How we were right and wrong about China? = Miben volt igazunk és miben tévedtünk Kínával kapcsolatban?

It is a pleasure to accept the invitation to contribute an essay to this Festschrift, celebrating Prof. Mihaly Simai’s 90th birthday. For many decades, Simai has been one of Hungary’s most productive and respected economists. His influence has spread much beyond our small country’s borders, given the many prominent positions he held at the United Nations and at other international organizations, and that so many of his publications are in English. Prof. Simai’s research productivity is amazing. He is the author (mostly) or the co-author of nearly 300 scholarly publications, 40 of them books; the rest: articles, chapters, and special studies.2 We met and interacted regularly during the 1980s at the annual meetings of the HungarianAmerican Economic Roundtable (held, alternatingly, in the US and in Hungary). During the last 30 years we met occasionally, somewhere around the world; for the past decade, in Budapest, where we both live. Talking to him has always yielded insights about analysing and interpreting contemporary global issues. East-West Commercial Relations and Prospects for Eastern Europe and Yugoslavia The main purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the current economic situation and prospects of Eastern Europe and Yugoslavia, focusing on the region's trade and financial relations with the Western countries. A secondary purpose is to comment the question : how successful were the experts in foreseeing such dramatic developments as the huge rise in Eastern Europe's foreign debt, rescheduling by some countries and the economic crises that have taken place in some countries in the early 1980s ? A perusal of the Joint Economic Committee volumes on Eastern Europe published in 1974 and 1977 and some other contemporary works suggests our record of forecasting is not a very good one.L'intention ici est de tracer un tableau d'ensemble de la situation économique actuelle et des perspectives de l'Europe de l'Est et de la Yougoslavie, en centrant l'analyse sur les relations financières et commerciales de la zone avec les pays occidentaux. On se demande également dans quelle mesure les spécialistes avaient prévu des phénomènes aussi graves que l'énorme augmentation de l'endettement extérieur de l'Europe de l'Est, le rééchelonnement de la dette de certains pays et les crises économiques qui ont éclaté dans plusieurs pays au début des années quatre-vingts. Il suffit de lire attentivement les études publiées par le Joint Economie Committee en 1974 et 1977 et d'autres travaux récents pour constater que les prévisions des économistes ont manqué d'acuité.Marer Paul.
