    Transports and Consumers’ Ecological Behaviour

    Get PDF
Transports certainly have positive economic and social effects. However, transports in general, and motor transports in particular play a significant role in environmental pollution, with a negative impact on the quality of life. In this article, we make a diagnosis on the contribution of transports to environmental pollution, especially through CO2 and green house gases emissions, on international and national levels, highlighting trends in transports evolution. Based on an ample research the article presents policies (commandand- control and incentive-based policies, physical, soft or knowledge policies etc.) meant to diminish the negative impact of auto transports on the quality of life. The last part of the article investigates, based on the direct market research, the current and future behaviours of transport services consumers in Bucharest, the way transport services are perceived, as well as the way different modalities of protection against the pollution caused by transport are assessed. Market research has generally revealed a pro-environmental behaviour, most of the subjects investigated agreeing with the measures focused on reducing pollution caused by transports. However, the survey results have shown that factors related to the environment and its protection are not very important when deciding to purchase a car.transport services, environmental pollution, consumer behaviour, survey

Using the European Model of Total Quality Management to assess the Performance of Organizations. Case Study on Educational Services

Improving quality represents for all organizations and especially for those in services one of the most important strategies for enhancing performance and competitiveness. In the current social and economic context, the evaluation of the performance of organizations must be approached holistically. Performance means a special result, obtained in a certain field, which expresses the quality of the adjustment of the organization to the conditions in the environment. Currently, it is necessary to rethink the whole approach to the ways of evaluating performance. The continuous quest for meeting and even surpassing clients’ expectations, the involvement of all employees in the organization and the permanent improvement of quality represent important dimensions of Total Quality Management (TQM). As any strategy, TQM comprises a series of activities which lead to meeting all the quality objectives, by optimum use of available resources and of the strengths of the organization. The European model of excellence (the EFQM model established by the European Foundation for Quality Management) provides a set of criteria which can be applied to any enterprise and subsidiary so as to assess performance obtained through TQM. The EFQM model represents a non-prescriptive framework which recognizes the existence of numerous different approaches allowing organizations to obtain sustainable excellence. This framework contains basic concepts specific to The European Quality Award (EQA). Our study presents the use of the European model of TQM as a reference point for management and of the improvement of the quality of services rendered by educational organizations, giving practical applicability and utility to the theoretical concepts presented. It proves that by applying the European model of excellence to assess the performance of educational organizations, a real diagnosis can be performed, which contributes to the elaboration of strategies for improving the quality of training and educational services, adapted to the realities of each school.educational services; improving the quality of services; total quality management; assessing performance; the general strategic chart

Pathological Skin Picking: Case Presentation and Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Pathological skin picking is a condition in which patients induce skin lesions through repetitive, compulsive excoriations of normal skin or skin with minor surface irregularities and they admit their role in the production of the lesions, but are unable to stop their behavior. Psychiatric comorbidities most often associated with skin picking include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, mood disorders, body dysmorphic disorders, trichotillomania and compulsive-buying disorder. We report the case of a 17 year old female patient who addressed the dermatology department of our hospital with an eruption consisting of erythematous papules and plaques. The local examination revealed several clues of paramount importance in drawing the final conclusion and the psychiatric examination helped establish the diagnosis of pathological skin picking in a patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder

NEWS AND INSIGHTS ON THE CONVERGENCE OF IFRS - U.S. GAAP

International accounting convergence is a highly complex process that began decades ago, emphasized globalization being the main factor that determined setters, professional bodies, investors to become aware of the importance of completing this process, namely the development and implementation of a common set of standards covering all areas of financial reporting. This objective was initially assumed by the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC), now the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).In this respect, at first it is noted the convergence of U.S. standards with the international ones, respectively the convergence of U.S. GAAP - IFRS standards, that, at least in theory, are not so different from each other, as we can say that, just as IFRS, U.S. GAAP were designed as a system of principles-based accounting. In reality, the U.S. standards system has proven to be more of a rules-based accounting system, unlike his international equivalent/counterpart. And the current state of convergence of the two sets of rules still reflects significant differences, plus the opposition of some entities to accept international standards

VARIATION OF CHLOROPHYLLS AND OSMOLYTES CONTENT IN THREE CULTIVARS OF WHEAT UNDER DROUGHT STRESS

    Get PDF
Drought is one of the environmental factors that adversely affect the growth and productivity of plants. Plants adapt their metabolism by developing various defensive mechanisms to survive unfavorable conditions. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of water stress (50% field capacity) on photosynthetic pigments, protein, soluble sugars, amino acids and proline content in leaves of three varieties of wheat (Dropia, Alex and Boema). The results show that the contents of soluble sugars, amino acids, total carotenoids and proline increase with decreasing water content in soil while the content in chlorophyll and protein decreases in all studied genotypes. The results suggest that the investigated biochemical indices play an active role in regulating osmotic pressure, an important mechanism in plant tolerance to drought stress

Effects of Brazilian propolis on Leishmania amazonensis

Leishmaniasis, an endemic parasitosis that leads to chronic cutaneous, mucocutaneous or visceral lesions, is part of those diseases, which still requires improved control tools. Propolis has shown activities against different bacteria, fungi, and parasites. In this study we investigated the effect of four ethanolic extracts of typified propolis collected in different Brazilian states, on Leishmania amazonensis performing assays with promastigote forms, extracellular amastigotes, and on infected peritoneal macrophages. Ethanolic extracts of all propolis samples (BRG, BRPG, BRP-1, and BRV) were capable to reduce parasite load as monitored by the percentage of infected macrophages and the number of intracellular parasites. BRV sample called red propolis, collected in the state of Alagoas, and containing high concentration of prenylated and benzophenones compounds, was the most active extract against L. amazonensis. The anti-Leishmania effect of BRV sample was increased in a concentration and time dependent manner. BRV treatment proved to be non-toxic to macrophage cultures. Since BRV extract at the concentration of 25 ”g/ml reduced the parasite load of macrophages while presented no direct toxic to promastigotes and extracellular amastigotes, it was suggested that constituents of propolis intensify the mechanism of macrophage activation leading to killing of L. amazonensis. Our results demonstrate, for the first time, that ethanolic extracts of Brazilian propolis reduce L. amazonensis infection in macrophages, and encourage further studies of this natural compound in animal models of leishmaniasis.21522

Dezvoltarea in ritmuri accelerate a comertului mondial cu servicii, indeosebi dupa anii 70 ai secolului trecut, a determinat sporirea preocuparilor teoreticienilor si practicienilor in marketing de a elabora strategii noi sau de a adapta strategiile existente pentru a amplifica efectele benefice, la nivel economic si social ale tranzactiilor internationale. In ultimele decenii s-au produs mutatii importante in structura schimburilor internationale imateriale, mai ales in sensul sporirii grupei de servicii, in special in domeniul telecomunicatiilor, serviciilor financiare, asigurarilor, serviciilor culturale si consultant.

Mutations in the RB1 Gene in Argentine Retinoblastoma Patients and Uncommon Clinical Presentations

Background: Retinoblastoma, the most common ocular cancer of childhood, is caused by inactivation of the RB1 tumor suppressor gene in the developing retina. It may occur as unilateral, bilateral or rarely as multicentric retinoblastoma, including pineal or suprasellar tumors. Being the retinoblastoma a hereditary cancer, identification of the causative mutation is important for risk prediction in the family members. An early detection of tumor is critical for survival and eye preservation. Screening for RB1 mutations is important for early tumor detection, critical for survival and eye preservation. Purpose: To identify causative RB1 mutations in retinoblastoma patients with different clinical presentations, some of them with a rare multicentric retinoblastoma or with a second non ocular malignancy, as well as the rare association with down syndrome. A comprehensive approach was used to identify the mutations and to detect children with a hereditary condition. Methods: A cohort of 20 patients with unilateral, bilateral and multicentric retinoblastoma was studied. Blood and tumor DNA was analyzed by sequencing, segregation of polymorphisms and MLPA analyses. Some of the rare mutations were validated by cloning or by Real-Time PCR. Results: Six germline and seven somatic mutations were identified; they include nonsense, frameshift, splice mutations and gross rearrangements, four of them novel. Three out of four nonsense/ frameshift germline mutations were associated with severe phenotype: bilateral and multicentric retinoblastomas. The at-riskhaplotype was identified in a familial case including one patient with osteosarcoma; it was useful for detection of mutation carriers. Conclusions: This study allowed us to identify causative RB1 mutations, including several novels. Some patients showed uncommon clinical presentations of retinoblastoma. These data are significant for genetic counseling. Our results support the relevance of carrying out complete genetic screening for RB1 mutations in both constitutional and tumor tissues.Fil: Ottaviani, Daniela. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Get PDF
This paper draws on data from research focusing on assessment methods, its purposes and effects, effectiveness and fairness, as well as student participation and feedback. In total, 124 biology undergraduate students participated in the study. Data were collected through questionnaires and focus groups. Findings reveal written testing as the most used method. Students associate assessment mainly with a summative purpose. Although students report they negotiate some assessment-related aspects with teachers, in general they do not participate in self and peer assessment. Feedback is clearly recognized as an important feature in the assessment process. Implications of the findings are discussed
