    Aneurysms of the intracranial segment of the ophthalmic artery trunk. case report and systematic literature review

    Aneurysms arising from the ophthalmic artery trunk (OAT) are very rare, particularly in the artery's intracranial course. The onset of a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) from a ruptured OAT aneurysm in this segment is extremely rare. We present a case and discuss the anatomy, clinical significance, and therapeutic options for an aneurysm at this site. We also retrospectively analyzed the record of a patient with a ruptured aneurysm of the intracranial segment of the OAT and conducted a comprehensive and systematic review of the PubMed and Scopus databases for literature on this pathology. Only one case report of SAH from an aneurysm of the intracranial segment of the OAT was published in the literature. Only in our case was the intracranial OAT segment aneurysm discovered in the acute phase of SAH. Conventional angiography with three-dimensional acquisition may help detect aneurysms at this level. Detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the OAT is of paramount importance for both surgical and endovascular approaches. Surgical treatment is complex because of difficulties in accessing the orbital region and the risk of optic nerve and vascular injuries. Endovascular treatment, when feasible, could be a good alternative to reduce the risk of loss of vision related to surgical manipulation

    Management of patients with Graves' disease and orbital involvement: role of spectral domain optical coherence tomography

    PURPOSE: To investigate the role of choroidal thickness evaluation with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) and enhanced depth imaging (EDI) technique in the management of patients with Graves' disease and orbitopathy (GO). METHODS: Thirty-six eyes of 18 patients with GO and 36 eyes of 18 age-matched control subjects were included in this retrospective observational study. All the subjects underwent a complete ophthalmological evaluation, including clinical activity score (CAS) and exophthalmometry. The SDOCT images of the choroid were obtained by EDI modality. RESULTS: Choroidal thickness was significantly increased in GO than in control eyes (p < 0.01). A significant correlation was found between choroidal thickness and CAS, proptosis, and the duration of disease (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study shows that choroidal thickness, evaluated with EDI-OCT, is significantly increased in patients with GO and correlates with the activity of the disease, proptosis, and duration of the disease. The choroidal thickening may reflect the ocular hemodynamic changes, and enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography may be a useful tool for the evaluation of orbital congestion and management of patients with Graves' disease and orbital involvement

    Lidar observations of the Planetary Boundary Layer above the city of Thessaloniki, Greece

    Aerosol measurements have been performed in Greece since 1994, using a backscattering lidar system. The main scientific objective has been to evaluate the vertical structure of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) in urban sites of Greece, using suspended aerosols as tracers of the atmospheric motion. The observations presented here were performed in early 1996, over the city of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece, close to the sea shore. The lidar system was operated under varying air pollution and meteorological conditions. The vertical profiles of the aerosol extinction and backscattering coefficients were retrieved from the lidar signal, using the Fernald-Klett inversion algorithm. Comparison between standard meteorological data from radiosondes and ground stations proves that lidar aerosol profiles can be successfully used to monitor the time variation in the layering of the lower troposphere

    Sex and gender optometry: from retinal design to stereopsis

    Scientific research in optometry aims to increase the ability to predict optical effects induced by lens fitting, allowing us to understand how geometrical concepts and physical phenomena translate into perceptual responses. It is possible, for instance, to investigate how differential perspective affects three-dimensional perception, indeed the ocular parallax error, that occurs as the eyes are separated horizontally by a certain distance (DAV), allows for the depth interval between two object points to be appreciated and transferred to the retina. In a study conducted at the University of Turin, the DAVs measured on a group of students were compared with the students’ stereo acuity values, with the aim of highlighting whether female subjects, whose DAVs are smaller than those of men, actually have less sense of depth. The measurement protocol and the results obtained will be explained. The research perspective is the parameterization of optometric tests to take into account differences due to gender, in order to detect any abnormalities more accurately

    An integer programming approach for the 2-class single-group classification problem

    Two sets XB, XR ⊆ Rd are linearly separable if their convex hulls are disjoint, implying that a hyperplane separating XB from XR exists. Such a hyperplane provides a method for classifying new points, according to the side of the hyperplane in which the new points lie. In this work we consider a particular case of the 2-class classification problem, which asks to select the maximum number of points from XB and XR in such a way that the selected points are linearly separable.     SPAD-502 readings in response to photon fluence in leaves with different chlorophyll content

    The chlorophyll meter (SPAD-502) is widely used to estimate chlorophyll content, but non-uniform chloroplast distribution can affect its accuracy. This study aimed to assess the effect of photon fluence (F, irradiance x time of illumination) in leaves with different chlorophyll content and determine the effect of chlorophyll a/b on SPAD values of four tropical tree species (Croton draconoides Müll. Arg., Hevea guianensis Aubl., Hymenaea courbaril L. and Matisia cordata H.B.K.). There were also determined calibration equations for the chlorophyll meter and assessed the effect of F on SPAD values between 07:00 h and 17:00 h. Calibration equations were obtained after determining leaf chlorophyll content in the laboratory. Increases in F with time caused a reduction in SPAD values in species with a high chlorophyll content, with reductions of 20% in M. cordata and 10% in H. guianensis. Leaves of C. draconoides and H. courbaril had lower chlorophyll content and showed no changes in SPAD values with increase in F. The chlorophyll a/b ratio increased with SPAD values and the SPAD/chlorophyll relationship was best described by an exponential equation. It seems that F may affect SPAD values in leaves with high chlorophyll content, probably due to non-uniform chloroplast distribution at high irradiance. This indicates that SPAD values tend to be more accurate if recorded early in morning when irradiance is low

    Macular Choroidal Thickness: Evaluation of Variability among Measurements and Assessment of Predictive Value of Glaucomatous Visual Field Damag

    Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the choroidal circulation and glaucoma, assessing macular choroidal thickness (MCT) as a predictive value of glaucomatous visual field damage. Methods: Twenty primary open-angle glaucoma patients were recruited. Patients underwent 2 SS-OCT scans: one with DRI OCT (Topcon) and the other with PLEX Elite 9000 (Zeiss). Standard OCT parameters were acquired by DRI OCT, while MCT was manually measured in 5 points on Plex ELITE 9000 images. The relationship among MCT, standard OCT parameters, and visual field indices was evaluated. Pearson''s r correlation was calculated to evaluate these relationships. Reproducibility of measurements was analyzed. Results: MCT measurements showed a good intra- and interobserver repeatability. A negative correlation appeared between MCT and BMI (r = -0.518, p = 0.023). Mean deviation showed a statistically significant correlation with MCT measured at subfoveal and at 1, 000 µm nasally (r = 0.50, p = 0.03, and r = 0.52, p = 0.023). A correlation was found between the 2 MCT (Zeiss vs. Topcon) measurements and between MCT and peripapillary choroidal thickness (r = 0.944 and r = 0.740, p < 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: A good intra- and interobserver reproducibility was found. MCT showed a weak predictive value of glaucomatous visual field damage. A significant correlation was found between MCT and BMI. © 202
