The present work studies the quasi one-dimensional -based
compounds within a correlated model. More specifically, we focus our attention
on the composed influence of the electronic dimerization-factor and the
repulsion, on the transport properties and the localization of the electronic
density in the ground-state. Those properties are studied through the
computation of the charge gaps (difference between the ionization potential and
the electro-affinity: IP-EA) and the long- and short-bond orders of an infinite
quarter-filled chain within a model. The comparison between the

An Interprofessional Consensus of Core Competencies for Prelicensure Education in Pain Management: Curriculum Application for Physical Therapy
Core competencies in pain management for prelicensure health professional education were recently established. These competencies represent the expectation of minimal capabilities for graduating health care students for pain management and include 4 domains: multidimensional nature of pain, pain assessment and measurement, management of pain, and context of pain (Appendix 1). The purpose of this article is to advocate for and identify how core competencies for pain can be applied to the professional (entry-level) physical therapist curriculum. By ensuring that core competencies in pain management are embedded within the foundation of physical therapist education, physical therapists will have the core knowledge necessary for offering best care for patients, and the profession of physical therapy will continue to stand with all health professions engaged in comprehensive pain management

Installation of insecticide-treated durable wall lining: evaluation of attachment materials and product durability under field conditions.
BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated durable wall lining (DL) is a new method of vector control designed to supplement LLINs and overcome two inherent limitations of LLINs and IRS: nightly behavioural compliance and short residual activity, respectively. DL is a deltamethrin-treated polyethylene material, which when used to cover interior house walls, functions as long-lasting IRS. Because the DL concept anticipates minimal upkeep, a primary challenge is how to guarantee correct household installation and in situ longevity for several years. Field trials were undertaken on various wall surfaces in Ghana to identify a logistically feasible, durable and re-usable method for DL wall attachment and to pilot new methods for assessing DL durability. METHODS: Over fifty-five candidate attachment or fixing products, including mechanical fasteners, material anchors and adhesives, were evaluated for their ability to tolerate static loads (simulating long-term installation) and short-term heavy weights (imitating shock damage). Attachment products were also scored using qualitative logistical and feasibility criteria, including ease of preparation, grip of fixing to DL and possibility of re-use. RESULTS: The stress tests provided a standardised, reproducible and reliable system for assessing fixing effectiveness and DL durability, with 64% (14/22) of adhesives and 15% (2/13) of mechanical fasteners failing to meet the minimum requirements of attaching DL to mud walls for set time periods. For most fixings, less outward load (0.2-8.0 kg) was required to detach DL from the wall, compared to downward load (0.2-19.2 kg). Fixings were better able to grip DL onto concrete than clay surfaces. Using a plastic nail cap to increase DL attachment area greatly improved grip and outward load tolerance, more so than varying nail size, length or texture. CONCLUSIONS: Based on a series of systematic stress tests, optimized fixing products for polyethylene DL wall attachment were identified. In parallel, a detailed and adaptable method of DL household installation was developed for routine deployment in malaria endemic areas. These standardized stress tests will form the basis for comparative evaluations of new types of DL textile, which incorporate non-pyrethroid insecticides to control malaria transmitted by resistant mosquito populations
Rescaling the dynamics of evaporating drops
The dynamics of evaporation of wetting droplets has been investigated
experimentally in an extended range of drop sizes, in order to provide trends
relevant for a theoretical analysis. A model is proposed, which generalises
Tanner's law, allowing us to smooth out the singularities both in dissipation
and in evaporative flux at the moving contact line. A qualitative agreement is
obtained, which represents a first step towards the solution of a very old,
complex problem
Acoustic behavior of melon-headed whales varies on a diel cycle.
Many terrestrial and marine species have a diel activity pattern, and their acoustic signaling follows their current behavioral state. Whistles and echolocation clicks on long-term recordings produced by melon-headed whales (Peponocephala electra) at Palmyra Atoll indicated that these signals were used selectively during different phases of the day, strengthening the idea of nighttime foraging and daytime resting with afternoon socializing for this species. Spectral features of their echolocation clicks changed from day to night, shifting the median center frequency up. Additionally, click received levels increased with increasing ambient noise during both day and night. Ambient noise over a wide frequency band was on average higher at night. The diel adjustment of click features might be a reaction to acoustic masking caused by these nighttime sounds. Similar adaptations have been documented for numerous taxa in response to noise. Or it could be, unrelated, an increase in biosonar source levels and with it a shift in center frequency to enhance detection distances during foraging at night. Call modifications in intensity, directionality, frequency, and duration according to echolocation task are well established for bats. This finding indicates that melon-headed whales have flexibility in their acoustic behavior, and they collectively and repeatedly adapt their signals from day- to nighttime circumstances
Mice Infected with Low-virulence Strains of Toxoplasma gondii Lose their Innate Aversion to Cat Urine, Even after Extensive Parasite Clearance
Toxoplasma gondii chronic infection in rodent secondary hosts has been
reported to lead to a loss of innate, hard-wired fear toward cats, its primary
host. However the generality of this response across T. gondii strains and the
underlying mechanism for this pathogen mediated behavioral change remain
unknown. To begin exploring these questions, we evaluated the effects of
infection with two previously uninvestigated isolates from the three major
North American clonal lineages of T. gondii, Type III and an attenuated strain
of Type I. Using an hour-long open field activity assay optimized for this
purpose, we measured mouse aversion toward predator and non-predator urines. We
show that loss of innate aversion of cat urine is a general trait caused by
infection with any of the three major clonal lineages of parasite.
Surprisingly, we found that infection with the attenuated Type I parasite
results in sustained loss of aversion at times post infection when neither
parasite nor ongoing brain inflammation were detectable. This suggests that T.
gondii-mediated interruption of mouse innate aversion toward cat urine may
occur during early acute infection in a permanent manner, not requiring
persistence of parasitecysts or continuing brain inflammation.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
