    The Causes and Consequences of Venture Capital Financing. An Analysis based on a Sample of Italian Firms

    The analysis of the determinants and the effects on firm performance of venture capital finance for a sample of Italian enterprises indicates that small, young and more innovative firms are more likely to be financed by a venture capitalist. Our results confirm that venture capital can help reduce financial constraints for firms that are more difficult for external investors to evaluate. We also show that larger firms resort to venture capitalists when their indebtedness with banks is high and we find evidence that venture capital financing is more frequent after periods of high growth and investment, a result that points to the advisory role of the venture capitalist. A novel result emerges; venture capital also finances firms with multiple banking relationships. In the presence of multiple lending, banks could have greater difficulty monitoring firms with asymmetric information; moreover, if firms default, banks are likely to have a weaker bargaining position. In these cases, the amount of bank credit is probably near its limit and firms need to resort to venture capital, a contract that reduces the amount of guarantees needed to access external finance.Venture capital, Private equity

    Cyanine Renaissance: Tailoring the Properties to Applications

    In this account, we provide an overview of the applications that arose from the recently developed synthetic methodology that delivers heptamethine cyanines (Cy7) substituted at the central chain. The ability to easily introduce and manipulate various substituents in different substitution patterns along the cyanine chain enabled rational tailoring of the photophysical and photochemical properties. Exercising this control over the structure–property relationship proved to have a substantial impact in the field of cyanine dyes and was swiftly harnessed in a number of emerging applications in distinct areas, including fluorescent probes, biosensors, dye-sensitized upconversion nanoparticles, phototruncation of cyanines and photocages. While this method unlocked a number of new avenues, many synthetic challenges remain to be conquered in order to fully capitalize on the potential of cyanines, and we provide a short perspective that summarizes them at the end of this manuscript

    Photouncaging of Carboxylic Acids from Cyanine Dyes with Near-Infrared Light

    Near-infrared light (NIR; 650–900 nm) as biocompatible stimulus offers unparalleled advantages in terms of availability, high precision in time and space and deep tissue penetration. The development of photocages that operate in this region represents a fundamental challenge due to low energy of the excitation light. Herein, we repurpose cyanine dyes into photocages that are available on a multigram scale in three steps and efficiently release carboxylic acids in aqueous media upon irradiation with NIR light up to 820 nm. The photouncaging process is examined using several independent techniques and we provide compulsive evidence that it proceeds via photooxidative pathway. In vitro biocompatibility of the photocages and their photoproducts is also demonstrated. In combination with modularity of the cyanine scaffold, the realization of these accessible photocages will aid fully unleashing the potential of the emerging field of NIR-photoactivation and facilitate its widespread adoption outside the photochemistry community

    Short Supply Chain of Waste Flows: Designing Local Networks for Landscape Regeneration

    Creating a circular economy poses multiple challenges yet has social opportunity. It represents a key approach to implement the management of more sustainable waste flows to achieve win-win solutions consistent with the EU environment goals, and with the social-economic expectations. As part of the comprehensive outcomes of the EU funded research project REPAIR, the paper presents the results for new technological soils, designed with the aim of implementing the number of products coming from the recycling of both C&D waste and organic waste. The paper discusses the technical issues of this solution in the framework of the specific characteristic of its supply chain. The research aim is focused on the design approach, working on the new products and process at once. Further, the project highlights the importance of dedicated local networks for sharing knowledge in between different stakeholders and experts, and for promoting innovation at local scales

    Is the chemotherapy era in advanced non-small cell lung cancer really over? Maybe not yet

    Lung cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed tumors in both the male and female population. In Italy it is the leading cause of cancer deaths in men and the third in women. Although the 5-year survival rate has moderately increased in the last years, the diagnosis remains associated with a very poor prognosis. However, in the last decade significant progress has been made, also in the treatment of advanced-stage non-small cell lung cancer. The advent of targeted therapies and the recent explosion of immunotherapy seem to have limited the role of chemotherapy. But is this completely true? The aim of this editorial is to discuss some of the most controversial aspects of the therapeutic scenario in non-small cell lung cancer, with particular attention to the role that chemotherapy still play

    Genetic divergence in the cave cricket Troglophilus neglectus (Orthoptera Rhaphidophoridae): mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data.

    In this study we used sequence polymorphisms at one mitochondrial and one nuclear gene (Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I and Internal Transcribed Spacer 1, respectively) to assess the degree of genetic divergence among 21 populations of the cave cricket Troglophilus neglectus (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae), a species whose currently known range extends from the Balkan Peninsula to Southern Bavaria. Nineteen populations were sampled in Northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, while two populations came from Germany (Lower Saxony) and Czech Republic, thus well outside the species range. Molecular data revealed a high level of fragmentation, with most of the study populations bearing exclusive haplotypes, the sole exception being the German and Czech specimens, which carried haplotypes also occurring at Slovenian locations. Spatial distribution of genetic heterogeneity and pattern of genetic divergence argue in favor of a recent origin of the two Central European populations, possibly through man-mediated dispersal event(s). These populations being not considered, our data are in remarkable agreement with a previous study based on allozymes conducted on a subset of populations of the same species and, more generally, with what is known on the population genetics of peri-Mediterranean Rhaphidophorids

    ZenHackAdemy: Ethical Hacking @ DIBRIS

    Cybersecurity attacks are on the rise, and the current response is not effective enough. The need for a competent workforce, able to face attackers, is increasing. At the moment, the gap between academia and real-world skills is huge and academia cannot provide students with skills that match those of an attacker. To pass on these skills, teachers have to train students in scenarios as close as possible to real-world ones. Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions are a great tool to achieve this goal, since they encourage students to think as an attacker does, thus creating more awareness on the modalities and consequences of an attack. We describe our experience in running an educational activity on ethical hacking, which we proposed to computer science and computer engineering students. We organized seminars, outside formal classes, and provided online support on the hands-on part of the training. We delivered different types of exercises and held a final CTF competition. These activities resulted in growing a community of students and researchers interested in cybersecurity, and some of them have formed ZenHack, an official CTF team
