    The Plane of the Kuiper Belt

    We present a robust method for measuring the effective plane of the Kuiper belt. The derived plane has an inclination with respect to the ecliptic of 1Âș.86 and an ascending node of 81Âș.6, with a 1 σ error in pole position of the plane of 0Âș.37. The plane of the Kuiper belt is inconsistent with the invariable plane, the plane of Jupiter, and the plane of Neptune at the greater than 3 σ level. Using linear secular perturbation theory, we show that the plane of the Kuiper belt is expected to oscillate about the position of the invariable plane with a period of 1.9 million years and an amplitude of 1Âș.2. The present predicted position of the plane of the Kuiper belt has an inclination with respect to the ecliptic of 1Âș.74 and an ascending node of 86Âș.7, within 0Âș.20 of our measured position

    Advertising to the elite : the role of innovation of fine art in advertising in the development of the advertising industry

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)This study explores the intersection of the developments in the growing advertising, railroad, and automotive sectors of the U.S. economy. It examines the latter two sectors’ advertising to the elite by focusing on how industries that targeted the luxury market used fine art to emphasize and underscore the exceptionalism of that high-end market compared with the mass market. It does so by looking at the transition from using art as a decorative component unrelated to the product to using art specifically designed to advertise a product or experience. In the literature, advertising history has been delineated rather narrowly as the history of advertising to the mass consumer or as the history of advertising a specific type of product. This work broadens the focus in advertising history to show that luxury advertisers, as a sub-category of advertisers, developed particular advertising strategies, which recognized and exploited the relationship between their respective service or product, and a consciously selected audience for their respective advertisements. It shows that high art became a differentiating characteristic of advertising strategies aimed at the social elite market. This work also proposes the need for adding a specific timeline for the development of luxury advertising to the broad, more generally known outline of advertising history

    Scratch and Win! - Immediate Feedback in Physics Multiple-Choice Quizzes and Exams

    Multiple-choice (MC) exams allow a large range of topics to be efficiently tested. However, the effort required to construct a good MC exam—one that tests comprehension and ability to apply knowledge, rather than rote memorization—leads to a reluctance to release solutions, thus limiting the value of the exam to students. Furthermore, students often do not spend the time necessary to review the MC portion of graded exams and may not be aware of their weaknesses with a particular topic in the syllabus. We employed a recent innovation that provides feedback from MC questions, the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IFAT), in a standard first-year Physics course. In this scheme, students respond to MC questions by scratching off a thin, opaque covering from the rectangle corresponding to their answer on a special answer card similar to a “scratch and win” lottery ticket. If their answer is correct, they uncover a star and receive full credit. In the event of a wrong answer they may reconsider their response, and scratch again to earn partial credit. Students thereby receive immediate feedback on their answers, turning the examination itself into a learning experience. It is relatively simple to implement this form of assessment at your institution. The IFAT cards are available for purchase from Epstein Educational Enterprises. However, there are some obstacles. Since machine grading of the IFAT cards is not available, we relied on additional graduate student support for this purpose. We will also discuss the new forms of cheating attempted by students as well as difficulties we encountered constructing our tests with the IFAT system. Based on standardized tests and comparison with a control group, we found that students improved their performance using the IFAT system, with the largest gains seen for conceptually difficult questions. Furthermore, based on an exit survey, students in the study strongly preferred this method of MC testing

    Proposal for a low cost close air support aircraft for the year 2000: The Raptor

    The Raptor is a proposed low cost Close Air Support (CAS) aircraft for the U.S. Military. The Raptor incorporates a 'cranked arrow' wing planform, and uses canards instead of a traditional horizontal tail. The Raptor is designed to be capable of responsive delivery of effective ordnance in close proximity to friendly ground forces during the day, night, and 'under the weather' conditions. Details are presented of the Raptor's mission, configuration, performance, stability and control, ground support, manufacturing, and overall cost to permit engineering evaluation of the proposed design. A description of the design process and analysis methods used is also provided

    Growth of wildtype and mutant E. coli strains in minimal media for optimal production of nucleic acids for preparing labeled nucleotides

    Since RNAs lie at the center of most cellular processes, there is a need for synthesizing large amounts of RNAs made from stable isotope-labeled nucleotides to advance the study of their structure and dynamics by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A particularly effective means of obtaining labeled nucleotides is to harvest these nucleotides from bacteria grown in defined minimal media supplemented with 15NH4Cl and various carbon sources. Given the high cost of carbon precursors required for labeling nucleic acids for NMR studies, it becomes important to evaluate the optimal growth for commonly used strains under standard minimal media conditions. Such information is lacking. In this study, we characterize the growth for Escherichia coli strains K12, K10zwf, and DL323 in three minimal media with isotopic-labeled carbon sources of acetate, glycerol, and glycerol combined with formate. Of the three media, the LeMaster-Richards and the Studier media outperform the commonly used M9 media and both support optimal growth of E. coli for the production of nucleotides. However, the growth of all three E. coli strains in acetate is reduced almost twofold compared to growth in glycerol. Analysis of the metabolic pathway and previous gene array studies help to explain this differential growth in glycerol and acetate. These studies should benefit efforts to make selective 13C-15N isotopic-labeled nucleotides for synthesizing biologically important RNAs
