Open education is one of the most important settings in every society. It grants everyone the right to learn freely. Today, technology is helping to make learning even more open by providing an environment of online education, which plays a remarkable role in shortening distances and encouraging students to learn. At Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) the new-enrolled students are facing linguistics barriers as well as overcrowding in classrooms, in particular for those in open access institutions. Subsequently, they cannot have an easy access to their face-to-face courses. To help students to overcome these problems, the university has decided to design an online environment for all courses and programmes. The most innovative project adopted at UCA to face massification was inspired from the massive open online courses and was designed as an open Educational platform entitled UC@MOOC. More than 120 scripted courses have been posted online so far. In this paper we will describe and discuss an analytics research on geometrical optics course designed for around 2000 students at UCA. Through out this research we will explain how this initiative has been considered as a source of producing open educational resources

Microcomputer-Based Laboratory Role in Developing Students' Conceptual Understanding in Chemistry: Case of Acid-Base Titration

For the past five years, all Moroccan universities suspended practical work activities in the subject of chemistry for the first year due to a decision made by the Ministry of Higher Education. This study explores the effect of using a Microcomputer-Based Laboratory (MBL) on students' performance and investigates the desirability to convert first-year university-level practicals in chemistry from experimental demonstrations in lectures to the MBL. The study sample comprised 100 students attending the first year at the faculty of sciences of the Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) in Morocco. Students in the experimental group (N = 50) received a 1 h active engagement tutorial on acid-base titration using a microcomputer-based laboratory, in contrast to the control group (N = 50) who received the same instruction with a demonstration of the experiment. The experimental and control groups got randomly selected, and the same instructor trained both groups. The two groups of responders were compared based on their performance in a written exam that assesses the skills of processing, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative and quantitative experimental results of acid-base titration. As a result, the analysis of the obtained results showed that the experimental group performed significantly better in using appropriate mathematical skills for quantitative data analysis; and they were actively engaged in the acid-base titration experiment. The obtained results, together with similar findings from other studies, indicate the positive impact of using MBL on learning outcomes and support the adoption of the proposed learning environment in laboratory educational procedures as an alternative to traditional laboratories. © 2022 American Chemical Society

In this chapter, we present an overview of the state of the art concerning the OER in Morocco, throughout some milestones that we consider to be the most significant. After putting into perspective the political and strategic aspects adopted to lead the Moroccan education system toward a more open pedagogy, we present the main achievements concerning infrastructures and aiming at the generalization of access to resources. We then present some key achievements both at school and university level

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort by most educational institutions (EI) over the world was necessary to ensure the pedagogical continuity during school closures so that schools could fulfill their role. In this chapter, we will describe how EI have switched in record time from traditional teaching using textbooks and face-to-face learning to one-way teaching that in most cases is based on the online screen. We will discuss the situation of distance learning and how stakeholders have prepared to face this pandemic. We will also highlight some challenges of the digital transformation in education during the past decade. An overview of the situation of the disruptive school will be presented, focusing on the main impacts on our society. Then, a brief description of the requirements for remote education in the crisis period will be presented, and adopted solutions will be discussed knowing that most of them were based on the use of online screen solutions. Finally, lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic will help all stakeholders to start thinking and designing the future of education
