule and responded to students in her typical manner between cued intervals. An ABAB withdrawal design was used to test the effects of the intervention. The results of this study indicate that a fixed-time schedule of attention was effective in increasing students’ on-task behavior and decreasing their off-task behavior. Implications of the study for research and practice are discussed
Large Angular Scale CMB Anisotropy Induced by Cosmic Strings
We simulate the anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) induced
by cosmic strings. By numerically evolving a network of cosmic strings we
generate full-sky CMB temperature anisotropy maps. Based on maps, we
compute the anisotropy power spectrum for multipole moments . By
comparing with the observed temperature anisotropy, we set the normalization
for the cosmic string mass-per-unit-length , obtaining , which is consistent with all other
observational constraints on cosmic strings. We demonstrate that the anisotropy
pattern is consistent with a Gaussian random field on large angular scales.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, two postscript files, also available at
